Low and Slow in a 747

Cool, huh?I think it's somewhere in the Caribbean. I have some Dash-8 shots taken there, including an 'after' shot showing half the beach being caught-up in the resulting draft! Obviously these people here ignored the "Low Flying Aircraft - Please leave beach when aircraft approaching" sign!You wouldn't want to be beach fishing with a 12' rod and a large lure to swing - I reckon you'd catch the plane :-lol...or someone's bikini ;)Jon Point*************************(effyouthree@hotmail.com)*************************

I downloaded the image and checked it out. It doesn't seem to be "doctored". I zoomed in and looked around and along the fuselage for evidence of cut and paste but it all looks authentic.The aircraft has a healthy attitude with (next to) full flaps, which means 150 - 170 knots. Judging by the altitude it looks like it will touch down within 5 seconds. This means that the beachcombers and the swimmers are right next to the runway. I would think this would be restricted area.Anyway, the downwash and the turbulence may not be as strong as we would tend to think. I've been close to (below) landing airliners and it didn't get nasty until they engaged reverse thrust.Hans Petter

Good morning Hans,well, I also had not found any hints that this is a fake. But simply think of that for any circumstance the B747 must interrupt the landing and pushes for a pull up again!Boy, that beach should be very clean after giving full thrust...... ;-)I have found there also a mpeg video which shows a big landrover crossing the thrust area of an starting jumbo (~50m after it). Er.....that looks a bit ridiculous to me.Mind you, the pilot appears to be flying the plane correctly. Plenty of flaps, high angle of attack....and presumably a suitably stable trim value :-)Chris Low.

The beach is at St Martin in the Caribean or St Maarten in Dutch as the island is divided into two halves. I (or rather we) spent our honeymoon there in Dec 2000. We flew in on a 747 from Corsair. I convinced my newlywed to go accompany me to the beach to see the approaching aircraft. We sat on the beach for about 15" and we saw and heard about 3 Dash 8's. From that experience I am tempted to say that this photo has been touched as it would literally deafening. I do remember warning signs but not the exact inscription. We where the only two on the beach as you can imagine there are far better/quieter beaches on the Island. Another reason I would say the photo is a "montage"Cheers, QvdG

Hi Quentin,I've never been there but I don't think it's a fake. I've seen, at Airliners.net, a lot of shots from that place, all of them with aircrafts so low. OK, maybe this is lower than others, or maybe it's an illusion because it's so big. Anyway, the shadow gives another hint on its actual position.At the airliners site, there is also a shot of that same 747 taken from right under its flight path - the photographer said that, after taking the photo, he ran away scared! :-)If I find the link to that photo, I will post it here.Cristian
