Canada shape data for use with TerraScene2.1?

Recommended Posts

I've been poking around http://geogratis.cgdi.gc.ca trying to figure out which data series would best work with TerraScene2.1 to generate water/shorelines. Could anyone point me in the right direction, and tell me how to get TS21 to use the data ;)?thanks a ton!sg

Howdy, don't know about those data at geogratis but I've used the high-res CDED1 digital elevation data at geobase.ca to generate shorelines with Jim Keir's Slartibartfast - http://www.jimkeir.co.uk/FlightSim/index.htmlSlarti auto-generates coastlines by tracing 0-m elevations and those Geobase data sets are of perfect quality (as compared to SRTM data) to do this. You can also let Slarti generate elevation-dependent land and water class files, thus you get mesh, shorelines, and land/water class files in one go. The screenshots below are an example of this approach for the B.C. coast.Generating inland water bodies (lakes/rivers) is a bit more tricky and some of the atlas data at Geogratis might be useful for that, though the scale of the data is quite coarse. Instead, I developed a bit more "painful" approach by processing the 1:50k Toporama maps - http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca/ - into Slarti-usable watermask files. The nice thing about the Toporama maps is that all water bodies have a single color and thus it's quite easy - via the magic wand in Photoshop or similar - to select them (well, it does require some manual editing to get rid of grid lines and labels).Let us know if you come up with an easier solution.Cheers, Holgerhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/105485.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/105487.jpg

Those are nice shots, Holger. Thanks for the info. Inland water is, unfortunately, what I'm after - I'm trying to find data that would complete the LOD5 cells along the northern US border, so I don't have to use a patched bgl. Coarse is better than MS's default scenery, so I'll have to look into that.Best,sg

Scott,I have used ERSI data in TS2.1 . It is not as good as the USGS DLG stuff. But it does work. I did not commit the processes "secret" steps to memory since the data was more like a bunch of interconnected straight lines albeit more than the default. If I have time I will try it again to at least note any of the usual pitfalls all proceedures have. Canada may have better data.Dick Boley @KLBE

Thanks, Dick - I've been chatting with Jim Kanold, an author of various Fly and MSFS sceneries of Canada. A man of few words, I think he's gotten me pointed in the right direction. Or maybe the left direction :). I'll be publishing my tell-all after I actually get it to work! In the mean time, any other tips are of course welcome!Best,sg
