  1. Well all the good hardcore sims I follow are crowd funded.

And all the better for it, I suspect. I have kind of given up on crowd funding of games/music after my mate Kris, latterly of The Orb, had his Kickstarter cancelled by them as he hadn't got more than 15k in a couple of weeks (they decided he wouldn't "make the cut" after it was finished, months hence), and the whole Occulous Rift/Facebook nonsense.

Crowd funding a new flight sim has been a long-standing topic, which, if I went by the notional pledges made to threads discussing it, I would have a lot of money! Certainly enough to kick-start a small game. As has also been discussed, a new sim will (not might) cost millions of $$. Not just making, but marketing, testing etc etc

and, you then have to factor us into it, because, as you say:

unfortunately flight simmers seem to be a very different kind of crowd.

    You don't say :LMAO:

  2. Wonder why is the party that bought the License holding back on the news? I would think they'd want the press and all the attention they can get.

You remember the "welcome" FLIGHT got? That's why, I suspect.

We're a hard bunch of task-masters, the simming mob. If we don't like something, you'll sure get to hear about it. Wait until you have something we like to show us, or face burning in Hell Fire for eternity.

Flight was pushed out the door way before it was ready.

    Amen to that.

I suspect, if they've coughed up serious bucks to get into the party, which, if I read the reports from Tom etc about the original discussions correctly, and the fact that he says they must have "deeper pockets" than the other suitors, means they have paid something quite large for it, they too will be under the same pressures to recoup on investment, and will also be harassed by $-sign marketing guys to within an inch of their life, then whatever they plan to release (if anything) may be pushed out the door way too early, too. I really hope I'm wrong..

The days when "gamers" ran "gaming" companies are long gone. RIP.

  3. Flightsimmers can be strange people, occasionally!

I'd "agree" with this comment. but...(sorry... )

I only just noticed it was gone, to be honest.

It's a shame a few ppl couldn't hold it in to the detriment of those who used it "properly", though, anything that has a "dislike" as well as a "like" is always going south..

Why d'you think Facebook doesn't have one?

I "agree" with all of the sentiments above who thought it was a good feature, but can totally see why it's gone...

  4.

Debunked by numerous sources including 777 pilots

    Psychic ones, no doubt.

The truth is (and it is probably the only truth right now) is that *nobody has a clue*

Some links to the numerous 777 drivers' debunking would be great

    Thanks

  5. Very sound article on WIRED.COM putting forward a theory (from an active ATPL holder) that it had an on-board fire, main busses were pulled (thus entering radio silence - Aviate, navigate, and lastly, communicate),

Then smoke overcame all and it flew on until bingo and then ditched in the Indian Ocean as the Aussies are now saying,.He thinks they were headed for the 18k rwy at Palau Langkawi

    remember Helios 522?

  6. Hi Kim,

Did you restart FSX after removing the entries? I don't think it writes to cfg until you close it down. If this doesn't work, try trashing your controls.xml and re-deleting the EZDOK bound controls once you get back into FSX, then restart FSX and see if it works

  7. You posted this in the wrong forum.

I expect the XP forum users would want to hear this (unless you are trolling, of course?)

There's an endless(ly) boring thread about this in the PMDG (?) forum at the moment..go and tell them..they'll love it.

People in the FSX forum are likely a bit tired of being told that folks are junking FSX. Good luck to you, but..........whatever!

  8. When I have some time I'm going to reinstall X Plane

I've done that three times now. With v's 7, 8 and 9. It's the definition of madness

No more. Every time I did it I couldn't get my head round it. For me, it's like suddenly starting to use (and learn) Ableton Live (which is very good but a whole new paradigm for me) instead of Apple Logic to make music. It's a whole new sim to learn. I have tried exactly that, and spent two days getting my head around the interface alone (a bit like X-P LOL) Never mind the new way of arranging tracks and phrases,

It's a different base flight modelling tech. I know flying is (nearly) the same but if my experience to get to my chosen flight is vastly different, and I can't have all my eye-candy and fave planes (yes, I'm shallow) then I CBA.

