Finding / Editing default BMP and R8 files....

Recommended Posts

Hi - I've just begun looking into editing textures; my goal is to find all the textures that contain roads and remove the roads from them.Normally, it would be easy for me, as I've been using Photoshop for a long time - but I'm finding that many BMPs, when opened in Photoshop, are garbled, and I'm not sure what to do about the R8s.I've downloaded the SDK but cannot find ANY textures that follow their naming convention, nor a reference as to what to do with the files...Any help appreciated. Thanks,Andrew

Hello Andrew,The ground textures that you want are in DXT (Direct-X something or other) format and cannot be read by Photoshop, PaintShop Pro, GIMP, or even Windows Paint. But, you are not stucK - don't despair!Go to Martin Wright's site at http://www.mnwright.btinternet.co.uk/ and get his DXTBmp. Don't forget to also get the essential dlls. This program will let you load the ground textures and then edit them in Photoshop. Very easy to use, like all of Martin's tools. If you have a complete install of Flight Simulator, you should have no trouble finding the ground textures.Best regards.Luis

Hi Andrew, and while you're at Martin's site, also grab his TView utility - it'll allow you to preview all texture files in a folder in thumbview "sheets" of 100 images - very helpful! You'll find this out yourself soon: when editing default ground textures be aware that the edges of each set are identical (to allow for blending) and that those blended sections (determined by the *m11.bmp to *m17.bmp files) are tricky to get right.Good luck! Cheers,Holger
