Excessive 16bit 256 texture need?

Recommended Posts

Guest ben_

I'm not sure if I'm doing/reading this correctly, but when I set overcast and fly through cloud, my system starts to crawl.I took a screenshot with texture details - the 256 value on the second line is over 400 for my blank screen. (when I checked with MemCalc I need over 85 MB - a bit much for my GF264MB card ).Am I doing something wrong here?

You're not doing anything wrong. Clouds are very complex and use 32-bit 256K textures. So you're actually correct. I would up the 32-bit textures in your RENDER.ini (use TexMemCalc to balance other textures) until you get something you're satisfied with.I can't exactly advise you since I have a GF4 Ti4600 - 128MB of on-board video RAM. Sorry I couldn't help more.-DK----David KohlFly! II v230Dell 8200 P4/1.8G, 512MB RAM, Nvidia GF4 Ti4600 v28.83, WinXP Home Edition.CH Pro Pedals and Yoke USB.

Ben,I don't think the max hits line is the one we are concerned with. The general wisdom is that the unique hits line should not exceed the slots allocated line so it looks like your problem is not related to an insufficient number of 256 slots. Unfortunatly there is not a definitive resource on this. I believe the relationship between the unique hits and slots allocated lines came from a Rich Harvey post on this shortly after Fly II was released.

DeanMy apologies for not responding to your message. I was interstate for a week and even though I could read your msg I didn't have my password at the internet cafe to be able to write a reply! Before I went I had a render.ini which improved the cloud flying but I'm not sure if it has any other side effects - more testing needs to be done.ThaaanksBen
