see when u take off and the tower control(not inc. unicom) at your airport says contact a think its seatlle approach and when u connect to that frequency u have three options which one do u choose to go to your airport cos i pick choose vectors ils and it nevers lets me land it always says 'ur not in a position to execute a safe approach' and i dont know what it means when it says intercept the localiser

This might be because you are going too fast, so that as you intercept the tower doesn't recognise this and revectors you, so choose a slower plane until you know what to expect. Of course this would not make sense if you have never used a localiser before, but just in case here's an intro:Using the localiser:Some runways use instruments to help planes land. This is called an Instrument Landing System (ILS), and is accessed by tuning a particular runway frequency into your radio. For example, if you are landing the Baron at London City Airport, you would tune the ILS radio to 111.70.This gives you access to two bits of information:Glideslope: whether you are on the correct angle of descentLocaliser: whether your heading and position matches the runway. This is represented on your HSI by a small dot graph in green lights next to your speed tape, and by a needle that moves over the front of the HSI ball. Keep both centred and you are on the correct descent trajectory - so then all you need to worry about is undercarriage, airspeed, stalls, flaps, undercarriage, checklists, downdrafts, weather cocking, wind speed, lights, undercarriage, clearance from other aeroplanes, listening to the control tower, preparing for go around, fuel, engine performance, flare and a cup of coffee. On older planes, both needles were put on a specialised VOR dial, and would make a nice cross pattern if you were on the glideslope and positioned correctly. The message to "intercept the localiser" is Tower saying "I've finished my job and put you close enough. Now its up to you to use the ILS system to get on the runway. Have a nice day."If you have the FU2 manual, there are some good descriptions of the instruments for each specific plane in FU2, and how to respond to ATC for different situations. Otherwise, there are some very good web sites out there that can give you more detail.Cheers, and Happy Landings,Robert.

"This might be because you are going too fast"This is never a problem when I'm using my own special technique ;-)

I've never bothered with ILS approaches whilst using FU3. I prefer to use the "traffic advisories" option, slap a ruler up against the map screen, estimate the bearing required to fly DIRECTLY to my destination, and then enter the pattern when I arrive.Who needs a GPS system when you have a ruler ? :-lol

You're right Chris. And I think checklists need to be modified to take these real world effects into account. I'm fed up with checklists that tell you to kick tyres, check fuel, set OBI, HSI and GPS, check pitot tubes, unstrap wings, attach tailplane, set seatbelt warning signs, load passengers etc etc. We need checklists for the real sim. Here's a start.Flightplanning:Do you plan to fly? If so, boot computer.Fuel load:Have you had lunch yet? Check snacks availability.Set drinks to PRESENT and HOT.Or COLD if the alcohol content in any way differs from zero. Walkaround:Walk around seat and sitdown.Startup:Go back to study. Get ruler.Click icon. Click next icon. Click next icon.Check flaps fully down (this one for Chris). Start engine.(Switch off engine. Answer phone. Restart engine.)Well, that's a start. But I still use ILS for the big airports, not when I'm just mucking around sightseeing though. Avagoodweegendall,Robert.

I remember the first time I used ILS in FU3. I had built my first complete airport (GTF, which The Captain released about a week before I was ready...) and I'd put the ILS in according to the charts. All I needed to do was test it...At about the same time, Ansgar released his 747 beta, so me being brave (a.k.a. stupid) attempted an ILS approach - or 47 :-lolEventually I gave up and used the Mooney (and still crashed - but the ILS worked...).The last time I used ILS, I clobbered one of Chris' trees about 200ft short of the runway :-roll Regards,Jon Point

Jon,I think that the latest versions of my addon packs have had those "rogue" trees removed. Mind you, they're tenacious little sods. I can hear them whinging and moaning when I take the axe to them, and even if I manage to cut them down, you can bet that another one has grown up elsewhere....just in time for the annual update pack :-lol

Don't talk about features only encountered in MSFS, (such as saving your flight) it is a very sensitive point in this forum. About ILS landing; When you don't want to be called names in crowded airspace, and thus want to respond and act properly upon the controllers request, then using the auto pilot is almost mandatory.First fix an altitude and heading, then fgure out your approach route. When you have connection with the VOR, swith to NAV intercept mode and couple of clicks vertical speed down. At some stage the ILS receiver will kick in. The ILS is a narrow beam and doesn't have the range like a VOR station. When nicely aligned on the appoaching radial, turn to approach mode and the auto pilot guides you down the glide slope. Just keep track of speed with the trottle and flaps.Switch to manual short before the airport. Now the taxi instruction from the ground to the parking spot are independent of the direction you drive. So often I get confused because the instruction don't match with what I come across during taxiing. ("You're on taxiway alpha" okay "follow to quebec." where is it?). The solution is a) always to exit left of the runway and/or :( display the taxi route with alt-F12 to see if you don't drive the wrong way arround.Cheers Erik

Jamjam,"how do u do all of that in flight unlimited 3 cos i think u can only do that in microsoft flight simulators"What? I agree there's many things you can only do in MSFS - get frustrated with load times, autogen trees in highways, the condition of wing de-icer #24 but FU3 offers something that MSFS doesn't...The FEEL of flying ;-)And no, I'm NOT biased!!!! As a part-time student-ish pilot* with experience in everything from military sims to commercial airline sims, I can assure you that MSFS gives you many things that commercial sims don't but FU3 gives something that even commercial sims don't. FEEL ;-)*'ish' - I've flown a lot more than my ticket shows :-rollRegards,Jon Point

Jon, I thought something was wrong with PAE localizer but after further investigation ,I had to bulldoze those Flight hazards out of the way. (Thanks Chris, bulldozing bill $2000.00 dollars US ). I usually fly ILS in snow storms or heavy rain with visibility a quarter mile ,cant see runway until decision height,Must trust instruments totally. AHHH the excitement of it all!CaptRolo

Captain,Don't you just love those sudden pull-ups on final? Mind you, US$2000 isn't bad for a few trees though - we had some joker this morning (Sunday), come to the door and offer to remove ONE tree for AUD$1500!I've been doing mostly 'bush flying' (i.e. VFR) recently but at some stage, I'll have to finish the larger flattened airports. Agtim is doing PAE I think? I don't suppose the ILS being a few feet high or low would make much difference though :-rollRegards,Jon Point
