AI Traffic at 3-Character Airports Works!

Recommended Posts

Guest

Some folks have expressed difficulty in getting AI traffic to work at "3 character code airports," such as 3HO, 79J, 05C, etc.Well, having spent the best part of four hours this evening, I am happy to report that it does work as expected, but ONLY if the two airports are far enough apart... I don't know how "far," far enough is, but I do know that I now have AI a/c happily shuttling between KORD - 05C, KCGX - 3HO, 3HO - 79J, etc.I do know that it will NOT work between say, 3HO - KVPZ (Hobart-Sky Ranch and Porter Co. Muni. in Indiana)There is no need to create 'dummy' ICAO codes for 3 character airports, as some have suggested! :)I'll keep experimenting until I can discover just how "far", far enough is...

Bill,Thanks for your hard work in experimentation!I've made what I consider a good amount of traffic at a localairport (3CK - Lake In The Hills, IL). Using AFCAD/TTools,I've got a reasonable amount of traffic buzzing around. I'venot shuttled the AC to different airports, just have themtaking-off and landing back at 3CK (attempting to simulatea rough touch n' go event). So, all works just fine when you reference the same 3-codeairport in the flightplans.txt file for a single line. All I needed to do was add 3CK to the airports.txt file sinceit did not exist as a "tower" operated airport.JerryG

I'm still 'fine tuning' a couple of the smaller apts to get some kinks worked out with the taxiways. Since the runways are so narrow, it's difficult to get AI planes to be consistent with lineup on the rwny for TO...At 3HO (Hobart-Sky Ranch) for example, planes are taking off on the right edge of the rwny, and landing on the left edge (sometimes missing the rwny entirely! :)Here is my 'test' flightplan file:AC#17,N93HOA,50%,2Hr,VFR,12:00:00,00:24:51,020,R,0001,3HO,02:00:00,02:16:51,20,F,0002,KORDAC#17,N9KORD,50%,2Hr,VFR,12:00:00,00:24:51,020,R,0001,KORD,02:00:00,02:16:51,20,F,0002,3HOAC#18,N8KMDW,50%,2Hr,VFR,12:00:00,00:24:51,020,R,0001,KMDW,02:00:00,02:16:51,20,F,0002,3HOAC#18,N93HOB,50%,2Hr,VFR,12:00:00,00:24:51,020,R,0001,3HO,02:00:00,02:16:51,20,F,0002,KMDWAC#19,N7KMDW,50%,2Hr,VFR,12:00:00,00:24:51,020,R,0001,KMDW,02:00:00,02:16:51,20,F,0002,05CAC#19,N905CA,50%,2Hr,VFR,12:00:00,00:24:51,020,R,0001,05C,02:00:00,02:16:51,20,F,0002,KMDWAC#20,N93HOB,50%,2Hr,VFR,12:00:00,00:24:51,020,R,0001,3HO,02:00:00,02:16:51,20,F,0002,KCGXAC#20,N9KCGX,50%,2Hr,VFR,12:00:00,00:24:51,020,R,0001,KCGX,02:00:00,02:16:51,20,F,0002,3HOAC#18,N8079J,50%,2Hr,VFR,12:00:00,00:24:51,075,R,0001,79J,02:00:00,02:16:51,20,F,0002,3HOAC#18,N8KVPZ,50%,2Hr,VFR,12:00:00,00:24:51,010,R,0001,KVPZ,02:00:00,02:16:51,20,F,0002,3HOI've made the 'tailnumber' such that it matchs the code of the airport it is flying to, so that I can track them with Nav3.1(beta) to make sure they are actually *going there*... :)Attached is my 05C AFCAD file should you like to take a look at it.

Bill,True - I've experienced the same problem with "narrow" runways.I have the exact same issue at 3CK. For some AC, they turn ontothe grass before the taxiway - eventually staightening out on thetaxiway. Then, as you've seen, the aircraft tend to take-offon one side of the other of the runway (not down the center). It's not too big of an issue, but it is noticeable.Heck - I'm just thrilled that Lee has made AFCAD and TTools soI can fly with GA planes at my local airport!JerryG

Forgive me for jumping into this thread but maybe you smart people can help me. I added a tower at my local 3 character code airport with AFCAD along with some nodes. I added the following to my flights.txt file and compiled it with TTools:AC#18,N30792,30%,1Hr,VFR,01:30:00,02:03:00,015,F,0001,1X4,02:20:15,02:35:15,015,F,0001,1X4AC#18,N30792,30%,1Hr,VFR,01:30:00,02:03:00,015,F,0001,1X4,02:20:15,02:35:15,015,F,0001,1X4My plane, the C-172, appears and just sits there never moving. I am very new at this so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.Bob

Did you just make a mistake when cut-n-pasting to the message, or is is duplicated in the flightplan.txt file?Other than that, I cannot see a problem myself. Did you remember to put start positions at 1X4?

Could it be because I have a node on top of the starting point? I just took it out and will try again.

PROGRESS! Now he taxis out to the end of runway 9 but just sits there. I had forgotten to add the runway into AFCAD assuming that it knew where the runway was. I had also placed a node on top of the starting (parking) node. Any suggestions would be appreciated as to how to get this guy in the 172 to get the nerve to get off the ground. Here is my latest AFCAD configuration.http://www.bbbrown.com/bbbrown/images/jpgs/afcad1x4_02.jpgand here is my flightplan.txt entry:AC#18,N30792,30%,1Hr,VFR,01:30:00,02:03:00,015,F,0001,1X4,02:20:15,02:35:15,015,F,0001,1X4

That is the 'trigger' that will cause the pilot to request takeoff clearance.2) You have no "exit" point for the runway. You need to close the taxi loop to provide a way back to the parking spot(s).3) You need additional nodes on both ends of the runway. What airport is this? I might take a crack at it to see what else is missing...

I 'activated' 3CK to provide additional places for GA a/c to fly to/from. I'm trying to get as many apts working around Chicagoland as possible, so I can divert most of the GA traffic away from KORD and KMDW. :)I am anticipating increasing traffic in/out of KORD and KMDW by a significant amount, but I don't want to do away with GA entirely! :)It's interesting that MS has already done *most* of the work with some of the smaller fields, but just didn't "finish" the job!Did you add a tower freq. or are you keeping it as an uncontrolled airport?

Sounds like you've tried that... :)I have to 'activate' another 10 or so small apts around Chicagoland and will conduct a series of experiments to try to come up with some reasonable 'guesstimate.'This is becoming so much fun, but it takes a lot of time away from actually *flying* the planes! :(

Thanks very much for your help. The airport is 1X4, Willis Gliderport, in Boynton Beach, Fl. I have a custom scenery set I am working on for the airport. Bob
