Info on FU 3 requested

Recommended Posts

Guest JakeInHartsel

I am new to the forum. I am a licensed pilot, but now retired and can't afford the cost of a new plane. I used to fly FU 1 and FU 2, but my current XP machine doesn't seem to work with them. I plan to reinstate an old machine just for FU 1 and 2, but I am also considering finding a copy of FU 3 especially if it will work on XP and if it flies reasonably realistically. I was very happy with FU 1 and a little disappointed in FU 2, because the flying was not quite as realistic as FU 1.I would like to get your opinions of the realism of FU 3 and if it will run on an XP machine. In general I spend most of my flying time on simulators shooting landings and doing acrobatics, just like when I was flying the real thing.Thank youJakeInHartselSitting at 9,700 ft. msl

JakeInHartsel,Welcom abord,I dont know about FU1, I never had that working at all, but I hav FU2 working as a stand alown sim on XP, and it works OK povided you use the pach.Sumone els will hav to giv you a link to the pach, Iv lost it. But I also hav FU3 on my XP which is much beter in ny opinion cus when youinstall FU3 you can also install the ceanary from FU2 (Sanfransisco) as well as the ceanary that cums with FU3 (Seattle). In fact for FU3 there are hundreds mor add ons than there is for FU2 or FU1.There is an FU3 for sale on one of thees threds.Take my advis and grab FU3 while you can!Thay are bicuming as scairs as roking hous manooer. If you do get FU3 then cum back and ask for the pach, that I can giv you. glidernut

Hello,Patches for Flight2 can be found here. The patch is built into the advnture builder.(My thank you's to Lars for letting me know of this one)http://www.flightsim.no/file/Flight_Unlimi...ures/index.htmlAlso here is a Eidos French sight that still has Flight 2 files:http://www.eidos.fr/downloads/search.html%...DUTF-8%26sa%3DNMany Flight2 and 3 files are also available at Flightsim.com. It used to be difficult to get on their download server though. Don't know if it's still that way:http://www.flightsim.com/cgi/kds?$=main/forum.htmBest way I had found to get all the Flight Unlimited files to list is to:In the "File Libraries (Downloads)", select "search file libraries, "Search only file section: flight unlimitedII (if that is your interest, if not select flight unlimitedIII), in "file name" type in an *, select start search, and it'll give you a list of what it has available for download.Hope this was helpful,JimB

Yes, while other sites may have a few old goodies Avsim is the only site to consider for FU III downloads these days. Thanks for hosting our files :-)Hans Petter

Folks,"Thanks for hosting our files :-)"Oh yeah :-wave I'd like to extend that to;"...and thanks for saving our beloved sim".Without the momentum gained here, we would have precious little...* Knowledge about the sim* New models* New aircraft* Friends with which to share our interestsUndertaking pilot training would've been much harder without all you knowledgable folk sharing your experiences. Nicest bunch of folk you'd ever hope to virtually meet :-waveRegards,**************Jonathan Point**************"I'd rather be down here wishing I was up there than up there wishing I was down here"

Tell me something, Jon. Have you attempted to fly "the real thing" without touching the trim controls ? :-lolChris Low.

Chris,Yes, and it's very uncomfortable, even in the small planes they let me fly! For example, takeoff in a Warrior (sorry about mentioning such a high performance aircraft, but it serves it's purpose - and it's cheap to hire), hit full throttle and run down the runway. Rotate and, as you lift off, a bit of rudder to counteract the wash (right wing dips - not much but obvious). Settle into 1000fpm climb (80kts). At this point, you will notice that you are no longer pulling on the yoke but pushing it! As you level off at 2500 and start to pick up speed, you can feel the yoke push harder as the speed climbs. By 120kts, it's a strong effort required to hold it there.By comparison, apply a bit of trim at 80kts whilst climbing and you can hold the yoke with 2 fingers. On level-off (this'll scare ya...), DON'T push the yoke forward (it's hard anyway), just start rolling the trim wheel forward and place the nose where you want it. At this point, take a breath and enjoy the scenery......because you CAN - not having to hold onto that yoke like an angler landing a shark :-eekOf course, in FU3 you can get away without it - only because the yoke doesn't talk back :-waveTake all this with a grain of salt because I'm only a novice - I'm sure Jake can give you a more complete rundown. Truth is, I fly on trims a lot in FU3 because, when developing flight models, you HAVE to find the stable point-of-flight and ride it - to prove you've got it right. With the Dash-8, it was impossible to fly on trims until I increased the elevator area. Interestingly, this brought a few other 'numbers' into range too.:-waveRegards,**************Jonathan Point**************"I'd rather be down here wishing I was up there than up there wishing I was down here"

Jon,Ahh, but the trick is to REDUCE POWER after you have taken off. This stops the speed from increasing, and the nose from rising too far. Of course, perhaps you are just too much of a chicken to try this in a real plane :-lolWhen I take off in the Beechjet in FU3, I immediately reduce power to around 80 per cent. The nose is still rising at this point, but it then starts to drop down. I apply a degree of back pressure on the joystick to keep the nose at a certain position, and then gently ease off to keep the plane climbing at a steady angle. Within a few seconds, I can release the joystick pressure completely....and from then on I NEVER have to push or pull the joystick again for the duration of the flight. Descent and ascent rates are entirely controlled by adjusting the throttle. It's so EASY !Of course, my airspeed remains a constant 115 knots at all times (which is what makes trimless flight possible in FU3), but I don't mind. It just makes the FU3 world seem larger than it really is, which is precisely what I want.Chris Low.PS. I love your Dash 8, but I wish that it had engines BENEATH the centre of gravity. That pitching up when reducing power is a pain in the ****

In general I spend most of>my flying time on simulators shooting landings and doing>acrobatics, just like when I was flying the real thing.I'm no pilot, so I can't comment on the realism other than to point out that Seamus Blackley, who was the physics guru at Looking Glass responsible for the original FU, had left the company before FU2 came out, and so they had to get someone else to program the physics. IIRC, no one could understand his code :) This is most likely why FU2 felt less realistic to you (Seamus was quite possibly the most skilled physics programmer working in the games industry at the time).FU3 is essentially an improved FU2, and I would suspect that the flight models are better than they were in FU2, but I don't know how good they are. There are a lot of community-made add-ons available here at avsim, however, and maybe the flight models have been tweaked sufficiently that you will be satisfied.Being more like FU2, FU3 certainly does not have the same focus on aerobatics that the original had. There are none of the specialised views and training aids for performing the manoeuvres. Of course, if you used to do them for real, you can probably survive without those :)I'm not really aware of any flight sim since FU that had that sort of aerobatic focus, though, so your plan of getting the original running again sounds like a good one.

Based on my personal experience, it is very difficult to get the DOS version of FU1 to work under XP (even though it's possible), but it's a different story with the Win95 version... All I had to do to make it work, was to install it, enable the Win95 compatibility mode, and it worked! :)Cristian

My FU1 is the Dos version. Is there a patch to upgrade it to Windowas 95, or do you have to find a whole new version?I loaded FU2 in and got it working fine except for my USB Joy Stick. I did set it for Win 95 compatability, but that didn't help. I guess I will have to dig up my old game port Joy Stick.
