First alpha ClawHammer Benchmarks! Wow!

This thing should be an absolute stunner!While the engineering sample benchmarked is only running at 800Mhz, its memory performance beats out the P4 at 1.6Ghz - with RDRAM! The test unit had DDR333. Its Quake III results were as high as the P4 at 1.6Ghz as well:800 MHz. Clawhammer: 183 FPS800 MHz. Athlon MP: 133 FPS1667 MHz. Athlon MP: 210 FPS1600 MHz. P4: 182 FPSConsidering AMD will probably release this as low as 1.6Ghz (3400+) I thought it was looking shaky... But man, it should be an absolutly insane barn burner. Quite Impressive! The really promising part of all this is that it is a 64 bit processor that is fully compatible with the current x86 command set natively (no emulation required).That means unlike the IA64, you don't have to run out and buy new versions of every piece of software you currently own, which makes for quite a price difference overall (everyone generally forgets that software costs are generally 2 to 3 times hardware costs)Nice to see AMD stoop to Intel level and combine two banks of memory into one higher performance bank. The difference here is that AMD didn't slap a licence on it and call it RAMBUS and hose us on royalties. Instead, it is using standard DDR333 available memory :-lolRay

I don't know what you're referring to with the rambus comments. If you want an Intel with DDR memory, just buy any one of several asus boards and get DDR memory with that Intel. Get it either way!!!

AMD could have gone with a new memory technology for their new chip and we, the consumers would have gotten the shaft once again with a brand new format with premium prices and no compatibility resulting in the standard "no upgrade path available" product.Instead, they have simply taken existing technology and combined it in a new way to open up double the bandwidth. "Hats off" for not doing it to the consumer is all I was indicating.Ray

OK, I understand. I was just over at newegg this morning looking at the intel prices. They're coming down. The retail box for the 2.4gig 533 processor is $402 and I finally got a look at the price of that new PC1066 ram. Must buy in pairs and 256mgs was $150 for a total of 512mg for $300. That's not that bad. Anybody know when there'll be a mobo that'll officially support that 533 with the PC1066 ram and will it allow an overclocking to say 2800??? The 2.53gig at 533 is still $634 down from $682 just a week ago. I'm watching and waiting!! $634 is to much money for a processor and that's the one I want.

hehehe' I'm getting smarter and wiser everyday. When the bid gets to where I want it, I'll grab it. Problem is I'd rather have an asus board but I want the PC1066 ram. That won't work!! Summer's here. Think I'm gonna grab my new rig this fall!! Things will have settled a bit by then. Haven't heard any FS2002 feedback from anyone on those new Intel processors either.

FS2k2 loves high memory bandwidth almost as much as it loves fast (true) floating-point performance, I'm sure you'll be more than happy with a 533MHz (effective) FSB P4 CPU. Good luck with your new system when you get it. I'm sticking with (an) Athlon setup until Claw/Sledgehammer are released. Initial round of upgrades for me: KT333 mobo w/512MB PC2700 Samsung DDR RAM, better system/CPU cooling, DVD, CD-RW, 400W PSU, awesome sound solution, broadband net access. Interim round of upgrades: KT400 mobo, Tbred CPU, dual (or quad, haven't decided) hard drives for RAID 1 or 0+1 setup, NV30/R300/Parhelia, round IDE cables, even better system cooling. Final round of upgrades: 1 (possibly more) Claw/Sledgehammer CPUs, 1GB or more PC3200 DDR RAM, larger case, even better system/CPU cooling (at this point I'll probably go for watercooling w/peltiers), dual or triple monitor setup (depending on video solution used) and probably some other minor details like input devices and such.Max Cowgill