If I was new to simming, now that's a better "what if" scenario...I don't know..I'd probably just go for P3d as it has the weight of the largest defence contractor around behind it..In one iteration it has already brought more to its table than the last goodness knows how many of X-P.

X-P has been around since 1993. Laminar has had all that time to get it sorted. It should be a whole different product. I rest my case. (yes, I know he was on his own for a long while - but 21 years is a loooong time)

Damn. I just contributed a dribble to the digital noise. I couldn't help myself...

And why is this in the PMDG forum? Aren't they already developing for a "new" sim?

  9. Oh look! another X-Plane Vs FSX (and now P3d V.2) thread.

Time for a "my sim is better than your sim" megathread methinks? They cause so much clutter and hot air..can't we quarantine them all in their own forum?

The X-P Vs FSX Forum. It's a winner!

(cue irate XP (or FSX) users telling me my comment is not helping)

Sorry, but these threads are so boring and have all been done, again (and again and again) They have no resolution! Stop it already!

Read the last fifteen topics on this subject to gauge where we are at today (then go fly your chosen sim and stop wasting time making pointless comparison. - you either like FSX or X-P or you don't)

    Message Ends. *yawn

That is my opinion about X-plane and FSX. It is not a promo video... have you even watched it!?

It gives my thoughts on both FSX and X-plane and how they differ. There's nothing promo about it.

    It's a very informative video

  10. I had a cabin diff in red on the annc. panel in cruise at FL10 straight after a standard climbout at 1500fpm. I had to hit the dump valve to get rid of the warning. I hadn't touched the press. panel as I wasn't going to need it. Is that a bug?

  11. Is that FlyTampa OMDB? If so, have you installed the FlyTampa libraries? Like ORBX, some scenery calls will ask for custom stuff that is only in their libs.

I had a CTD on final at OMDB (in the 777 only, go figure) every time and now I don't.

It probably has nothing to do with that, but again it's a good illustration of what can affect other stuff. Especially if you are using complex A/C at complex fields and your VAS/PC is on the edge anyway. A bad/dupe bgl or missing custom autogen can tip it over the edge (again, not suggesting the OP has this issue, but..)

I have nothing on my machine except FSX now. And only ORBX, FSDT and FlyTampa sceneries (only one of them - OMDB) PMDG and RealAir planes. I have junked so much stuff I bought over the years and my FSX install is slimmed down. It very rarely crashes and if it does it is usually my stupid overclocking "experiments"

Have you got the Sysinternals suite to monitor your VAS? Are you flying over any other scenery when it crashes in CRZ?

Hope you get it fixed. It's a wind-up when you can't fly. Go fly the RealAir Lancair Legacy for a short while to cool off B) (sorry guys :P )

  12. Stuff crashing out without any errors usually indicates failing hardware (most often the HDD that the program that crashed out resided on).

As you say, Aamir, your FSX HDD just bit the dust. I'd bet you a tenner your HDD has failed S.M.A.R.T.

If no error at all is written to the logs, it means FSX didn't error, or the HDD/Windows dumped you out and no error log was written either because the system didn't log on e, or that the system itself has issues because of failing hardware (which in turn corrupts files).

I had the exact same thing with the exact same PC I am on now. It would just reboot, with no errors. FSX (and other programs) would just dump out, again with no error. I changed my HDDs (S.M.A.R.T test said they were fine) and reinstalled W7 and FSX onto SSDs and it hasn't done it since.

    Just a thought...

    Hope you sort it

  13. hey all,

I've come back to this thread after a few false-dawns. I totally rebuilt my rig AGAIN. :D I thought I had it licked but I was deluding myself.

I read and re-read Jim and Paul's posts. They are right; no amount of tweaking will get you what you want unless the platform is right, and there IS NO substitute for a bad a** CPU and properly O/C'ed system (though I have found O/C'ing badly can sometimes LOWER performance through heat issues YMMV.)

