Hi guys,I've always wanted to learn ifr on a simulator so thought I'd give the lessons a look. Apart from not being too impressed with the instructor :-lol (I mean he says he's doing one thing but he's obviously not!!) they don't really provide enough information about the instruments and how to use them or provide enough detail about the various heights and stuff you need to know to get in safely. Any simple and shallow learning curve stuff out there that would ease me in to it?Thanks,Duke

As to where all the instruments are fo reach plane, that would take a manual or too. There is some info in the FU2 and FU3 manuals. So just a few very basic things.I learnt on FS4 - it was simple back then. You had two main IFR gauges:1) ADF - almost obsolete but great for flying directly too or away or for mathematicians who can calculate bearing intercepts in their heads. Very easy to use in the Lear Jet.2) VOR - in various forms including with distance measuring and speed towards gauges - better than ADF since it adds information about what radial from the ground station that you are on.3) ILS - a set of nav aids to help with landing (mainly a glideslope indicator which tells you whether you are too high or too low, and a direction indicator giving you left/right indication, often displayed on your HSI (attitude indicator). That plus the runway orientation allows you to descnd on the flightpath through heavy cloud to the Decision Height (DH - also only on the Lear Jet in FU3) at which point you simply ask "can I see the runway?" - yes means land, no means GO ROUND.4) Your usual "T" of instruments to keep the pointy end of the plane on the right heading - roll, pitch, yaw, altitude and speeds.Nowadays you have both of those plus one more:1) GPS (only implemented in FU3 for Lear Jet - in form of scrolling positional map showing important ground features such as navaids and airports).2) TACAN - absolutely brilliant long distance navigation, linked to "fly to" indicators on your attitude indicator that tell you how to move the yoke to be on track. Not implemented in FU3 because it makes life too easy.Plenty of pilot books out there too for written info. Go here for expert help on line: http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/index.htmHey I learnt all this stuff 65 million years ago, and its probably changed somewhat. Someone else like to clarify, add, fix, rewrite, ...Robert.

I think that I know what he means about the training lessons in FU3. I seem to remember wanting to learn how to fly IFR, but the lesson itself is completely useless for the job. It told me nothing about how I am supposed to work out where the runway is when I'm flying through thick cloud. To this day, my "FU3 PPL" only allows me to fly under clear blue skies, and at no more than 150 knots ;-)

Jon,Is that Saab 340 under quarantine somewhere between Sydney and Ulverston ? I was expecting it to arrive over a month ago, but it hasn't appeared yet ;-)I haven't touched FU3 so far in 2007 (I'm far too busy with GT Legends and GTR2), and I need something to persuade me to take to the skies again.Chris Low.PS. I have recently upgraded my graphics card (from a 128MB Radeon 9800 Pro to a 256MB GeForce 7600GT), but I am puzzled that the framerates aren't very impressive. A standard shot of an AI airliner high above the San Francisco landscape showed around 15 frames per second, and a parked shot at San Francisco International showed only 10 !!! :-hmmmThere is nothing wrong with the card itself, since it runs GTL and GTR2 like s**t off a shovel* !* For anyone who is interested, I can race against 35 highly detailed AI cars in GTR2 with the following settings:-1280x1024 resolutionHighest quality texturesAll detail sliders slammed to the right (and that includes SHADOWS).4x FSAA and 8x anisotropic filtering.Smooth framerates at all times with my Athlon 64 3200+ powered PC.
