No FLY! theme - ready for a new experience?

Guest HeliFLYer

Hi all,I know *you are FLY!ers* and most of you know me as an enganged FLY!er too. But let me share this really phantasic Sim experience with you (without throwing stones on me, please! :-) )http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123458.jpgThe HCI Lab of the University of Udinehttp://hcilab.uniud.it/pan/screenshots.htmlhttp://hcilab.uniud.it/pan/index.htmlhttp://hcilab.uniud.it/pan/downloads.htmlhas created a wonderful model of the MB-339 PAN aircraft flown by the Italian Frecce Tricolori Aerobatic Team, powered by flightgear http://www.flightgear.org/the FREE multiplatform flightsimulator. The Beta-testing and technical advice came from the leader of the Frecce Tricolori Aerobatic Team Capt. Massimo Tammaro. If you have a fast internet connection, load the video of the making of the MB 399 PAN - you can see how a prof (Capt. Tammaro) flies the virtual model of his real aircraft. And if you have not only a fast internet connection but also 100 MB free HD space, then get a FREE copy of FlightGear, the MB 339 PAN aircraft and have some fun. If you have some difficulties or questions regarding the setup of your WINDOWS FlightGear version, please feel free to ask me here, the FlightGear People are LINUX like "RTFM" in their answers. This aircraft has a wonderful virtual cockpit with moving parts and you can zoom in and out to optimize your viewangles (this is what FLY! really lacks). This is what you need doing virtual aerobatics! Here are some screenshots:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123456.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123457.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123459.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123460.jpgAt last I hope you are not angry about this post, but as we say here in Germany "other mothers might also have nice daughters" :-)RegardsGeorg HeliFLYer EDDW

Hello Georg,No, I am not going to throw any stones.. ;)I know Flightgear for some time ( also running under Linux) but I do not think it`s very promising. The 3 D effect are funny but far from realistic.Alltough for me FLY!II is a superior sim.to all ohthers.I mustr sa that real realistic 3D cockpits can only be found in that "other" sim. There are models wich are so close to reality , the diffrence with the real thing is almost zero.RegardsLeen

Donny AKA ShalomarFly 2 ROCKS!!!That's what I call taking freeware to the next level! Not just a plane, a sim! I'll have to give it a try, I'm about to get DSL soon. 3D cockpits are nice for flying a visual pattern, but FLY does a pretty good job in the 3/4 views in most planes if head pitch is set to 0. But in most planes the main view has to be panned down before takeoff to facilitate the aproach, then when I reenter in persistent world the main view is right where I want it but every other view is panned down sharply. Yes I have the DVD, which includes seat position fix. I have been using FLYtweaker to set head pitch back to 0, but I am wondering how do I "step back" to use a previous fly.ini.bak file instead of saving a new one just to change head pitch? Best Regards, Donny:-wave

Hi Donny,do I understand you right that you would like to save one/some different fly.ini files and select one as default before running FLY!? (eg. fly.ini.headpitch0 -> fly.ini OR fly.ini.mydefault -> fly.ini)? As I am releasing FLYTweaker 1.8 within the next two weeks, I could implement such a feature for you, if you need it!Please tell me within the next two days.RegardsGeorg HeliFLYer EDDW

Donny AKA ShalomarFly 2 ROCKS!!!Wow, you're quick! To be able to select a FLY.ini default would be helpful, because in the course of using FLY II settings change that you don't necessarily want to change. For instance, pan down your main view and the next time you have to pan up every other view. Also I like to keep my search feature set to "all countries, no states". To me that makes it easier to input a flight route using a paper chart and the nav log. I know I won't be flying from KABE to KMIA via a VOR in Afghanistan, getting multiple hits on a search has never been a problem for me. I hesitate to do a search of an entire state or country because then my default search is in that country or state. There might be a few other cases I can't think of now. In any case, I really apreciate your efforts, and the Tweaker as it is helps a lot.Best Regards, Donny:-wave

Donny AKA ShalomarFly 2 ROCKS!!!We now return this thread to the original subject... Regardless of how good this particular project is at the current time, I am firmly convinced this is the wave of the future. A very large percentage of what makes most comercial sims as good as they are is contributions from freeware developers. I'm definitely giving it a try when I get back online (am public now.) Best Regards, Donny:-wave

Hi Donny, could be my words. Might be a chance for a realistic "FLY! III" if *their* development goes on and *we* would be interested in converting/porting many of these wonderful add-ons for FLY! II to their system?I am just looking at their sim-structure and it is very amazing how similar many structures are to FLY! II. A realistic possibilty would be there, if *we* want it.Anyway, at the present state many things are lacking and sometimes it is difficult to find out how to manage some things - please contact me if you *really* want to try it.RegardsGeorg HeliFLYer EDDW

Donny AKA ShalomarFly 2 ROCKS!!!Definitely. Right now the 'puter I fly on is not on the web, but I'd love to give it a download. Reasons why this project or one like it has a future:Being freeware, it will be perfectly acceptable for anyone to improve any component, of course with due credit to original authors. You don't have to work within a sim's limitations as much if the source code is open.Being a freeware project, it can include language in the EULA or even display during install: Freeware... If you have been sold this or if anyone attempts to sell you an aircraft or component for this please contact... That would aleviate one of the major frustrations for developers, some shmuck selling their stuff on Ebay. All in all, there seems to be more ultimate potential for a freeware sim than a comercial one.Best regards, Donny:-wave
