Altimeter Check

Recommended Posts

Guest claudius41ad

Hi Folks,This may appear a bit of a "thicko" question...........If Co.Pilot is flying the plane - why does she perform an Altimeter check at FL180?I would be interested to know what is so special about FL 180. Have I missed something important and if I am flying the plane, should I do an Altimeter check at FL 180?Thank you (still learning) for any help.RegardsRoger

Roger,FL180 is the standard Transition Altitude in the US. Once you climb above the TA you should reset your altimeter pressure to 29.92". During descent as you pass through 18,000ft change it to the local pressure.Of course if you fly in Europe then the TA is different. In the UK it varies but 6,000ft (FL060) is a good average. If you use downloaded weather you might find this gauge handy. It's in the main AvSim library... fs2002pressuregauge.zip.Cheers,

Good Morning Ray,Thank you for the information. Nice to have learned something new. I shall most certainly have a look at the file that you refer to. I use FS Meteo for weather.Regards,Roger (Swindon England):-)

Ray,18,000 is the Transition Altitude (actually, it would be less than that given the pessure, so around 17,500-17,800, say). FL180 is the Transition Level.
