Finally some very cool trees...

Hi guys!I've completed my trees for my upcoming scenery and i'm really excited about the way they have turned out! (NO FRAME HIT SO FAR)BUT...The in the third picture you will notice, i'm having trouble with disappearing textures. I do have the textures set to double sided in GMAX and i'm using a DXT1 Bitmap for the texture. Any ideas of what I can do to get the backface of the polygons to show up? I also want your opinions on the shadows. Should I keep them or get rid of them?-BTW I'm using "PLANES" in Gmax for the branches...Any help would be appreciated!David

Looking good,My personal advice is that you remove the shadows, as the rest of the trees in the FS-world (autogen) doesn't use any. But that depends if your trees stand close to autogen trees or not.

I think the shade looks nice. In real life trees also give shadows, so I would keep them. I think it is more a problem that in the 3rd picture the tree looks a bit like someone took half of the leaves from it. Looks to empty in my opinion.I assume that is due to the double sided problem you write about. If you have set the material to double sided (ds_) then it should work fine, so I have no clue what is wrong.Arno

Finally, someone is trying this! Great job, David!I think the trees look really good. I've been waiting for someone to come up with some higher poly trees. They should look really good when you fly over them. Do you use LOD models though to make them more framerate friendly (this way you could add a lot of trees into one scene)?About the shadows I'm undecided. Maybe also try a low detail LOD model as a shadow model?Cheers, Christian

Hi Christian! You can download my scenery from AVSIM.COM... Search for Shearwater.I put clusters of 14 trees per area into this scenery without any really noticable frame hit on a 1.53GHZ AMD. To enable the trees in the scenery You need to set it to dense. I haven't tried a lower LOD model yet, but I will when I get into adding some updates to my scenery!David
