Baron "Big Red"

Recommended Posts

I just uploaded my version of the Baron. Please consider it as a beta version since I'd prefer to be able to use an improved texture map. As it stands I've recreated Ed Weber's "Big Red" as well as I can, given the limitations of the original FU3 texture mapping. These limits include some rather illogical texture allocation as well as texture mirroring. Some areas of the fuselage draw textures from other places and the mirroring makes it impossible to make the left side different from the right one. In practice this means step guards on both wings or none at all. Ansgar has promised to create a new Baron with a better texture mapping and Steve has a new panel coming up. However, my main emphasis has been on applying the internal views, kindly supplied by Ed Weber.best regards,Hans Petter

According to the library counter 35 guys have downloaded it by now. Any feedback? I did notice one slight anomaly myself as I downloaded it to check the integrity of the zip file -- the nose of the aircraft is gray. This resulted from a test that I performed a long time ago and I'd forgotten all about it. Quick fix: Go to file 50. It provides textures for the forward side of the fuselage. For reasons unknown, that gray spot at the far right textures the nose cone. Make it lighter and the nose will blend with the rest of the "white".If anyone wants to use the internal bitmaps for another livery it should be quite easy to edit out the red trimming on the engines / wings.best regards,Hans Petter

Hans thank you for this fine plane. Especially the inner views are well done.First I had a crc error in the zip but try to use and it was ok airway :-)The gray nose is just not repainted after a small crash. We will have to makes UK livering also, it's not realistic to fly all the time in UK with Nxxxx immatriculations. In Switzerland we have HB... no idea what they have in the UK.http://www.agtim.ch/fu3/bred1.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/bred2.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/bred3.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/bred4.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/bred5.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/bred6.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/bred7.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/bred8.jpghttp://www.agtim.ch/fu3/bred9.jpg:-wave agtim

The UK format is G-XXXX as Cristian said, where all the characters are letters instead of the US letter/number mix. It is usual in comms to drop the first two letters unless there is another aircraft with the same two letters in the vicinity. Thus an aircraft with the registration G-VFAB would be "Golf Alpha Bravo". I wonder if it would be possible to change the sound files as well as the aircraft textures. It would certainly make a difference to have the Tower calling you "Golf Lima Golf"...

A UK livery with proper callsigns would be welcome. But then, I think we should wait for Ansgar's new model before attempting any more repaints. For future versions I'd like to spend more time on the interior night bitmaps. If you load the sim, select the front forward quarter view and hit "D" to roll into the night you'll see that I edited light spots for the night view. Ideally, all the night views ought to reflect that the light comes from different sources at night. A good start is to darken a day view but that won't change where the light is coming from. I might darken the engines / wings more than the internal parts, as well as editing shadows / light spots on the internal parts. But then, the main thing is that the perspectives are right, thanks to photos by the owner of "Big Red", Ed Weber. All the pan-around views show what a Baron pilot would see from the left seat. Note that the left views are closer to the observer (pilot) while the right views show more of the cockpit. I'd hope to see other liveries based on these cockpit bitmaps and I'd be delighted if anyone could perfect the texturing of these interior views without compromising the angles / perspectives :-)best regards,Hans Petter

Thanks for this wonderful Baron! Its a delight to fly and looks excellent - it is currently my plane of choice for scenery work since it turns quite sharply and cleanly. It also looks good on scenery snapshots!Rob D.

Hi Hans,"Big Red" is a nice flying aircraft. Contolled flight feels predictable and smooth. Lots of engine to compensate for my wandering out of the flight envelope. The interior views are great. They genuinely give a true sence of perspective when moving through the views. My aircraft of choice for Fu3Pro challenge. I've been hopping around with it in the Seattle region. Haven't yet been to the SF region in her. Oddly, I've cdt twice when flying her. As its only happened twice, don't know if it's my pc or Big Red. Only occurs when I'm in outside view panning, during sunsets. Frames are about 18-20 at the time.I suspect this new AMD 1.44 processor I installed isn't as powerful or stable as my old AMD 750. It certainly hasn't improved frame rates. They haven't changed a bit. But thats way off topic.Thank you very much Hans for the pleasure of this fine aircraft,Take care,Jim B.

Thanks for the accolades but we should really thank Ed Weber, the owner of "Big Red" who provided us with the images. As I've stated before, I expect this to be taken further when the professional designers, Steve and Ansgar chime in. Specifically, the textures can be made better with Ansgar's upcoming Baron model with a revised texture mapping.I really doubt that there's anything here that can crash FU3. Usually crashes occur when there's something wrong with the panel gauges and this is our well-tested Tom Wunder Baron panel.best regards,Hans Petter
