SRTM data for Australia now available

Recommended Posts

Gooday,Just found that the SRTM data for Australia became available today at ftp://edcsgs9.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/srtm/Australia/ .Although our continent is quite flat, it's still nice to have a good representation of those areas that are not so flat. Anyone know what resolution the data is in FS2004 ? It looks a lot better already as in previous versions.Cheers,Siggy

Hi Siggy,Thanks for the notification. The FS2004 mesh resolutions for SE Australia and Tasmania are LOD10 (38.2m), the rest of Australia is LOD7 (305.8m).You can download a complete list of mesh coverage from my website:www.fs-traveler.com/resources-g.shtmlRegards,Steve

3 arc-second is approximately 90 meters... wider near the equator, narrower near the poles, and of consistant height ( latitudinal measurement ).This is suitable for LOD8, and can be stretched to make a slightly oversampled LOD9.From the documentation:*********************************************************************************The SRTM-1 and SRTM-3 are preliminary data products, contain numerous artifacts, and are not intended for use in navigation or other critical, operations-relatedapplications.*********************************************************************************The SRTM-1 and SRTM-3 data differ from DTED in a number of ways:1. They are unedited, and may contain numerous voids (regions with no data) and other spurious point such as anomalously high ("spike") or low ("well") values.2. Coastlines of water bodies are typically not well delineated and may not appear "flat".3. They have not been evaluated for conformance with National Mapping Accuracy standards.4. SRTM-1 and SRTM-3 differ significantly in data format from the DTED standards.File names refer to the latitude and longitude of the lower left corner ofthe tile - e.g. N37W105 has its lower left corner at 37 degrees northlatitude and 105 degrees west longitude. To be more exact, thesecoordinates refer to the geometric center of the lower left pixel, which inthe case of SRTM-3 data will be about 90 meters in extent. The data is raw and may produce abnormalities in the sim... but it will still look better than the old GOTOPO30 data used for most of the world.Dick

Thanks, Dick. Reading between the lines the documentation explained a lot about the exiting freeware mesh (LOD8) available in New Zealand. I'll try a sample LOD9 area and see what happens.
