How to convert E00 files?

Recommended Posts

Hi Francesco.2 or 3 designers have worked with georeferenced files to automatically convert them to roads. The programs they used were MapInfo and ArcGis... both very expensive programs, and we don't have the programming scripts they used to create the BGLC code from those programs. However, there may be a cheaper work around:Abacus' old ASD allowed the importation of maps... so if you have ASD, you may be able to convert the data to a form ASD will recognise, and then make SCASM roads... then use Falko Dienstbach's SCM2VTP to make VTP lines from the SCASM code. Also:You may be able to change the E00 to shapefiles ( .SHP ), and then import them into Terrascene ( a FLY!2 program ). The TARGA raster image can then be imported into Chris Wright's next version of his AutoASM program... he's adding VTP to that program. AutoASM should be able to translate an appropriate image into the BGLC code. Chris was also experimenting with lists of Lat-Long points in a file to produce code, but I don't know how far he got with that.Does this seem complicated? It is. We very much need a program that will take a standardised georeferenced file, like E00 or SHP, and convert the polys and lines to FS2002 BGLC code. You may end up simply looking at the code in ArcExlorer, or some other free viewer, and writing down Lat-Long points for the lines. Then you can try to use TDFCalc2, from my cellgrid2 program, to convert the points to VTP points and cells....It should be very possible to process a text list of Lat-Long points into code.... perhaps a comma-separated file.... maybe that's my next project. :)Dick

Thanks a lot Dick, for your explanation!I've ASD, and will try to use it with E00 files (if on some way it is possible that ASD read and convert these files...).Have a good week end.

I am also trying to do this. However, the format supported by ASD is DLG while these files are E00 format. So first thing is to find E00 -> DLG converter. Only program so far which can do this is Grass (freeware), however I cannot run it since it's Win2000/NT/XP application and I'm using Win98SE. I don't know about commercial packages like ArcInfo from ESRI.

First at all: thanks Falko for the program, it will improve our sceneries with new roads and railways!I've downloaded the e00 files for Italy from this page:http://data.geocomm.com/catalog/IT/group103.htmlbut when try to convert the data with your program, witchewer number is inserted, it appears this message:0 block found.May you help me to understand where i'm wrong?Ciao

Falko, Your program is very interesting and it will most probably solve my problems as well. However, I'm having some difficulties when trying to import rrline.e00 data into it.First I assume that SCASM-file the converter requires is actually the E00 file to be converted, right? As far as datablock parameters are concerned, where I can find the correct values? In my example I used 1 and 2 and then 0=end. However, this caused error message:Funktionsaufruf unzul

The reason may be that there are some strange invisible characters in the first line of the E00-file witch causes the error. This problem can be solved by deleting the invisible end of the first line or the whole line. The first line needed by the program is the line that contains an "ARC"-comment. This is the start of the data-blocks.Ahead of the lines with the block-nubers there should be 5 or more spaces. The block-numbers starts with number 1. If you give 0 at the beginning, the program does not find any blocks at all. At the moment the program can only read in 100 blocks of line-data. For Italy I found about 3400 data-blocks in the road-file, so you have to create 34 files for the roads of Italy. The E00-file should look like this:EXP 0 /AFS/PSU.EDU/LIBRARY/DCW/FTP/DCW_DATA/27690/RDLINE.E00 ARC 2 1 6854 1 4 89 89 15 1.2212403E+01 4.7088322E+01 1.2205673E+01 4.7086460E+01 1.2193816E+01 4.7078815E+01 1.2171275E+01 4.7071278E+01 1.2148713E+01 4.7065697E+01 1.2146432E+01 4.7065132E+01 1.2131230E+01 4.7056599E+01 1.2105991E+01 4.7046791E+01 1.2064528E+01 4.7025932E+01 1.2055198E+01 4.7026707E+01 1.2036105E+01 4.7022995E+01 1.1990437E+01 4.7007179E+01 1.1989742E+01 4.7006992E+01 1.1955242E+01 4.6997654E+01 1.1944989E+01 4.6991188E+01 2 6834 3 5 89 89 9 1.1490021E+01 4.7014194E+01 1.1489973E+01 4.7010445E+01 1.1492589E+01 4.6999760E+01 1.1476715E+01 4.6976749E+01 1.1459600E+01 4.6963570E+01 1.1453530E+01 4.6954914E+01 1.1432048E+01 4.6938782E+01 1.1435019E+01 4.6931908E+01 1.1425855E+01 4.6920025E+01...hope this helpsFalko
