Runway Textures

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, Does anyone know how the runway textures are created in FLYII and where or how I can search for them in FLYII. I created NEW Runway and Taxiway textures in FLY2k and want to use them in FLYII, however the Taxiway textures are fine and show up in FLYII once placed in the ARTS folder, but the Runway texture does not??? (BOTH files have been converted to Tiff format).Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.Cheers John

I really dont know the answer John but if you go to fly http://www.developers.com and go to the downloads area, Andy did a few textures. If you check what he has done it may give you a clue. All The BestSteve[/div] [align=center]http://mysite.freeserve.com/fly2theuk/aragon.jpg][/divSceneryhttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...y2tms&Go=SearchRepaintshttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...y2Air&Go=SearchOther fileshttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...2Misc&Go=Search

Hi John runway textures like the lighting is hard coded so I am sorrybut I don't think it's possable add new ones but Chris Wallace and I spent time on adding many additional types to the data base so chances are that you can edit the runway database and find what you want. Please post if you need help(Randall and I know our way aroundthat database don't we Randall?) Dan

DanI'm so far behind in my Fly2 learninng curve I'm not sure if what I'm asking is off the wall or not.1: Is it possible to add textures under the airport now (after 240)?2: If so would it be possible to have transparent runways so that the underlying image looks like the runway?ThanksBen

Hi Ben Yup(I think you are talking about addding ground textures right?). As to your 2nd question I do not beleve you can as like I said the runway drawing routines are hard coded calls the the rendering engine. One thing you could do is to look at the values in the runway database for the runway markings and try different ones.Chris Wallace and I worked on adding the U.K's CAA standard for runway markings and Rich added them to one of the builds more than a year ago that may be of some help to you. I do not know what airport you are working on so it's rather hard to be of more help. Dan

Hi, Dan.................good to hear from you. Thanks for the reply........I've located a Runway file that lists the TIFF files involved in creating the runway textures. I'm not sure about this Dan...... but I think the Hard code only apply's to the Runway threshold. Ive just created a quick texture replacement and it replaces ALL of the runway texture apart from the threshold (see PIC). although it appears not to line-up correctly. As regards to the underlying airport textures......I had a similar idea yesterday (see Pic) which I sent over to Aragon (Steve) to have a play with. I hope this is possible because it will enable us to place some reasonable GRASS textures underneath the Taxiways, which I hope will make the Airport environment a little more realistic, specially on approach.Regards John

Hi John what do you want to re-place? the runway markings or the textures if it's the markings then(sorry I thought that's what you were talking about) then no but yes you can get at most of the runwaytextures I am sorry to have miss-led you. Although like I said you can "edit" the markings through the runway database. Yes you can addyour own ground textures to an airport but it will take some work toline everything up. Dan

John,You can place new textures under the airport environs right now using Fly! II v240 patch and TerraModels. Allen added this capability a while back to TerraModels but it wasn't useable until Rich made adjustments which were added to the v240 patch. You can use images of the airport, personal textures, whatever you want.

Hi Dan, BenThe problem I found was that all the spaces between the Taxiways were ALL very different in textures/looks because of the ground textures (specially when the lighting is on) .So I thought if we can underlay the Taxiways with a simple GRASS texture then ALL the spaces between the Taxiways would now be consistant (as real life Airports), I've just created a simple Grass texture for (STEVE - Aragon) to try......Steve if your reading this can you underlay EGCC and post a couple of PICS so me and the guys can see the results.....pretty please...........after All you did beat us at football! Thanks a lotJohn

Hi Flyfishy :-wave Its a little stuttery for me as my graphics card is 16megs, but most airports are on my machine. Are you getting bad frame rates?Sadly this I had to allow up to a point. I wanted to make Manchester have that "BIG" airport feel and use the textures I had to add to it being a bit different. This was my 4th attempt at Manchester and everything I did to it just didnt give it credit. I have left a lot out .... but not too much.<<<<>>>>EGBB Birmingham International with Johns grass texture, hiding what is in between the runway and taxiways.Sceneryhttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...y2tms&Go=SearchRepaintshttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...y2Air&Go=SearchOther fileshttp://ftp.avsim.com/library/search.php?Se...2Misc&Go=Search
