The hard way to get accurate terrain elevation model

Recommended Posts

Using values from DTE30 gives about 16x16 real elevation points for a megatile all the rest is fractal interpolation with a large zoom of 20. Result are rather bad as show here for the small island Lundy in the UK-Region.A better approach is much harder using elevation level lines from a map, coloring to level area, http://www.agtim.ch/fu3/elundy1.jpgthen resizing to the megatile size of 4096x4096 and then paste without the sea level on the megatile texture. http://www.agtim.ch/fu3/elundy2.jpgAfter repainting the border to the sea to a correct level and painting the remaining sea level in black http://www.agtim.ch/fu3/elundy3.jpgit can the be imported with the newest version of GeotileViewer (coming soon) to get a nicer elevation map and also with the next version of GenQuadrant generation of the classification map is possible in a short time. Left is the final elevation map after export from geotiles.tag file, the classification for Lundy http://www.agtim.ch/fu3/elundy4.jpgand to the right the bad elevation map generated with DTE30 only resulting in a bad elevation view.http://www.agtim.ch/fu3/lundy7.jpgThe better version looks like thathttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/lundy8.jpgsome more impressions from a visit of Lundy by Lake Renegade. http://www.agtim.ch/fu3/lundy6.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/lundy5.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/lundy1.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/lundy2.jpg:-wave agtim

Definitely more realistic, not as flat - although is this practical for the main island? (i.e. England!). Sounds like a lot of work, espfinding the sea borders. To me the terrain elevation is very important - I think it has a big effect on the sensation of flying.Robert D.

yes for the sea borders it's a must but inside UK DTE30 is good enough. We have the region around of london with this level of quality and it's usable.Your model in London are placed on the right elevation, but Stansted is outside of the current elevation area see the big step in the south of Stansted Airport thats the end of Elevation tile with the high returning to the default 80ft of the blank tile.Andr
