HIGHLIGHTS

This video presentation is the first of perhaps many to come which features the new 737-MAX8 operated by AeroMexico. AeroMexico has always been accommodating to Just Planes and by extension, the global community of aviation enthusiast. In this video, we will be travelling to Bogota and Monterrey while observing and learning about some of the new features of this intriguing aircraft.

To begin, we start off with the pilots of our round trip to Bogota reviewing their dispatch documents which contains all of the relevant information pertaining to our flight such as fuel, weather and our route. Once this document has been reviewed, we are taken over to the aircraft where the crew prepares the aircraft for departure. During this segment, viewers will have the opportunity to examine the new cockpit layout of the 737 MAX which closely resembles the cockpit of the 787.
In addition to getting a closer look at the cockpit, viewers will also be able to see the pilots at work as they setup the FMC and prepare the aircraft for departure.
 

After departing for Bogota, some of the highlights that I found quite intriguing on this round tip were the meticulous briefings and overall preparation for the landing in Bogota. This airport presents many challenges due to the fact that it is a high altitude airport, but the pilots did an outstanding job making this landing seem as effortless as any other. While heading back to Mexico, there were a few segments where deviations were necessary due to the weather, but ultimate it was a routine flight with a fantastic views from the cockpit while landing at Mexico City.

For our round trip to Monterrey, we start off with an introduction to a new Captain who has only flown the MAX8 3 times thus far. Though being a new aircraft, the Captain seems very comfortable with the aircraft and this is a good indication that Boeing’s cockpit design makes pilots feel right at home. Shortly after completing their pre-departure preparations, during the pushback the Captain enlightens the viewers on a significant difference between the 737 MAX and the NG. Since the MAX has bigger engines, a noteworthy difference is that the MAX engine startup process takes a bit longer than with the NG. While this may seem like an insignificant fact, knowing these differences can mean the difference between a proper engine start and having to explain to the chief pilot why you damaged one of the engines. Another interesting difference is that the landing gear level only has two positions rather than 3 as found on the NG. After departure, there were many other highlights worth mentioning. For example, while landing a Monterrey, the weather conditions were very poor and this prompted the pilots to do a go-around on final approach. After alerting the passengers of the reason for the missed approach, the weather conditions sufficiently improved to allow for a safe and legal landing. On our return to Mexico City, besides observing normal flying procedures, replays of the landing allows the viewers to enjoy the lovely view of Mexico City despite having slightly hazy weather conditions. Overall, this video presentation didn’t contain a cockpit presentation or a walkaround of the aircraft, but it did provide an enlightening look into the operation of one of the world’s newest aircraft types. AeroMexico and Just Planes have done an outstanding job and I would highly recommend this video to anyone who is eager to learn more about the 737 MAX.
