Spyware...

Hi Edam,I agree... I flew off the handle for some reason. While your post was very negative in its presentation to AVSIM (who don't even write the software of course), my reply was just as bad. I apologize. There have been much worse examples of accusations towards something or other on the forum lately than yours... Yours just happened to be the one that set me off. Again I apologize.I do hope you understand where it came from, however. Not only does DAP not install spyware (I checked again today with the latest version just to make sure), but you came off as accusing AVSIM for some kind of wrong doing in recommending some external software that Improves your experience all over the net. It wasn't very nice. Personally I don't like DAP because of its advertisements, so don't think I'm defending DAP here.Take care, http://members.rogers.com/eelvish/elrondlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif

LOL!While its not really funny... Thats Funny. :-)You should do exactly that Tom: open up a read-only forum to expose the rude posts and mails you and everyone else at AVSIM receive. Do it in a light-hearted manner and I'm sure it'd even be entertaining. I also bet it'd be a rude awakening for many who don't understand why AVSIM can "seem" defensive at times. Exposing such dribble would probably help some understand the seemingly unpopular positions AVSIM must take occasionally. Heck, it might even serve to cut down on the amount of the crap you get in the fist place.Doing a "Hall of Shame" forum of some kind would be great IMHO. I'm saying this knowing that I'd most assuredly have a few posts in there myself, btw. :-)Take care, http://members.rogers.com/eelvish/elrondlogo.gifhttp://members.rogers.com/eelvish/flyurl.gif

Tom, are you really sure? Do you have the latest version of Adaware? I searched the net and came up with this one: http://www.infopackets.com/freenewsarticle...nload+speed.htm . If the DAP5 license agreement quote is correct (I don't want to install and check it myself for obvious reasons) I'd say this sounds a lot like - possibly legal - spyware. I also found this article about DAP4.3 http://www.chip.de/produkte_tests/untersei...sts_162939.html by a reputable german computer magazine which lists "Spyware deinstallierbar" (spyware removable) as one of the "advantages" of this software. In the review text it says "Die Spyware l

I am running version 4.0.0.1 of DAP. The BETA 5.0 may well do some funny stuff re spyware, I can't say until I download it and give it a try, which I will later today.

I have been running version 5.0.0.6 for quite some time and no problems of Spyware at all... just the nagging commercial add at the top flashing at me... ;-)I removed one of my own posts earlier.... thought I should not publish my opinion... but I am tempted to put it back on.. if you get my drift !! :-outta Francois :-wave

"At home in the wild"[link:avsim.com/alaska/alaska_051.htm|Don's Alaskan Bush Charters]"Beavers Lead the Way"[link:www.avsim.com/vfr_center/mainpages/vfr_flights_main_page.htm]VFR Flight Center]"Looking Good Outside"

http://avsim.com/hangar/air/bfu/logo70.gifhttp://www.fssupport.com/images/moose2.gif

________________________Francois A. Okay, just to confirm that DAP is worthy of being recommended by us, and in light of Edam's comments, I tested the latest version today.I backed up my old 4.0.0.1 version of DAP and downloaded the new BETA version of 5.0. I did a spyware sweep of my system before executing the installation file of DAP 5.0. I found no ads during the initial sweep. I then installed the BETA 5.0. Did a sweep - nothing. I then connected to the AVSIM library and downloaded a 500+Kbyte file. I did a sweep again - no spyware installed. Therefore, DAP will remain on the Editor's Picks and we will continue to recommend it.Edam, I strongly suggest that you do a sweep of your system, remove all spyware, run DAP again, then run a sweep again. I think you will find different results than your first attempt.

Elrond: No big deal, we all have our days. I wasn't happy about finding all those Spyware files either.Tom: I have discovered the culprit. I repeated what I did previously. I first did a sweep and Ad-Aware discovered 2 spyware cookies from DoubleClick. Nothing unusual there. I removed them, downloaded and reinstalled DAP 5.0 BETA, ran Ad-Aware again, and came up with the same results as I had previously, then removed DAP.But I went one step further, and that was to download the latest Ad-Aware program and Reference files. I ran another sweep, came up clean, re-installed DAP again, and this time NO spyware was reported. It seems that the older Ad-Aware reference file identified DAP as spyware, and the newer one does not. Why that is so, I have no idea. At any rate, sorry for the confusion.

Edam,I came up with the exact same result as you. Without having the newest version of Ad-Aware, DAP was loaded with spyware.Ed

Thanks for confirming my results, Ed. The question remains...why did the old one report it as spyware, and the new one does not? It's perplexing. There was nothing that I could find on the Ad-Aware site that referenced that situation. I'm going to check the GRC site.
