Apollo Lunar Rover first screenshots!

Recommended Posts

HI everyone! It's been a long time coming, but the Apollo Lunar Rover is almost ready to roll! We're in the final stages of testing and tweaking, and by the looks of it, Apollo LRV is going to be one sweet ride! And best of all, it will be FREE for TerraBuilder users! More on this to come real soon - but until then, here are a few screenshots!http://www.terrabuilder.com/LRV_AVSIM/LRV_00.JPGhttp://www.terrabuilder.com/LRV_AVSIM/LRV_02.JPGhttp://www.terrabuilder.com/LRV_AVSIM/LRV_03.JPGhttp://www.terrabuilder.com/LRV_AVSIM/LRV_04.JPGhttp://www.terrabuilder.com/LRV_AVSIM/LRV_05.JPGhttp://www.terrabuilder.com/LRV_AVSIM/LRV_06.JPGhttp://www.terrabuilder.com/LRV_AVSIM/LRV_07.JPGhttp://www.terrabuilder.com/LRV_AVSIM/LRV_08.JPGhttp://www.terrabuilder.com/LRV_AVSIM/LRV_09.JPG

Nice surprise! It has been a couple of weeks since I checked for any progress and now "Voila!" Looks really good guys and it will be great to cover the terrain in a more stable fashion. (I am not great at coping with the Moon Hopper!)Looking forward to the release. Well done.CheersMike

Thanks Mike! Not good with the Hopper? Hmmm... :) It is far simpler to fly than a helicopter (no tail rotor torque). Well, practice makes perfect. And wait till you see the new One-man LFV we have in the shop - this one will have no directional stabilization (which means you could fly sideways or backwards). Brings a whole new meaning to the term "Situational Awareness"Misho

OK MishoI get the "could do better" message! Off to practice with the hopper so that I will not freak out too much at the thought of the One-man LFV, which sounds fun. Is this a "back-pack" type of propulsion system? You may have seen that a Kiwi designer here in New Zealand has developed a back-pack vehicle after years of tinkering in his "shed" and it was previewed at Oshkosh recently.Looking forward to more news of yours.CheersMike

LFV is an actual piece of hardware NASA was developing for the Apollo missions, before they were scaled back and eventually cancelled. It was a single-occupant "flying chair" capable of "leaping" up to 8.5 km across the lunar surface:http://www.astronautix.com/craft/lfvrican.htmThis craft was very simple and basic in design, and would have certainly been an incredible experience and a total hoot to fly in! The studies, designs and blueprints of this vehicle are available in the NASA archives. The surprising amount of detail (down to the control panel switches) suggests that NASA was well into the development and was serious about deploying it if Apollo missions continued into the 70's and 80's, as originally intended. We'll re-create this gem as close to the original specs as possible and offer it as a free TerraBuilder:Moon add on. Hopefully, the development cycle will be much shorter than the Rover, as we already have a flight model nailed down.
