  1. Hi Fisheye,

Thanks for your explanation. You may be able to add a little more for me regarding what I need to know though. I will try to explain it as best I can.

I'm an IT tech, so as far as I know, I've got my somewhat limited PC tweaked pretty good for FSX. What I do know is that some people set up individual profiles for IFR and for VFR. My original question that Capt Speirs answered was related to me hangaring the aircraft I usually use for VFR, when I'm flying IFR, and whether I can also hangar repaints that I'm not using.

The application looks good to me in the sense that I can disable scenery very quickly that I'm not using. If this is the case, it SHOULD in theory affect the performance of FSX for the better. But yes, I will contact the vendor, but it is also nice to hear others views of a product.

    Many thanks once again,

    Andrew.

  2. So,

I watched the video about SIMStarter, and if my interpretation is correct, you can set up multiple profiles for FSX to suit either VFR or IFR type flights, I understand that. As well as this, you can "hangar" aircraft that you may not necessarily use for a type of flight. So in VFR, I could hangar my BaE146 and all variations to improve performance, is this correct?

Also, if I fly from say, England to Germany, I can also exclude scenery such as Scandinavia, to once again improve performance?

Please advise if this is the case, and I will probably download today.

    Thanks again,

    Andrew.

  3. I think what would really add to the sim as well is some additional payware mission sets, but ones that contain many variations, and you do not have to fly them for too long a time (Which was one of Dougals original points - the free time he has available to him).

When M$ made the original missions in FSX and acceleration for example, I found a lot of the aircraft types inappropriate for given mission. For example, after working for Bristow, I find it very unlikely that anybody would attempt to conduct SAR in a Jetranger.

    Interesting post guys. :-)

  4. To add to my last:

I forgot to say, prior to any reinstall that I do, I spend some serious time thinking about which add ons I am going to install next. And I am always realistic about it in regards to the limited power of my current PC. I strongly disagree with Pilottj; I never find my regional flights boring, no matter how it may sound.

Currently I have five aircraft and two helos installed, and lots of high quality scenery for Europe, and I'm using 69.9GB of my current 128Gb SSD.

Last week I also purchased and installed Aerosoft night texture for UK. This has been a game changer for me. I've put some comments and some screenshots in the appropriate forums here at Avsim. Just because I keep my FSX realistic does not mean that I make it boring or repetitive. I refuse to install military jets, as I can do nothing with them, and besides which I cannot get adequate frames for high speed operations. Although at one stage in the past I had the Skysim Hawk installed, and I flew the entire RAF Nav syllabus.

To finalize, I also found out a couple of weeks ago that Just Flight are going to release a payware version of the Socata TB20. This is what I've been waiting for. Most of my real time flying was logged in this model of aircraft, and it is well worthy of a good DX10 representation in FSX.

Guess I take my FSX a little seriously because of the realization that now, at 48 with a wife and three daughters, I probably won't get the opportunity to fly the real thing any more.

  5. I too experienced this problem up until a few months ago, when I made a concerted effort to think about exactly how I wanted to run FSX (This time). Essentially, I put a few factors together, those being:

    1. The actual amount of free time that I have to sim.

    2. The aircraft that I like.

    3. Routes that would fit into my allotted sim time.

    4. Global areas that I know.

As a result of this, currently my sim is set up to basically do regional flights up to a maximum duration of about three hours. Being English, at the moment I am flying mostly European routes using the BaE146 and RJ, and the 737NG series. This keeps me interested because these are the places that I know. Also, it is NOT a placebo, removing global areas that you are not flying in does have a positive effect on the sim.

SO, what invariably happens for me, is about every six months or so, I uninstall the sim, reinstall, add new scenery and aircraft, and on I go. Thus far, using this method I have done:

    1. Airliners in Australia (where I live now) usually reflective of the types that are flown here.

    2. GA in Australia (I once held my CPL, so I'm very familiar with the territory)

    3. GA in the UK / Europe.

    4. Regionals in Europe (Including the USSR).

    5. GA in Alaska.

In future, I will be switching again to North America and Canada, although I have to admit that I do not have a great knowledge of the regions. I will study up on this. After that, once we get some decent global sceneries for South East Asia, I will do that as well.

At the moment, there is only one problem that this gives me, and that is the actual install and set up time of FSX and acceleration when I do this. I invariably end up removing all of the FSX missions, and all default aircraft and panels, and installing the best payware ones that I choose at that time. All of my payware is on seperate drives.

It's a shame that nobody can create a new custom installer for FSX, so that I did not have to spend time doing this post install.

I find that this method always keeps my interest in the sim going. Apologies for the long post.

  6. fakeflyer737;

I did not think that there was too much of a performance hit at all. My frames seemed to drop around London City airport and heading out to Heathrow (but I was expecting this). External views dropped to around 15fps, but I'm only running an i5 3770k, 8Gb RAM and a GTX660 video card.

