Hi Peter K,Very nice sight. I checked Utah, and sure enough Wendover was on the list. Triggered some not so old memories deploying there in support of Redflag. Theres a link to a restoration project of Wendover with some photos. Believe I saw some of the old barracks they housed us in.Remember the Stateline Casino I think it was called. Other places come to mind. Real nice remembering back on it.Thanks,Jim B.You wouldn't happen to have any photos you could send of the Tucson Itl tower and terminal would you? It'd be in support of the package thats in work. I was born shortly after WWII. There are even less buildings now, and most, such as the Hangar that housed the B-29's are off limits to the causual observer. But the area is still interesting. The 1952 movie, "Above and Beyond" with Robert Taylor as Col. Paul Tibbets gives a glimps of what life was like during the War at Wendover. In 1991 they had a reuinion there (which I attended) for all survivors of the Enola Gay & Bock's Car. Both Paul Tibbets and Charles Sweeney were there. It was a lot of interesting conversation..... to say the least! I also fly there quite often. There are two new re-paved runways and not much traffic since the casino's don't bring in commercial travelers anymore. I live by KSLC and it's a fun hop for breakfast. The casino's will send a van to pick you up.L.Adamson

From your description, and the photos I saw at that sight, poor ole Wendover had become a shell of what it was when I was there. We were deployed there in 83ish I think. The barracks we stayed in were basically dusted out and the roofs sealed. Beddings were the infamous government issue fold-out canvas cots with sleeping bag on top(garnished with mosquito netting). The other buildings we weren't using in support of redflag seem to be in dis-repair. We didn't use the chowhall as shown in the photo at the web sight, we were using a mobile, out-door set-up. Wish I could remember, or had photos of the hangers we used for major aircraft maintenance. If you stood facing them, way off to the right in the distance is where it seemed the civilians had a general aviation activity going on. All tovague to remember clearly.Aside from the casino's there was a neat place to go on the Utah side that housed one of the land speed record holders. The Blueflame(?) I think it was called. Got that record right there at the salt flats I think. Another form of "entertainment" was to run towards some mountains (maybe the locals didn't think they were mountains, but they seemed pretty big to us maintenance troops), skirting the flats(or maybe it was regular desert floor), climb up to the top ridge line. We'd keep going along it till we'd get to what seemed to be the highest point. Breath taking views. One day one of the guys planted his t-shirt up there. Had brought an old stick with him on the climb. He did that 'cause the 't' had the American flag on it's front. Silly things young fellas do to stay busy and fend off boredom. Took some pics of that. We'd climbed down from another way to get a view of some kind of radar facility for the run back. A strange thing another fella did was to drag a "pickled" duck in from out of the flats and hoisted it up outside his baracks door. Claimed it as his mascot. Needless to saw the "butter-bar" was livid when he saw that. Started having open-ranks everyday and fuss at us for dusty boots. He didn't last long. They shipped him back to home base. PeterK No...I dont..Im from Massachusetts and the base next to me is OTISANGB which in its hay day was the largest ADC base in the worldas OTIS AFB...Lots of pictures from there..As A kid C121s would fly by along with F101s and c119s...there was also a Bomarcbase there which long abandoned is still in tact...nowthe daily pair of f15s and the evening c130 fly over... Did you try http:www.airliners.net with thousands of picturessomthing must a tucson Int control tower in them... Im a bit biased on the scenery front in FU3s Tucson areaMainly wanting to fly out of Davis Monthan AFB north up to Marana,Pinal Air park,Chandler Memorial and Falcon field...PeterK
