  1. Thanks, guys! Regarding the cross-platform deal, it's for previous owners of the P3D version who might not otherwise be tempted to buy the X-Plane version. We wanted to tempt them over to see what they might be missing. To be honest, this whole cross-platform thing is getting pretty tangled and difficult to maintain though, so if you've already got the P3D version of Nantucket, go for it. For everyone else, we'll think of some way to reward loyal customers but it might not be with free cross-grades. I never anticipated all the wrinkles and permutations of deals like this. thanks, Bill
  2. Keven, I'm having an issue with TrackIR as well - not sure if it's the same one, but I believe so. I've removed my simconnect files from TIR and enabled TIR in my internal camera. When CP starts, it has the "+ TIR" message in the upper left, but the green light on the TrackIR unit that usually denotes a TIR-enabled game doesn't come on, and I'm not getting any head movement in the sim. I've followed the instructions in this thread, but I'm not having any luck. Is there anything else I should be doing? Bill

  5. Damn, Tom, this is just awful news. I don't know what the right words are in a situation like this. I'm glad we got to meet on several occasions. I still remember the various Avsim conferences as some of the most fun I've had in 'simming. You've built a truly impressive entity with Avsim, and I hope it's some consolation that it will continue after you've left us - it's quite a legacy. I wish you the best of luck, peace, and comfort as you finish your journey, no matter how long it takes. Bravo Zulu! Bill

  7. Since the banners on the P3D website proudly feature Carenado aircraft, I think it's safe to assume that at least some of them work.
  8. It pains me to say it, but FTX Global is probably one of your best $100 investments.
  9. Don't feel bad, and don't feel as if everyone else is having a grade-A experience straight out of the gate. It's been a couple days since I installed P3D, and I'm finally getting it to run pretty well. When I first ran it, I got the black screen, long load times, sporadically poor performance, the works. Upgrading my video drivers helped, as did following the instructions above. There also seems to be a "breaking in" period with complex software like this; it's almost organic. All I can say is that after a few days of minor tweaking, it got much better, and I expect it to get better still as I dial it in to my preferences. Stick with it!
  10. As a developer, I sure hope there aren't too many people who are holding off on purchases. I'm happy to make P3D update patches for my stuff if required, but no sales means I might not be around by then.

  12. I'll start by saying I always considered myself a friend of Avsim. I've attended and enjoyed several conferences, including making presentations. I've sat in on beer-n-bull sessions with Tom and the staff. I have been a contributor on the forums. Files from my 11-year history as an FS developer can be found in the library here. So when I decided to break away from a certain southern hemisphere developer and start my own scenery brand, one of the first news outlets I targeted with my press release was, of course, this one. Look, I know that certain people I've been associated with in the past have ruffled some feathers here. As near as I can recall, however, I've never had or made any trouble with the Avsim staff. So you can imagine my confusion when my big announcement never made it to the front page. A new venture from veteran developer who has put in hours of freeware and tutorials, not to mention working with nearly every major FS publisher, isn't relevant news? It's a little confounding.
  13. The last time I checked, buying FSX Gold Edition (FSX + Acceleration) was the cheapest way to get up-to-date. As I recall, the Acceleration disc is separate from the main FSX installers, so you could buy Gold and just install Acc.
  14. As it happens, I just picked up a QNIX 2710 monitor from Amazon. The specs drew me in, but the price sealed the deal (less than $300 US). Yes, the controls are minimal, and yes the manual is in Korean only. But gents, the monitor is astounding. No dead pixels that I've been able to discern, and when properly calibrated the color is gorgeous. I use it for development, but I definitely need to try FSX on it soon. This may be apropos of nothing, but I saw someone mention QNIX and had to share.
  15. Oh yes, a projector is a fantastic bit of hardware for FS! Mine is packed away at the moment due to space constraints, but when my house renovations are complete I definitely plan on setting it up again.
  16. I only know a few besides myself, and only a small percentage of them are able to make a living solely from FS design. I spend most of my days doing web design and development while trying to scratch out an hour or two a day for FS modeling. It's an uphill struggle sometimes. Several times, I've considered devoting myself full-time to FS work, but the income from it is so random; some projects surprised me with how popular they were, while others that I thought would be a big hit just fizzled. Still, I love doing it so much that I keep trying to find a way.
  17. I just had my first few minutes in it last night, and it left me wanting more. More time to fly it, that is. Alabeo seems to have taken Carenado's old mission of re-creating grotty old trainers and run with it.

  19. One difference between stock FSX and FTX Global is the density of the autogen. If you're having a lot of performance issues after installing FTXG, try tweaking your autogen density sliders and see if that helps.
  20. I used to curse road traffic in the first year or so of FSX. Maybe it was due to upgrading my PC several times (doubtless, in fact...) but I never notice much of a performance hit anymore. I only run my road traffic at around 15-20%, but that's plenty for the effect, and it no longer brings my rig to its knees.
  21. They're saying 8GB or so, but it's best if you have 10GB free on your FSX drive.
  22. I have no idea how simple replacement ground textures would be incompatible with DX10. If they worked for the default, they should work for FTXG. Then again, I have nothing to do with this product other than as a customer, so maybe something went haywire...
  23. Very cool! I can't speak for anyone else, but using Chrome and the built-in translation feature, I can read it just fine as it is. No need to worry about adding English.