This is at 1920x1080 resolution as well. All other areas around the UK were between 27-30 fps in DX10 mode.

  7. Just had to post this:

Night Environment UK has totally transformed my sim. This is a screenshot of the Carenado Cessna 337 coming in to land at my old home airport (Southend, UK). Still cannot believe how good this is. Was also able to visually navigate there at night. I would recommend this package to anybody who is serious about night flying.

  8. Hi Chris,

Last night my purchase of UK lights was approved, and I downloaded, installed, and tested today. All I can say is that you have completely transformed FSX for me. Installation was a breeze, I had only a minor slowdown on my fairly midrange computer, but the difference in night flying just has to be seen.

Unfortunately for me, I have not been able to fly for about seven years due to family, kids etc, so my FSX has to suffice. Today I flew a short UK flight from Lydd to Southend in a Cessna 337. I was so impressed with the lights I forgot to retract flaps until I reached 4,000 feet! LOL.

I was made redundant last year, but as soon as I'm back in the workforce, I will be buying every one of your packages for Europe, no doubt. And to put the icing on the cake for me, yesterday I found out that Justflight are making a Socata TB20 (my real world favourite single). Looking forward to what may be coming next.

Thanks for all of your hard work; I know that an undertaking such as this cannot be easy at all. Please know that your work is well appreciated.

    Thanks once again,

    Andrew.

  9. Hi Chris,

Last week I downloaded the Berlin lights demo, and was completely blown away by how much this transformed my sim, but I have a quick question or two please.

Currently, I am running the ORBX night lighting (I found that the demo integrated with this fine) but since I have used ORBX lights with ORBX Global, I've noticed that the lights seem to "dissapear" at around 4,000 ft agl or so. I did not notice this with the Berlin demo, however when I flew a 737 test flight out of Tegel, I think at one stage the lights area seemed to come to an end, as it was pitch black outside the cockpit.

Can you confirm that this may be the case please, that I may have reached the geographical limits of the demo?

Also, at what kind of altitudes should I expect that the lights would no longer be visible?

Lastly, would it be viable to add what I call "horizon lighting" to the product? What I mean is in real life, several times when I have flown front seat at night, you may be able to see a faint line of lights at a major city at perhaps 100klms away. That would be awesome in FSX.

I've already put in my order for UK lights, pretty sure I will be buying the rest of Europe too. Thanks for all of your hard work on this.

    Andrew.

  10. Hi Steve,

This is a question that I guess is aimed more at the community for help, but can anybody advise me of the best REX4 Texture Direct water textures to use with DX10 please?

The fixer is an awesome piece of work (thanks once again) and I have been trying to set up good water colours for England and Europe, it's just that most of the selections thus far have been very dark blue (too dark in fact). So, is anybody in the community able to advise me of a "greener" shade that I can set for the water, that would suit the Englsi channel?

Once again, thanks in advance for any and all advice.

    AJ.

  11. Interesting thread, which I have been following with some interest.

I'm very interested in buying the Zinertek product, but it will mean a resinstall for me. Every few months I basically start again; removing FSX and reinstalling based upon where I want to fly. At the moment, I do not have a lot of time to fly, so I am mostly doing short hop regional flying out of the U.K. I do this because I know the airports.

One thing I have noticed (and this is NOT a placebo) is that if I disable all other scenery areas in FSX (eg: North America) I definately get back frames, there is no doubt at all. No disrespect to ORBX, but I basically trashed my setup last week by installing ORBX regions and airports, my frames have taken a nose dive. :-(

When I next do my system, I will probably do barebones FSX, FTX Global, Zinertek and REX4 TD. This was how it used to be. I am getting some stunning eye candy at the moment, but at the expense of reasonable frame rates. It's true as others have stated here about the amount of detail in some products, and I'm sure that when I do my next upgrade, it will be able to handle everything.

Now to work out where to fly next.......

  12. Ah, OK, thanks for the heads up. :-)

Actually, it doesn't really bother me too much; when I saw it I was just whaaaat?....lol. And yes, come to think of it, those do look like FTX water textures, although I would have thought that REX4 would have overwritten.

    Thanks again for your help.

    AJ.

  13. Hi community,

After doing a number of flights, I have found a very weird effect in my sim water. Essentially in some areas, the water appears to be 'split' into different colours, but with very straight lines. I'm running REX4 TD in DX10 mode, but it seems that only the water is affected.

Aside from that, I'm also running FTX England, but I would not think that FTX textures could overwrite texture selections in REX4? And why on earth are the lines straight?

    Has anybody seen this before?

    Thanks,

    AJ.

  14. Thanks for everybody's advice, great as usual.

Seems to me that to get the best results, I should reinstall FSX and add:

    Pilots Extreme Mesh for Europe

    David's Mesh as mentioned above.

    FTX Global

    FTX England, Scotland, and Wales.

Should be in FSX heaven then........lol.

    Andrew.
