Good idea

Guest DooRoo

Hi guys,I just had a brainfart, and i wanna run the idea by you ?Since opensource software is the best thing since sliced bread, why not create an opensource scenery design project to model the entire world ?Looking forward to your responses ...DooRoohttp://www.aircraft.co.zahttp://www.eyetea.co.za

Sounds like a nice idea, but I think the entire world is a bit too big :). I think such a project would be just too big to organize etc (and don't even think about the size of download it would give).

If the world should blow itself up, the last audible voice would be that of an expert saying it can't be done.

Download size isn't such a big issue, as you can separate the areas, eg. only South Africa, or the UK.The same goes for the organizing of the project. You have a team leader for each section. As for hosting it, I have thought of a few ideas that could work ...DooRoohttp://www.aircraft.co.zahttp://www.eyetea.co.za

Sounds about like what's already happening...People work on the area they want to, which turns out to be lots of places all around the world. No one has ever had the time to complete a continent before the next version of the sim is released, and we then have to go back and redo our work, at least to some degree. What is it about your idea that is different?

Well, at the moment I hate downloading hundreds of different scenery packages to make my flightsimming as real as possible ... with this method, everyone contributes to one project ... so if you usually fly a lot in one place eg. Alaska, you only download one project, which contains all the necessary files for the whole country ...DooRoohttp://www.aircraft.co.zahttp://www.eyetea.co.za

In principle it's a good idea. The reality however, is that you would have to involve a considerable number of people, investing tens of thousands of hours, creating hundreds of gigabytes of information, in dozens of different countries, spending thousands of dollars of their own money. ( A lot of the required information is not available for free ). The task is daunting. However, like Bob I do wish you the best.Regards,Chris Wilkes

>Since opensource software is the best thing since sliced>bread, why not create an opensource scenery design project to>model the entire world ?It's not a bad idea - it already exists. Why stop at scenery when you can make the entire game engine and aircraft open source too? Check out http://www.flightgear.org/From the website:"The FlightGear flight simulator project is an open-source, multi-platform, cooperative flight simulator development project. Source code for the entire project is available and licensed under the GNU General Public License."I'm not interested in participating in their project, but I go by once in awhile to see what they are doing. - Martin
