Scenery designers: allrounders (?)

Recommended Posts

Hi,Just some ligher discussion here in between the raw code, brain-wrinkling topics were used to here. :)I came to think of that scenery designers in many cases do all lot of job by themselves, work that vary a lot from task to task. It's not common to have several designers in a team, among which the different kind of tasks are divided, one take care of the painting part, another of the coding etc. etc. Yes, there are examples of this existing as well, but mostly a scenery designer is a lonely wolf tinkering with his own little scenery all by himself. Why not compare a scenery designer to an aircraft designer (FS). Aircraft design teams often split up their work between people who are specialized for certain tasks. One is a 3d-modeler, another one an airfile expert, and perhaps a third one makes the textures. Scenery designers often do all their stuff themselves, ground making, 3d-modeling, raw coding, texture painting etc. And all these tasks vary quite a lot from each other, just like airfile making varies from 3d-modeling of an aircraft. That's about it. Do you experience it the same way? :) What's your opinions? Drop a line or two...

Yes you are right... My experience comes from Aircraft Painting, so the part that I enjoy more is seeing those rather boring looking 3d models come to life when the textures that trick the eye to give any special feeling like movement 3d detail, use, are applied. When I started with this I did not know too much about 3d modeling, and I still don't know too much about Scasm coding for example, so this part is the harder for me and takes a lot of time for me to learn, given the fact that I don't have programming experience...I think that most freeware designers, aircraft and Scenery are alone, not sure about Payware teams, but I doubt that such a complex task can be assumed only by one soul...

I have the problem that I'm quite experienced SCASM programmer (I've even discovered how to animate within the old-style dynamic scenery), but I'm not good at creating textures. I would really need a PS specialist, but nobody is intresed in a freeware project. And that s**ks!

Yes, I think you are right. But the nice thing of doing it all yourself is that you get a lot of variation in your "work". This makes it even more fun to do.I am a member of a scenery team (Netherlands 2000), but inside that team we have divided the work in airports etc (every designer does some airports or cities). That means that every designer still needs to do all the parts from modeling to texturing (of course we help each other when needed as well). So to conclude, I think it is better to do everything myself. It gives me more variation and more fun. If I don't feel like playing with some SCASM code today, I'll make a texture or a 3D model in GMax :).

If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can't be done.
