Fly!2 Coastlines are now editable!!!!

Recommended Posts

Guest Colins2

Hi Everyone,At last, after a lot of frustrating attempts, I can now edit coastlines with a CAD program. This is an addition to TerraShape and will be available as soon as I clean the code up a bit. What you can do:The coastlines are made up of polygons that define the land area. These polygons are defined for each ground tile within each globe tile. The process is twofold; you must change the polygon to reflect the real coastline and then import your changed coastline file into Fly!These files are contained within COAST.POD (so make a backup!!!)If you 'extend' the coastline, as in the case of Nice, then you should also change the underlying texture in GLOBE.PODGLOBE.POD contains a huge file called TILETYPE.IMG which basically has a 1 byte value for every ground tile in the world. The easiest and safest way to change these values is with Elrond & Jim Kanold's excellent Ground Type Transformer program.Nice was a good example to work from as the taxiways were in the water. I can now taxi all around the airport without sinking.I'll try and post some screenshots later today.Colin

Hi Everyone,As a follow-up to the above post, here are some pictures:The first 2 are the default view of Nice airport.http://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/colins2/images/fly!0008.jpghttp://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/colins2/images/fly!0012.jpgNow here's a shot with the ground tiles *transformed* so that the required ground tiles are now land. This shot is before fixing the actual coast polygons.http://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/colins2/images/fly!0014.jpgAnd here are some shots of the *new* Nice airport. Please note that I have just applied the same texture to this new area as the surrounding terrain. I have made no attempt to do this very accurately, it is more *proof of concept* as shown than any effort to draw the coastline as it really is.Also note, that this area could now be TerraScened and would work properly. I have taxied all over this airport (not slewed) and all the taxiways are solid ground, as is the surrounding countryside. You can see this on the last pic, where I have *parked* on the coastline.http://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/colins2/images/fly!0016.jpghttp://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/colins2/images/fly!0018.jpghttp://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/colins2/images/fly!0020.jpghttp://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/colins2/images/fly!0022.jpghttp://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/colins2/images/fly!0024.jpghttp://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/colins2/images/fly!0027.jpghttp://www.avsim.com/hangar/fly/colins2/images/fly!0028.jpgThis editing was done with the latest build of TerraShape and will be available soon.Colin

Excellent Colin. Can you refresh my memory on something? If you didn't want to manually unpod COAST, how would you superseed V005162 with a new one (or any gtp or set thereof for that matter)? Its been a while since I've played with the inards of Fly! II, so I hope you don't mind my asking to refresh my nogin here...In other words, once you were ready to distribute, how would one go about podding the new scenery to be recognized automatically once installed? I realize a GTI would have to be imported, but beyond that...Thanks - and again, wonderful work,http://members.rogers.com/eelvish/elrondlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif

Hi Elrond,I believe that there is a way to do it with the file manager. I was doing something one day and got a message that 1 file had been updated in the pod I was working on.I haven't needed to pod anything manually for a while now, so I'm a bit rusty too.I will have to check more so that I can put a method in the manual.Colin

Gents-just allow the new POD (POD3 format please!) to have a lower priority than the (default?) 999. That way, your new POD will be loaded instead.I *think* this should work.
