London 3DS Models

Recommended Posts

Guest andy9164

I have started a new long post on this subject as i feel it could be very useful to us and want to keep it seperate. As you may have read on the previous post I have made contact with a 3D Modelling chap at UCL (University College London). This is his specialist field. Having said that, I dont want to tread on anybodys toes and take away any enjoyment from those people who like me are having fun learning about and making models. In my quest to find an easy way to get some models, I asked him today a simple question regarding numbers of polygons in his models and below is pasted his reponse. I feel sure we could work together with this guy and he seems prepared to help us."Thanks for the screenshots, the Canary Wharf model is quite neat. Ourmodelling at CASA is aimed at low polycounts thus it can run over the web. The realism comes from the optimised textures.Buck Palace is approx 400 polys so its a nice simple model. Have you thought of using building heights draped over your arieal photograph? This would give a good approximation of London. We are currently working on a project called Virtual London at CASA. Next week i should have some examples to put online so you can see what im getting at.I'm intrigued at getting our work on London into a Flight Sim and thenmaking it available online (we have done some similar type work withTrainz). Could you let me know what software your running and I will see if i can get a copy in our Lab.As i said a bit up to my ears at the moment but after next Tuesday I'll take some time to see what i can send you as well as loading up some of out models into the actual software from this end."So my questions to you good people are.1) Does anybody have any objections to me persuing this and can I count on the FU3 Model Developers here to go along with me. 2) Can we use this guy3) If so what software would we need to supply him. (FU3, UK region, Fixmip, Model View, N3D2SE - any more?) 4) Could somebody write a detailed description (quickly) onto how the models are made and the process needed to get them into FU3.I will leave it up to you all to give me your thoughts and comments.Andy

If you wait for "good people" to reply, we'll be here all day. So although failing your category, here's a response from me.If you wait for me to complete London, it will take me a few more weeks. About 63 million. It is possible I will need to include modelling of the next ice age.I have enjoyed making models, enormously, and its been great seeing so many other people picking up the skills. But London is big. So if there is some alternative way, then marvellieux (as Luc would say if he spoke French as badly as me). Go for it. I think this is very exciting news, and I fully support it.Check out my tutorials (which you have) on getting models into FU3. The main tools I use are:FU3FLEDMODELVIEWADOBE PHOTOSTYLERNOTEPADFIXMIPNote that at present Hans Petter and I are developing LCA. Is it possible to leave Canary Wharf and East alone for the moment so we can have our kicks? Then if we can integrate the two efforts, there will be some mutual advantage. And if it comes to nothing, then at least Hans and I can still put something together for LCA. And I think it should be possible for us to develop models together. And if you do take over London, then I (sob) will quietly walk away (sob) into the sunset ....and start work on Cardiff, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Loch Ness, Isle of Skye, Iceland, Baffin Island, Kamsky Pen, Korea, Indonesia, Northern Territory, Sydney, ....If you need a more detailed description of modelmaking, can you email me Andy?

>If you wait for "good people" to reply, we'll be here all day. So although failing your category, here's a response from me...... I was wondering: is there an official list of who the "good people" are? I for one thought we were all good people here! ;-)But I think that any possibility of help with the developing of the region is a great thing, as long as it doesn't clash with the work of other people (it's pointless to do double-work)...Anyway, Andy, after reading your post I had a little concern... Can you email me your address please, so I can tell you about it! :-)Cristian