I totally concur with Paul as well regarding NickN's bible. I re-built my rig EXACTLY using his procedures, and I can honestly say it has made a real difference. Again, YMMV obvs. Windows runs better, FSX runs better.

As Paul says, it makes such a difference, as to be totally part of the philosophy of preparing a machine for, and tweaking, FSX. My FSX rig has nothing on it now except FSX and is stripped down to the max.

It just seems to wheeze less now

My 3970X arrives tomorrow, upon which I shall drop it in, O/C it to 5.0Ghz and see where we are then  :D

  14. Hi Jim,

    Thanks for the reply.

When I said VRAM, I meant Video RAM. My grafx card has 6Gb of VRAM. My page file is set to 3072/3072 and I am aware of the 3072Gb limit with 32-bit applications; I run an IT company :) I have 16Gb as I did a lot if video editing with this machine. I don't anymore,so I shall remove half of it. I have been tweaking FSX and my system for what seems like years now (actually, it IS years LOL) and am well aware of the 32-bit wall.

My point was, with only two or three add-ons installed, and only flying over one of them, FSDT CYVR, with 2048mb shadows enabled, and a 6Gb grafx card, my VAS shouldn't be so low (and isn't according to Procmon) that it causes stutters as bad as I was seeing. This was before installing any ORBX sceneries; simply FSDT CYVR and a RealAir Duke Turbine on a fresh install of FSX.

Anyway, as I said; I think I have it licked now. I totally rebuilt my system, which is drastic, I know, but it needed it and it has made a difference.

You do not have the holy grail of computer systems

LOL - what IS the Holy Grail these days? Dual Xeons? I am running at between 4.6 and 4.7 (soon to be upgraded to a 4930K Extreme) That should be good enough to run at 25FPS, surely?

Again, thanks for your time,  :)

  15. Should be no stuttering with your system, Tom, but not knowing what monitor(s) you are using makes it difficult to give you a definitive answer..

Please put your system specs and cpu speed in your profile, so that it appears under your Avatar. Then - copy and rename your fsx.cfg to "Tom_fsx.txt", and attach it to a reply, using the "More Reply Options" (bottom-right). Follow that by posting a screenshot of your Inspector settings, please!

Hey Paul, it's my system (I was OP) and my specs are in my sig :D

I have cured it but by using 17th century remedy. I amputated Windows 8. Totally rebuilt the PC. Re-installed FSX and used the Guide and NickN's new bible over at Flight1 to create the proper platform.

I re-installed FSX and only certain add-ons in a very specific order. I am half way through again, but can say that, as of today, I have no stuttering. I am still using DX9 so far. When I am totally done, I may go back to DX10 as it seemed to deal with newer sceneries better.

Highmemfix=1 is not a tweak. It is a fix that Microsoft developers forgot to add in SP2/Acceleration. FSDT CYVR is a known memory hog if not properly configured. I don't know if you have FSDT's version installed or not but that's the case

Hey Jim. I am aware of the HIGHMEM omission. It is the only entry I am using now, until my system is totally built and finished. I was and have been doing a lot of system-related things wrongly for the last few installs, and am now treating my FSX rig as a "single-use" device, and as such, won't be doing anything else with it.

I am running the FSDT CYVR with HD shadows, but with 6Gb of VRAM and 16Gb or RAM and few extra add-ons, I shouldn't be seeing any problems. My autogen slider is now at 75% and I installed the "mid" shadows on the FSDT and it is now much, much better. I shall report back when I invoke my NVI image settings, as I haven't even set that up yet this time.

I have now rebuilt my FSX rig twice in as many weeks. I am getting bored with it LOL

Have you tired internally locking your frames to 33? Have a look at this thread: http://forum.avsim.n...ce-faq-from-lm/

I no longer use any frame rate limiters. They are a placebo with my system, I think. I should not need them with 4.7Ghz and a Titan! I have tried with and without; internal and external. I get by far the best results with NO limiters anywhere and FSX at unlimited.

    best
