Who wants to create shapefiles for....

Recommended Posts

Guest swathdiver

Baseball diamonds and swimming pools! Come on, that's what we see when we're in the real thing! How about a shapefile for buildings that have writing on their roofs, like Target on the approach to La Guardia. Just kidding! But the diamonds would be cool. How about all those circular crops out west when flying to San Francisco?Ok, Ok. A more serious note, I posted a while back about a map that would highlight the installed globe tiles on your computer. Any ideas on how to do it? Is there a way to get Terrascene's map and simply highlight them?JamesHmmm... Tastes Like Chicken!

Hi GeorgRight click on each little square here and save jpgs to a new folder inside Terrascene textures folder.http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...gOperations.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...AndPastures.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...s-Vineyards.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...tural-Other.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...t-Deciduous.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...t-Evergreen.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...orest-Mixed.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...n-Abandoned.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...-Commercial.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...-Industrial.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...dCommercial.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...Urban-Mixed.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...ecreational.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...Residential.jpg http://mypage.bluewin.ch/pascal_lsgc/terra...nsportation.jpgCreate a TS project which covers the region you want (one globe tile is nice).Open the "Day-land types", and select for each land type one of the small textures (file names might help). Or check "color only" and select a color. In "Day-line types" set all to none and then select a solid color for each type you want to appear on the map (let coastlines and easements unchecked!) Change the width of each, 2 pixels for main roads and 1 or even 0(!) for everything else. Don't forget to check the update button each time! Don't forget the antialiasing as well (it's on by default).Open the project options and change the "Image redolution" to 60, 100 or whatever scale you want. The number unit is meters/pixel. The image size indicated can help to choose the scale. Enter the "Output Filename", go for the shading and snow options you want. A map is usually nicer without snow!Save your project and render the day scenery only using USGS data and no slicing!!TS works a while and you have a beautiful map in the output folder. Add whatever you want with a graphic editor, and convert it from .TGA to a convenient format (Irfanview is a good viewer/converter)If you have any problem with this mini-tutorial, ask me!Best regards!Pascal

Hello Pascal, thank you very much for your mini-tutorial, it's a brilliant idea to show scenery data in that way. I think it will work with shapefiles as well. Irfanview is already my favourite viewer/converter for a long while.I will give feed-back as soon as I have a result (.. have to be on work for 26 hours, sleep then ..).Happy FLYing!Georg

Hello Pascal, want to give you feed-back. I tried your mini-tutorial and it turned out to be a wonderful "debugging-tool" for a TS-beginner like me. So I made a post as a hint for other FLYer outside the USA who may have the same problems like me (Subject: "To all Terrascene Beginners - Pascals TS "debugging-tool""). I think you don't mind.Thank you once again for your help!Georg (EDDW)BTW: 26 hours was not a joke. Have to do it 5 times a month. If you are lucky, you get some interrupted sleep the night. And you sleep VERY BAD afterwards! The profit of this job: have more than 100 hours of helicopter flight as a crew-member in the cabin the year. 50% hard work, 50 % PURE FUN!!!! Keep FLYing!!!
