is it possible to export FLY! aircraft for 3D editing?

Hello. I apologize if I'm not posting in the proper place. However, I was hoping I could receive an answer to the question as to whether it is possible to export 3D geometry from FLY! aircraft files so that tweaking can be done with an external 3D editor. I've seen a lot of discussion regarding terrains/buildings and some discussion about creating aircraft for import into the program. However, I'm wondering if it is possible to export any of the geometry from the stock aircraft.ThanksMark Johnson

The 3D model formats used by Fly! II are SMF (Simple Model Format) for static scenery objects and ACM (Articulated Model) for animated objects like aircraft. These are proprietary formats invented by TRI, and are not natively supported by 3D modellers. The SMF and ACM formats at least are well documented, so it shouldn't be too difficult to write an importer for any modeller that supports plug-ins. I have a prototype for TrueSpace 3 if anybody wants to finish it, and it should be quite possible to write similar plug-ins for 3DStudio, maybe Blender too, not sure. There is also an older BIN format from the original Fly! and I think there is a BIN editor out on the web somewhere, search for Monster Truck Madness utilities (another TRI game that used the same BIN format). In order to re-import your modified model back for Fly!, your modeller needs to be able to export an S3D (Simple 3D) file, another TRI proprietary format. There is an "official" exporter for 3DStudio from TRI, and I have a prototype (buggy) exporter for TrueSpace 3.2 as well.Chris WallaceOttawa, Canada
