Terrascene - airports

Recommended Posts

Guest 3cffts

I am doing some terrascenery and find that the land use files appear to code the airfields in urban areas as mixed use residential - instead of the area around the runways appearing as grass, it shows as a built-up area! Does anyone have an easy solution for making these airfields grass covered? Cheers, Brian.

Yup:1) Download shapefiles from 2000 Census that include details such as parks and airports. Assign grass texture to those shapes and many airports will fill in properly when the manually-added shapefiles are rendered along with the TerraScene files.2) For airport areas where the Census data doesn't fill these in, create a flat model using TerraModels. Use a terminal chart to get the exact shape - TerraModels can produce an underlay from this. Add a grass texture for the model and it ends up under the runways and taxiways - works well.

Hello Randall: You have the answer to my problem! .... but I do not see from the TerraModels manual how to create an 'underlay', or how to get a grass texture. I don't see the grass texture listed in the objects menu. Do I have to create an 'object thumbnail' as a 'selectable stock object'? And if I used such an object would it not sit on top of the taxiways? Many thanks, Brian.

Brian,Sorry about the delay in responding - this is a busy time of the year for me.First of all, TerraModels doesn't provide a texture for this purpose - you have to make your own with a graphics program, then place the files in the Fly!II Art folder. I used Photoshop to create a 128x128 pixel TIF file. I used some of the grass textures extracted by TerraScene, then edited them for size and changed the file type.To create the grass area, use the Create An Irregular Ground Polygon Tool, apply the grass texture, then Generate and Place the object.Important: the Scenery or Object Placement Properties must be set for No Z-Buffer (flat object)"This is a new feature added with Fly2 patch 230. It will allow flat terrain objects to be displayed, without using a Z-Buffer. This will eliminate the unsightly
