Photosources Legality

Recommended Posts

Hi All,I have over the past month or so been compiling a scenery that covers the area shown in the photo below coming from imagery from one of the online mapping sources... My initial intent was to keep it for personal use, however I have since wanted to share it with the rest of the community. So the question now becomes, is it legal to do so? Not sure if this has any bearing on the situation, but if it was to be released it would have been free of charge.Any comments or input would be appreciated!Xavierhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/178089.jpg

Hello Xavier, holy cow, that's a huge area you've got covered there! To answer your question you should read the EULA of the respective image server. For eample, GE has its here: http://earth.google.com/intl/en-US/license.htmlUnfortunately, most of these servers expressly forbid distribution of "derivative work" from the map and image data they offer, regardless of whether you have commercial intentions or not. Cheers, Holger

Get the data from The US government USGS seamless data servers. The US taxpayers paid for it, and any one in the world can use it! (someday maybe the UK Ordnance Survey will get the message).scott s..

Gary,Thanks for the link.I was trying to see what was available for the Philadelphia area for a current project. There are various options but the best ones are 0.15m orthoimagery. The problem with this is that the file size is huge and coverage area of each image is small. Trying to get it all to fit together would be a nightmare. Do you know if 1.0m data is available?ThanksShez
