"The Door Into Summer" was the first non-children's book I ever read. I think I was about 12 years old, 60 years ago. Previously I was reading Tom Swift Junior, so the book about an engineer was an appropriate sequel. I recently found a copy for Kindle, and read it twice. It's ever better now than it was then. The second was "Have Space Suit Will Travel", also on Kindle, and just as good. Hook
  2. The music is a Sousa march, "The Invincible Eagle". I kinda like it. The Star Talk segment was quite good. Did anyone else notice that Major General Burt's eye color matched her chair color? πŸ˜„ Favorite line: "You are the very model of a modern major general." πŸ˜„πŸ˜„ Hook

  4. It's used to make gloves. I saw an article about a year ago that described it. Sorry that I can't remember where. Hook

    Busted ! :(

This one has an interesting story. Someone with good skills could probably Google it. When the comic was first published, one of Jane Goodall's managers took great exception and offense and complained to Gary Larson. But when Jane herself heard about it, she loved the comic and even had t-shirts made up with it. Larson ended up visiting Goodall and got roughed up by one of the chimps. It was not specified whether or not the chip had seen the comic. πŸ˜„ Hook
  6. What an incredible way with words! πŸ˜„ That's right up there with how an astronaut described their meals in space: "It is almost, but not quite, totally unlike real food." Hook
  7. I wonder how long it will be before they are worth more as collector's items than the face value of the note. Anyone have any Silver Certificates? Or United States Notes (rather than Federal Reserve Notes)? Or even silver coins? I suppose all those are still legal tender, though. Hook
  8. The only use I've heard for pocketbook is a woman's purse. Hot press: an iron used to remove wrinkles from clothing? Note: I looked it up. Interesting. https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/hot-press Hook
  9. I remember that as being "you'uns" in northern Pennsylvania. I wouldn't be surprised if some regions of Pennsylvania shortened it to "yinz". My mother was from Pennsylvania, and of course, did not speak English. πŸ˜„ They have lots of odd pronunciations and words. You might guess that "wheeds" grow in your yard, but do you know what a clothespress is? Or a pocketbook? Taggers and iggles can be found in zoos. Mom called this dialect "Pennsylvania Dutch", actually "Deutsch" meaning German. Hook
  10. If I had been tasked with developing and testing a top secret radar spoofing technology, I would have done secret tests in a remote area with pilots and radar operators who knew what was going on, but I'd have to do at least one "live" test to make sure people who thought it was real would be properly spoofed. There were probably additional such tests which the pilots and radar operators never talked about publicly. The weapons would be secretly disabled by technicians who were my people. Part of the test would be to see whether a pilot would follow orders that would have started World War 3. This may have been the most important part of the test. Hook PS. Or, it could have been a real UFO. πŸ˜„ H.
  11. I remember when I was a teenager in Texas before we had central air conditioning. I had a portable evaporative cooler in my bedroom. It was about the size and shape of a box fan with some additional plumbing. Enough to drop the temperature a few degrees to something more reasonable. At the time, schools used large outdoor evaporative coolers to keep the classrooms cool. Of course, they only work well when the humidity is low. Hook
  12. I was just outside for a while, 7:45 PM. It is 95F with 30% humidity. As long as I wasn't in direct sunlight, it was actually quite comfortable. I'm 80 miles northeast of Dallas. Hook
  13. This was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. The aliens were a bit scary. I was 6 or 7 at the time. The original was much better. It was the best of the four (I think) versions. The book was even better than the movie. Available for Kindle which you can read on a free PC app. ---- Love the Body Snatchers story. Another good one is Heinlein's The Puppet Masters. The book (recently available on Kindle) is much better than the movie. I actually read that one aloud to my wife before we were married... she had vision problems. Hook
  14. Just give it to a kid. The kid will figure out how to make it work without caring how it works. πŸ™‚ Hook
  15. The last time I saw a movie in the theater, the screen was somewhat smaller than usual and it started with a Netflix logo. I doubt there were a dozen people in the theater watching the movie. Hook
  16. No new account problems. Blood pressure back to normal. Still getting lots of spam, but I can deal with that. πŸ™‚ I'll still be checking for account weirdnesses for a while. Further updates here as needed. Thanks for your support. Hook
  17. This is an excellent idea... but I don't have a smart phone. πŸ˜„ I could possibly use my wife's smart phone but there's some hassle doing that. I never leave the house alone and I use a land line. I haven't had any need to pay extra for my own smart phone. Hook
  18. Got my Microsoft account info verified, my password didn't work and the email addy to send a new one was correct. Password reset properly. I was already signed into XBox Live, so I guess if I ever want to fly MSFS again I'll be able to. πŸ˜„ I haven't flown any flight sim in a year and a half. If they haven't messed with any of my accounts in the next 24 hours they may have forgotten me and moved on. If this kind of thing ever happens to you, keep the faith. Hook
  19. Sounds like someone has some pretty capable drones. Hook
  20. Got my email account back. Finally got the web based password change to work. Whew. I'm going to stay logged in this time (I checked the proper box), although the last time they changed my password even when I was logged in. Well, I guess I can change it back now. If I think my password was spuriously changed I would never ask them to send me an email message to change it. Hook
  21. Thanks, John. That helps a lot. Any other advice you could give is appreciated. Hook
  22. Got a notice that some of my Microsoft accounts require attention. The only way they can contact me is through email. I guess it figures that they'd be messing with pretty much everything. Hook
  23. I'll have to check to make sure I have two factor authentication everywhere else. And... I accidentally closed the browser and lost access to my email account. Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about being auto-logged off and won't have to worry about keep hitting refresh all night. Yuk. Hook
  24. They reset my Steam password, but left email address. Fixed Apparently they have hacked my email account, I cannot change my password. I'll call customer support tomorrow when they're open. I'm currently logged into my email account (it doesn't work in OE Classic) through the web site, so I'm still getting emails. At least until I'm auto-logged out. This is no fun. Hook
  25. Hm. They hacked my Steam email again. I have successfully reset it. Hang in there. Good luck. Don't let this happen to you. Hook
