coastal flattening questions...

Recommended Posts

Guest ELEFANT_0

Well, 1st off, I'de like to say what a great resource this forum is. I'm sure what I'm going to ask is answered somewhere in the preceding 16 pages, but after a few days of reading, I'm stumped. I've built my 1st complete mesh scenery useing SRTM 3 sec. hgts and M. Styles' SRTMtoBGL setup. Chichi Jima in LODs 8-11 just to get a feel for the pros and cons of each. (This is in CFS2 by the way, if that matters). I had coastal shoreline issues and resolved them best I could with airport scenery bgl flattening. It only took 7 multi vertice flattens, but I have been told there is a fr hit to this avenue of coastal fixes. Now, here finally, is my question. From what I have gathered from my searches here, there are many ways to correct the coasts besides bgl flattens.1)color editing the original hight files.2)useing ground2k version 43)coastmaker version 2.* (will this work for cfs2?)4)I'm sure there are more...Which 1 is the best approach? Thanks for help in advance, and if this seems a simpletons question, please bear with me. This is all new to me if not yourself.~S~ ELE outMaybe later...

Hi ELE.There are only 2 ways to flatten mesh in CFS2. Edit the mesh, or use Area16n SCASM flattens ( like the AirportForWindows flattens ).http://www.ptsim.com/en/support.htm contains a link for downloading DEM2BSQ ( http://www.ptsim.com/downloads/DEM2BSQ.ZIP )This file will allow you to translate a dem or HGT file into a bitmap, and edit the mesh in a paint program.========================Steve Greenwood has a utility called FSTFlatten:http://www.fs-traveler.com/resources-g.shtmlIt can make SCASM Area16N flattens at the elevation you specify. You'll need a copy of FSUIPC in your CFS2 modules folder, as it grabs data from the running sim ( you need to slew over the flatten verticies ). =======================To edit the land/water masking, you'll need to use Ground2K version 4. This has an option for making CFS2 BGLs. Ground2K will need a map or screenshot of the area to use as a drawing background. TMFViewer could provide a bitmap for this ( you can also view the mesh ), but be sure you get the lat-long extents. LWMViewer might be an even better tool for making a map image from mesh:http://www.jimkeir.co.uk/FlightSim/LWMViewer.htmlDickPS.Could this forum's access possibly get any S L O W E R ? It's getting ridiculous on weekends.

Thank you Sir, everything I needed to know and more. Very concise answer as always, (I've gotten this far mostly by reading back through the history here). I'm sure I'll have more questions, but this covers what I suspected was true. I'm off to get "wet" lol. ~S~ ELE out
