  2. Okay, Jean-Luc, this is really weird. If I start X-Plane normally the 750 will have a black screen. However, if I start X-Plane and click on "Run as Administrator" the 750 will start up normally. Does that make any sense? Thanks, Howard

    My guess is that you simply have to decrease the workload/complexity.. it does not matter which straw is breaking the camel's back.. just remove some load and things improve..
  4. A good test of performance in this area is to switch through the AI traffic. When one is selected further away from the user, there will be a little time while the view sharpens. Be sure to have overhead in the system so that the critical core is a little below 100%. The way the sim works is to maintain fps while the area around the viewer Is filled in - however long that takes. When the critical core is at 100% the background fill in performance is reduced. If the critical core is showing 100% it may be demanding anything, even 150 %, who knows?

    P3D multicore usage anomoly

    So reading into that, it should be evident that current hardware has walked along a trail of performance improvements that are at the leading edge of consumer technology. These increases in capacity have not so much been increases of capability. The design of code supports the hardware technique. As far as cost or complexity is concerned. I mean that these things are relative to current development techniques based on the available consumer hardware. Given the time for a team to move onto goals of performance stability, that would become the norm and be no more complex or expensive as the norm is currently.

I'm picking up next week a new desktop machine with the 9900k, MSI 2080, Z390, m.2 drives etc. When I finally get P3d rebuilt I'll try to remember to post how P3d performs.Interestingly the 9900k was within $100 +/- Cdn of the 8086, 8700, 9700. The 2080 was under $1000 Cdn. I got lucky with good pricing and jumped on pieces when I found a price i liked. Dave

    Also, some planes with FMS give you the ability to use your keyboard to type on them, and if you activate that feature, then normal keyboard functions won't work until you turn it off. That caught me out once on the QW787.

    Yoko+ PLUS yoke

    I wish it were that simple. You can't do ANYTHING well without having a reasonable computer, so to my mind that's a base level purchase - a necessity for entry into a quality simming experience. I make do with a cheaper yoke because it's hard to justify the huge jump in cost when balanced against other needs/wants, and what I want is very expensive indeed. I read Dudley Henriques' review with great interest when he first wrote it, as I've always felt the only feature which would make a next-level yoke worth it to me would be a high quality force-feedback setup like the Brunner, so that's what I've been holding out for. I admit I'm still skeptical that I'd be satisfied with anything less. As a RW GA pilot, I have some pretty strong opinions as to what would make a sim yoke feel "real". But his review was intriguing, as I certainly respect his level of knowledge and experience. If anyone hasn't read it yet, do yourself a favor and do so. Scott
  14. I'm a big fan of Megascenery V3 and have about 450 gigs worth. Totally transforming, immersive - for me. Plus now their downloading and installation procedure is painless and easy - a big improvement. Dave

    Are FSX and P3D becomng step children?

    I have both P3DV4.4 and Xplane11, for me they go hand in hand, because if one sim does not have the aircraft I want, the other does. But as I use both sims I honestly see Xplane11 surpassing P3D4.4 in so many ways. It is way ahead in autogen, landclass, and mesh, but lags behind in airport detail and just a tad in aircraft support. But the game is changing. It used to be argued that Xplane11 just could not duplicate the flight fidelity of the MSFS/P3D series. But Austin revealed details of how aerodynamics and blade theory worked that had been overlooked by add-on developers, so they gave it a try. And I have to say, Xplane11 can capture a greater amount of the flight envelope vs. P3D, especially in the neglected rotorcraft area which I have learned to enjoy. Even autogyros well written by VSkylabs work like the real thing, I know because I am well read and have talked to autogyro pilots and have seen them fly in airshows. Powered Parachutes and Blimps are modeled well in Xplane11, there is even a Ramjet aircraft that will go into orbit if you manage the climbout well, quite amazing. There was a movie in my time called "The Mouse that Roared" a great comedy about a tiny country that declared war in a friendly way on the US. Austin has accomplished that with Xplane11. I dissed Xplane10, it had issues and out of memory errors galore. But with my specs, Xplane11 looks better and feels more real, like the real flying I have done and I am still learning, vs. P3D. No doubt though, I have full confidence P3D will also answer back and stay step in step with Xplane11. AeroflyFS2 will be a close third. The competition is good, and none of these three sims, in my opinion, will die, because they heed their customers and take us seriously as students of aviation. So no fears, no worries I say. John

    Almost ready : REX announcing Environment Force

    Actually, it is still operating within the limitations of the sprite-based (stacked billboards) cloud model paradigm. To implement cloud animations, the clouds would have to be based instead on 3D effects which would create major performance issues. It is possible to do so in P3d just like it is possible to have 3D vegetation models. The developers of XEnviro keep promising to release a new version (1.10) of their add-on for XP11 that has 3D clouds, but so far they haven't delivered. Active Sky adds a 3D in-cloud effect to reduce the "screen door" issue while flying through the sprite-based clouds.
  17. My setup is perfectly fine. The airplane does not reflect at night time as they do in xplane or in real life. They just don't. The airplanes reflect the dynamic lights from the terminals as the same way it reflects the sun during the day time. Nothing else reflects. At dawn and dusk, the airplanes with certain materials start to glow burning orange. PMDG 747 leading edges and nacelles are a perfect example. The pbr implementation has a lot of potential. No matter how perfect the textures are, there will always be a time of day that it will look like word not allowed.

    We are talking about a technology that, by its nature, is designed to extract what is feasible, and infeasible, at the leading edge of power availability. The design goals so far have not been to intervene in the way ultra high definition is absorbed and any kind of dll code interjected with the simulator. Instead it is more leaning toward a kind of test rig where we get back what we put in and discover the limits for ourselves. To play with limiting requires a more sophisticated backend to deliver part details as and when it is desired to maintain desired performance. Some of these techniques are already in place with tessellation and replication. The move to DX12 and Vulcan also improves in this area slightly to provide more granularity to pipelines. So it is coming but we lead at the edge of power and prefer to push the boundary and leave limited fields of view to the consoles whereby they can look into a mist up the road to maintain performance.

    ANP Bar Limits

    Hi all, 737 Ng PFD scales would flash for 10 seconds if deviation is within ANP bar limits for 10 continuous seconds. I could not see the same result in Prepar3D. Has anyone tried the same and could see the amber flash ? Just cruiosity 🙂 Best Regards Kerim Kurtulmus

    I think ORBX is just expanding their market- which makes sense. Just looking at facebook groups and Youtube videos, view counts or membership size shows that X-plane reaches more people than P3D. There's a lot of money to be made by developing for both platforms, but I don't think that they are sacrificing one over the other. I just wish ORBX would focus on more landclass/regions like Asia (which they've been promising for years) and Africa.

    I have Xplane11 and P3DV4.4 In P3DV4.4 IAS hold works flawlessly and I just love the way it uses pitch to maintain IAS during cruise climb. But in Xplane11 it just bleeds off airspeed and I have to disengage the autopilot, engage VS hold, and yet VS hold still does not capture my assigned altitude, unlike P3DV4.4 I have opened a support ticket with Carenado. I bought the C550 so I could integrate RealityXP with it, which I just love, way cool, a worthy purchase, even though it only has US airports in its Database. I want the C550 in Xplane11 to work exactly like it does in P3DV4.4, I use both sims extensively depending on what photoscenery I am flying over. Has anyone else tried the C550 in Xplane11? Could RealityXP be causing problems? I would not think so, since that is gps/destination oriented, not altitude oriented. John
