Voodoo 5 or WinXP Voodoo driver problem

Recommended Posts

Several questions for any 3dfx Voodoo 5 / WinXP users.Recently installed Fly II after using Fly 2k for over a year. Followed the "FIRST TIME FLY!ERS - PLEASE READ", patched to build 210 (I am using the US release of Fly II) without any problems. Started Fly II and in the startup options I selected DX 8, resolution 1024X768, Bit depth 32 bits, Video mem > 32MB. Simulation starts normal with the above selections. However, if I restarted Fly II and selected the "High Detail Textures" on the startup options menu, I get the following error message. "DIRECTX 8 3D DRIVER ERROR - Unable to create software vertex processing device - If you see this message, you need an updated video driver from your video card manufacturer." Is this a limitation of the voodoo card or the WinXP voodoo drivers? If it is a driver issue then where can I find appropriate driver to utilize Fly II's High Detail Textures and am I missing anything by not having this feature checked in the startup menu? Finally, is the 210 patch the only one currently for updating Fly II US version. I realize that "FIRST TIME FLY!ERS - PLEASE READ" posting was updated early this year. Thanks for the help ( Don't beat me up for still using the Voodoo)Terry

Terry,I believe the limitation is the VooDoo card.If you follow the First Time Fly!ers and the FAQ at the top of the forum, you'll note that the current patch is v230. The guides from Ken Salter take you through how to patch to v230, which does require U.S. version users to first be patched thru v210.Warning: follow the instructions and back up the tri*.dll files (video drivers) before you install the 230 build or you'll be in a heap of trouble with your video. This is noted in Step 3 for installing the 230 patch in the First Time Fly!ers post.

Randal,If you have the US release: 1) Download the All Inclusive patch that brings you to build 210: http://ftp.avsim.com/library/sendfile.php?DownloadID=10267 If you have the European release: 1) Download Patch Update 4 to go to build 210: http://ftp.avsim.com/library/sendfile.php?DownloadID=9889 2) Download the 230 patch: http://ftp.avsim.com/library/sendfile.php?DownloadID=12440 3) OPTIONAL: Download the Global update patch to fix some coastline issues: http://ftp.avsim.com/library/sendfile.php?DownloadID=9678Thanks for your reply. Guess I misunderstood Ken Salter's guide for patching to 230. It read as if 230 was the second step for European versions of Fly II but reading it again now makes it clearer. Could you by any chance elaborate on the Voodoo limitation? I'm interested only because I keep reading about the lack of Winxp to fully utilize all the features of the Voodoo 5.Appreciate your help.Terry

I'm no expert on Voodoos, but I believe the problem is two-fold. First, I don't believe XP was designed to exclude any features...I think there was no one home at 3dFx to update the Voodoo drivers for XP and 2000. There may be 3rd party support for this however: http://www.voodoofiles.com/3dfxhelp.aspSecond, the Voodoo is not a true AGP card, even though it plugs into the slot. This means that the AGP aperture support for which Fly!1 and Fly!II were designed can't be accessed, which can hurt high definition performance and create problems for other types of rendering. There are other persons who use or have used the Voodoo card with Fly!II - they know a lot more about it than I. I do know there are serious limitations in Fly! compatibility.
