  1. Hi fppilot,

I will try FSGRW again. What I did not find that realistic with FSGRW were the thin stratus layers which were generated much too often, even in heavy rain. Towering cumulonimbis in the METAR are in FSGRW always producing flashing lights and thunder. In the real world this is not always the case. FSGRW has some sliders for the weather radius, visibility etc. You will find it under Tools (menubar).

  2. Hi,

I just read your post and as not being a troll I can try to explain my point.

I am a simmer since FS4.  And since the first commercial weather addons were published, I bought them all. FSMeteo, all the HiFi produkts from the beginning,  FSGRW, OpusFSX, ASN and OpusFSI.

The weather part in flight simulation is important to me. And I know that some people will not agree with me but when I am looking out of my window not far from Bern Airport (LSZB) I would like  to see the same cloud scape and weather front from the west in FSX as in real life. OpusFSI is most of the time spot on. The others are not. Also compared with weathercams, which are available from all over the world, is allways in favour of OpusFSI. And the real world weather does not change that dramaticaly within one hour METAR difference that it decides about overcast or CAVOK. I like weather addons which are programmed in such a way that the influence of wind and turbulence are as it would be in the real world. I don't want to have sliders which let's me decide if I want up an down winds between 0 or 5000 ft/mn. That's nice for a weather games!.

The developers of OPUS are real world pilots, they spent every spare minute in the air. Therefore, to me,  they have a high credibility what weather simulation concerns.

Then the dll: I have made the experience that the dll of ASN has a negative impact on the fidility of the other weather addons, they are not functioning properly. Stephen (one of the OPUS developers) explained on Simforums.com why. You may search for it if you like. But in the meantime  I don't think it is all too fair towards the other competitors. And I thought that  it should be well known that this dll consumes a sometimes critical mass of VAS, it has been discussed on the Internet several times.

I know that ASN has a lot of fans and that's fine fore them and for Damian. I felt the urge of lobbying a bit for OPUS as a lot of people seem to think ASN is the holy weather grail, not aware of, or ignoring some negative characteristics of ASN.

    Kind regards, Hans

  3. If you are interested in a WEATHER engine which depicts the real weather situation at a certain moment and place, it is OpusFSI. ASN gives you nice cloudscapes and other features which are nothing more than belonging to a kind of weather game. The bigger problem: it puts a dreadfull dll in your flightsim directory which eats a lot of VAS but offers a nice (fake)radar echo on the ND in your PMDG products. In the meantime you will hardly be able to complete a long PMDG flight because of the VAS consumption. Then, if you have ASN installed, but would like to try out another payware weather programm, you will be unable to try the virtues of the competitors because this dll blocks their fidility. It would be fair if the ASN guys would have named this dll : BoycottCompetitors.dll . I have bought an tried all the HiFi simulation products but my conclusion, as a meteorology freak, was always: it's a pity, Damian never gets it right.......sorry!

  5. A couple of weeks ago, after a flight, the captain was so kind to let me sit in the captain's seat of a Boeing 737-700 NG. With WideViewAspect=true, TrackIR, and a zoom setting in the VC of 0.9 (Monitor 1920x1200) I get exactly the view as in the real plane. In real life it is extremely small and narrow on a flightdeck. Therefore 0.5 etc. is highly unrealistic!

  6. Ses,

what you are describing sounds nice.  I use OPUS and tried the trial version of ASN and I think it depends what you are expecting from  weather simulation software.

To me, flying around in FSX, is a kind of mental travelling. When I look at the cloudscape in the sim, for instance in San Fransisco, I want to see the same cloudscape as someone who lives in SF and who looks at the same moment to the real sky. I compared the cloud depiction of both programms with weathercams which you can find all over the internet. OPUS was always spot on, absolutely amazing. ASN hardly ever! When I get turbulence, I want to experience the amount of turbulence I would get as a rw-pilot at that moment at that place and not a kind of at random heavy shaking. I trust OPUS a bit more and tend to believe that OPUS ist more about depiction of the real atmosphere. ASN might be more about aesthetics and fun.

  7. I bought FS GlobalRW a couple of days ago. This afternoon I tried the weatherdepiction, especially the cloudscapes generated by FSGRW and Opus and I compared them with weathercams for the same place. Opus was always spot on, like I would be there. FSGRW generated f.i. broken clouds where it should be clear and light stratuslayers where the weathercam showed a thick overcast and heavy rain. I was a bit disappointed, I think for the moment Opus is my favourite.

  8. I don't mind giving support 24 hours a day, and some times we nearly manage that. But it is still a proclamation not a question. Please, please as questions before publicly airing your assertions.

