Digital Chart of the World point data

Recommended Posts

Guest R5D4

Hi Scenery Designers,Forgive my intrusion into an "expert" board, but I came across the following link the other day.http://www.maproom.psu.edu/dcw/Where you can extract road/rail point information for many countries in the world. Does anyone have any views on this data? Is it accurate enough?I would quite like to build a rail network for FS2002

Hi R5D4.That data should be the identical source for the data used for roads and water masking in FS2002. Since there are no raillines for FS2002 it should work fine.Dick

How may I use the data previded by this website? ASD uses the mapgen data, so ... how may I convert Arcinfo data to mapgen data?It would be very easy to realize railroads using these data, converting them to files readable by ASD or Airport and then convert them with SCM2VMP.Regards

You can save yourself the hassle (mostly). The DCW data is the dataset M$ used. I dowloaded it for New Zealand, only to find that the only difference was more road data and raillines (coast, rivers, lakes were 100% identical). It's fairly unaccurate, a maximum error of 2km which is very noticable. The datasets also come from different sources, for example in NZ quite a few roads are in the water because the coast and the roads don't match. It's the only free dataset I know of, but it surely isn't very accurate...Plus, you will need a geoprocessing program to use this data somehow...Cheers, Christian

Hi R5D4.Christian is absolutely right about the accuracy of the rail lines. It's a judgement call. If you like the looks of a world with raillines, and don't care about the accuracy factor, go for it. It's not going to be any worse than the default roads, or lakes, or streams, or mesh.Dick
