I also would recommend the T-37 referenced above. The manual alone is worth the price of admission. The systems modelling is complete, and it flies great.Best,Ken

Hi Ohioguy,All of RealAir's addons are first-rate, and the Scout is no exception. Since it has tandem seating, you have virtually unobstructed visibility through more than 180 degrees. It comes in both wheeled and amphibious versions, each with its own custom flight model. Bill Womack's Bear Gulch scenery, while not on the grand scale of Misty Fjords, is very nicely done. The panel looks great, and all systems are modeled. The documentation is complete and error-free... it has a "how to" section and a Pilot's Operating Handbook. Finally, you can't go wrong when Rob Young did the flight modeling. If you've never flown one of his creations, you're in for a real treat! If you've done all your flying in heavies with a tricycle landing gear, RealAir's Scout is a great introduction to the wonderful and fascinating world of taildraggers!Ken

Todd,What toprob said above for the T-6. Here's a forthcoming Stearman:http://www.daviator.com/stearman.htmI don't know when it will be available... the announcement has been up for a while. While you're waiting, you might want to check out Bill Lyons' Travel Air. It looks great, flies like a dream, and comes in multiple versions. The "Magic One" variety is somewhat similar to the Stearman:http://www.windrfters.com/And while you're waiting for the T-6, you might want to try out Rick Piper's Chipmunk available here in the AVSIM library:http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=51777http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=52043Ken

Marcus' video is beautifully done. Here's the link:http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=61135Ken

Simulator flight modelling has improved tremendously over the last few years. For the first time ever, it's possible to get a great simulation of almost any type of aircraft you want (with some exceptions... I think current seaplane and helicopter flight modelling leaves a lot of room for improvement). With all that's available, it's difficult to choose, but my current favorites - the planes that keep me wide-eyed in amazement - are:RealAir's Spitfire, Scout, Decathlon, and SF-260MAAM's B-25 and R4DDreamfleet's B727Bill Lyons' Travel Air and Tiger MothIt's a great time to be flight-simming. I remember enjoying the experience of flying a stick-framed C182 on a Macintosh SE with a 7 inch black and white screen and keyboard flight controls. Believe it or not... it really did help me with my real world flight training, but as far as flight modelling went, suffice to say that there was no point in attempting a flare. So starting up MAAM's B-25, rotating to takeoff attitude early in the ground roll and then waiting as it accelerates to liftoff speed is almost a religious experience for me. To say nothing of cruising over 38m mesh with FScene textures, through an Active Sky weatherscape, and sideslipping into a crosswind landing at an airport filled with AI traffic. It just blows my mind!Ken

Caveman,Do you have the Bremerton addon scenery installed? Try disabling it in the Scenery menu, restart, and fly the pattern again.Ken

I think that the FS-GS "advertisements" that come out periodically are simply satisfied customers who are (perhaps overzealously) desirous of sharing the news of a pleasant experience. I used this service about a year ago. Michael Greenblatt is very good at what he does, and I can say from personal experience that he treats his customers well. Using FS-GS is a lot like having a computer guru friend come over and spend an evening tweaking your system for you, and that's the way Michael comes across when you're working with him. What he does is reconfigure your computer so that when you're simming, you're using only the services required by MS Flight Simulator. When you're not simming, and after a restart, you can do anything with your computer that you would have been able to do before. In other words, you have the best of both worlds. More importantly, on the sim side he changes settings both in the computer system and in the sim itself to further improve performance. Some of the changes were things I might have played with on my own, and some were in places I would never have known to look (and would not have known what to do with even if I had known to look there).During our session, he answered my questions about tweaks that I had read about. Some, he told me, were good ideas and others were not (and he explained why). He also shared his informed opinions on various add-ons and software. In the end, as others have already said, the sim did indeed run more smoothly, and it looked better. Some recurring questions, and my attempts to answer:Q: Does the service help with any other games besides MSFS?A: My experience here is limited since, if it doesn't fly, I don't play it, but I can run IL-2 in any of its various incarnations without any problems. The service is most definitely focused on MSFS.Q: Can you recreate the improvements in the event of a computer crash?A: Michael gave me time to make notes for my own use, but even so... if I ever suffer a meltdown, I'll need (and want) help to get it back to its present state.Q: Do the system improvements preclude the use of add-on apps?A: I run MSFS with Active Sky, FSNav, FS Sky World, FSGenesis Terrain Mesh, Ruud Faber's FScene, OceanFX, and GeoRender sceneries. I also fly several complex add-on airplanes by Dreamfleet (including their new 727), RealAir (including the Spit), MAAM, and Project Sierra Hotel's T-37. I haven't had a problem with any of them, and I've never had a system crash.Michael, if you're reading this and I've misrepresented anything, please feel free to correct me.Best Regards,KenP.S. If you really want to get a good fight going, how about these topics:1. Who has the best pilots... Air Force or Navy? I say Air Force.2. Who has the best football team... USC, Auburn, or Oklahoma? I say Oklaho... Oh wait, my beloved Sooners were stomped on, chewed up, spit out, and left for roadkill by the Trojans a couple of weeks ago, and now everyone says that Auburn should have been in the championship game instead of Oklahoma, so this question doesn't count.3. Who makes the best Boeing sim? Nah... even I'm smart enough to stay out of that argument. :)