OK I was a little snappy and regret my statement, I apologIse to you all, sometimes those statements are like a red rag to a bull.

normally I am only a reading participant of this forum, but now I really must must say something. THERE IS NO NEED TO APOLOGISE!! The Opus weather programm is the best there is. I am simulating since FS4 and dreamed ever since about a realistic weather environment. With Opus this dream came through, amazing!

Now, if someone, obviously ignoring his stupidity, is shouting out on the internet that Opus is not offering METAR's for Europe, you have the right to defend your programm (and yourself). The words you chose are completely allright, allso towards a "paying customer". The paying customer is not the king nor the emperor and cannot afford himself anything he likes. I am running a clinic for physio- and manualtherapy. I have a lot of "paying customers" to treat. But if some of them is not respectfull or bad mannered towards me, I send them away with the message of never coming back again.

Please, can we stop forcing hard working developers to be slave for the holy paying customer.

  9. I have to say something in favour of the Saitek yoke. I stopped using the CH-yoke because of calibration items, unusable after only a couple of years. Now I have got the Saitek Cessna yoke and I am extremely happy. First of all you can turn 90° to the left and right, like RW. You get a seperate throttle device so you don't have a mess with your right hand, controlling power, and the yoke which should turn to the left. And I love the detent. From a RW trial-flight in a Piper Archer I remember handling the yoke very well and the detent simulates the forces against airflow and the stability of a well trimmed airplane very good. Flying a heavy down the glideslope is, with proper pitch and powersetting, rockstable now and reminds me of a DC-10 captain who once said: landing a DC-10 is so easy, it's a shame we are getting payed for it.Hans

  10. Anyone else try this 'possible' tweak?Others have tried it and said that their visuals have improved and their blurries were greatly reduced. While others say they didn't see or notice any change.Just wondering.ThanksPaul.
Hi, strange that I had never heard about this twaek, but I have tried it and on my machine it is a real and signifikant improvement. I am very happy with the results and, as a being sceptic towards tweaks, this one is definitively no placebo. It was obviously the last tweak I needed for being completely happy: the terrain around me doesn't show blurred patches anymore as usual. The terrain engine is switching much faster to a higher mip level and for instance, the roads of Ultimate Terrain are now sharp along their way to the horizon. My sim looks now as crisp and sharp like the famous screen shots by FengZ, beautiful. Thanks a lot! Hans W.

  11. Hi,It should not be write protected.
Hi, no way to disable write protected. The wxstationlist.bin as well as the fs9.cfg file are in the write protected FS9 folder, but I can modify the FS9.cfgwithout any problem. So not read only? I wanted to reinstall AS6.5, but only found the key, the originally bought and downloaded file is lost. I am afraid the AS weather game is over. A pity, than AS6.5 was simply the best of all the external weatherprogramms I bought so far.Thank you, Hans

  12. Hi,See if your App Data folder is still marked Read and Write Enabled.
Hi, sorry that I needed some time to answer, but during the day there is hardly any spare time. Well, I am afraid that I, with a dutch and german tongue, are not so sure what you mean, but lets try: when I rightclick on the C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Etc....\FS9, and look under properties, the FS9 folder ist "write protected", the wxstationlist in the FS9 folder is "archiv". ?? Is this what you would like to know? Thanks, and regards, hans

  13. Hi all,All of a sudden I cannot start AS6.5 in FS2004. I get the failure-message "Error Initializing-Check your INI file". Wenn I click on OK, I get a new window, saying:Error during FS station database check (Step7): C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Hans Wijnroks\Anwendungsdaten\Microsoft\FS9\wxstationlist.BIN-NO FSX-Stations may not be properly configured for extended-coverage weather. What is going on. How could I eventually cure it?Regards, Hans

  14. Hi, it's repaired. Everything works again as it should. If I only knew why. I played around a lot after all the suggestions: unplugged devices, rebooted, deleting CH manager, deleting FSUIPC.cfg and at last I opened the windows gamecontroller, clicked on advanced and choose the resp. devices to be used with "older software" (my translation from german). After that I had to reassign the pedal axis in FS and then everything was fine again. Which of all these parameters did the trick?? A bit mysterious if you ask me.At least I am happy again. Thank you all for your feedback.Regards, Hans

  15. Thank you for your suggestions. Both left brake and aileron are attached to the X-axis (brake reversed), but I don't see any way to change this double use.Of course I played around with other USB ports on my computer and went back to the port where they originally were, but it didn't change anything.Calibrating with FSUIPC is no cure either, or did you mean to use the axis assignement of FSUIPC? My question is also if the problem is hardware (CH) related, or is it on the software side (Windows XP), In the last case, buying new hardware (Saitek) could confront me with the same problems.Regards, Hans