Tom,In the AVSIM Library, search using the keyword "Tomkiewicz" plus "BAe", "Learjet", "Citation", "Beechjet", or "Gulfstream" (without the quotes).Henry Tomkiewicz makes beautiful AI airplanes with low polygon counts, so you get great looking AI with almost no impact on framerates.Best regards,Ken

Blue,Here's something to try. It might be an artifact from a flight using another add-on airplane. Try starting the default MSFS flight (the one with the default C172 at Seattle). Then switch to the B-25 and see if you still have the problem. If not, just change locations to where you want to be and you're set.Ken

Thanks Bill!No problems on installation. Like you said, it doesn't affect any of the other models. If, like me, any others were contemplating creating a Mark Beaumont IFR version, it turns out that it's very simple. Since the BPB panel aliases the base passenger model, you can make a copy of the BPB version, then change the panel.cfg to alias to any other version which already has the mod installed.Congratulations on another great enhancement!Ken
-
Jan, Mark et al,I just downloaded the new BPB C-47A and read of the improvements you made to the base model... good job! Were the R4D, DC-3 passenger, and DC-3 cargo mdl files updated, and are the changes all contained within the mdl files? (Or... is this a completely new model, and it's the only one affected?)I have made additional passenger and cargo aircraft (each in their own folders) using Mark Beaumont's unsanctioned (but very nice) IFR panels. I assume that all I have to do to update those aircraft is to copy the mdl file from the base versions... correct? Thanks for the great work!Ken

1. Make sure you don't have Autorudder enabled in the Realism settings.2. I'm not on my home computer to check, but I think you need to check the "Reverse Axes" box for the rudder pedals to work right.Best,Ken

Balooba,It sounds like you're going to get your wish. Check this out, particularly the last few posts in the thread:http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...29010&mode=fullRegards,Ken

Hi Clay,I always enjoy reading your posts... a real class act. FYI, there are already two AA repaints to choose from in the AVSIM library. I think they were both posted yesterday. Plus, according to the Dreamfleet forums, there's a beautiful early AA Astrojet rendition forthcoming! So enjoy!Ken

Hi Rattle,Just downloaded! I really enjoyed all the repaints you did for the B-25, so I'm certainly looking forward to more C-47's!Best Regards,Ken

Hi Steve,I had no trouble getting into the forum, so I posted a message there referring to this thread.Best,Ken

Chris,If you're comfortable working with AI flight plans and Traffic Tools, go to http://www.retroai.net/They have already set up the historic routes for Eastern AI (and a lot of other airlines as well), so if you open the flight plans, you can get the routes.(And if you download the Eastern 727-200 from Aardvark's site and assign it to the flight plan, you'll find a bunch of buddies waiting for you at the airports.)Best,Ken

Hi Zane,Thanks for the heads-up!Ken

You might want to try the freeware Dassault Falcon 50 by Yannick Lavigne, Fred Banting, and Rob Young. It was modelled for FS2002, but flies great in FS2004, and it has a really nice virtual cockpit. The links below are for the first release and two patches:http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=13762http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=13800http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=14395Best Regards,Ken

David,I agree! Bill Lyons' packages are a terrific bargain (and addictive... once you get one, you've just gotta have more!). High quality airplanes that fly great, and gorgeous scenery. If you want a look at his current project, check out his forum:http://members5.boardhost.com/golden/Best Regards,Ken

Hi J.J.,Bill Lyons is one of the nicest (and it goes without saying, honest) people you will ever meet. I've purchased every one of his addons, and I haven't had a problem yet. And he's prompt... If you send in an order on a typical weekday, you should receive a reply from him almost immediately. So it's obvious he hasn't received your order. Similarly, I've never had a problem with PayPal.Here's a shot in the dark: Bill has had problems with emails coming from AOL accounts. So many problems in fact, that he won't accept orders from AOL email addresses. If yours is one of them, you might try using an alternate email address. In any case, the quickest way to resolve your problem is to post a message in his forum:http://members5.boardhost.com/golden/Best Regards,Ken

I tried a few hammerheads last night... Hah! What a great way to discover the limits of your piloting skills. The coordination required in keeping the wing in the right place, hitting the right airspeed, and cross controlling as you go over the top is a real (ahem) challenge. This is gonna take some practice!Ken
-
Dudley,Thanks for all the time you've put in on this. Not only does it add to the fun and appreciation for the capabilities of the airplane and RealAir's simulation, but it's fascinating to find out what real world airshow performers are going through up there.I once saw a pilot (wish I could remember who it was) do a complete 360 degree turn, while simulaneously doing slow rolls all the way around the turn. Amazingly complex, and very odd to watch!Best Regards,Ken
-
Rob,It's out and I just read it. Suffice to say that I anticipate a long learning curve and many botched attempts before my hammerhead and slow roll are ready for Broadway!Ken
C-310 by Dreamfleet...."Crabbed View"?
in MS FSX | FSX-SE Forum
Posted
Hi Stan,It's a nice airplane, isn't it?The view isn't crabbed, but it can give you that impression when you first start flying it because of the instrument layout. If you go into the VC and pan down, you'll see that you're sitting right behind the yoke. Draw an imaginary vertical line up from the yoke, and where it intersects the top of the panel is your center of view... it's off center from the attitude indicator. Once you know where your center of view is, you'll have no troubles taking off, landing, and tracking VFR.Ken
