About Me

  • About Me
Prior to my retirement I held positions as a Corporate Trainer and Computer Programmer. I served with the US Air Force from 1967 to 1971, where I earned my Private Pilot license while stationed in Germany. My interest in flight simulators began in 1985 after experiencing subLOGIC Flight Simulator II on a friend’s Commodore 64. When I bought my first PC in 1991, Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 was installed second only to MS-DOS.

  1. I have Orbx, REX, Active Sky, etc., but quit chasing perfection after I realized that my enjoyment came from flying the aircraft and not viewing the scenery. With FSX I think this is the approach you have to consider because it's never going to compete graphically with MSFS.
  2. I too use Simstarter NG, but also use SceneryConfigEd for quick adds, moving scenery order, etc. During beta it was the goal to maintain complete compatibility with SCE, since Capt. Pero was also a fan.
  3. Scenery Config Editor on Source Forge.
  4. Are you using a specific 3rd party AI program, such as Traffic Global, etc.? MyTraffic X requires an entry in scenery.cfg, but it's added during installation. There may be others. In my case I'm using AIG flight plans and have them in a non-standard location, so I had to add the path to the scenery.cfg file.
  5. If you are using the default FSX AI and haven't deleted anything then there isn't another location. However, if you're talking about third party AI, then you might need to add the SimObjects folder containing the aircraft to FSX.cfg, which is in AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/FSX.
  6. Unfortunately, the author decided to pull the FSX version of SIMstarter NG from the marketplace, so it is no longer available. Sad because it's a great tool.
  7. Just remember if you do, you're going to have to repurchase any aircraft and scenery and I'm not sure if PMDG offers a FSX to P3D upgrade pricing..
  8. Here's the AIG manual install tutorial I wrote for FSX if you can't find yours; https://www.alpha-india.net/forums/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=30325.0;attach=65422
  9. Another frame eater is AI aircraft. Also, having shadows on tends to cause FPS drops.
  10. Excellent. Glad you found something that fills your need.
  11. In the FSX/Scenery/World/scenery folder rename the file trafficAircraft.bgl to trafficAircraft.bgl.off, or other suffix of your choosing. No more default traffic, but that also eliminates GA traffic. Unfortunately, you can't lose one without the other. Well not without using something like AI Flight Planner to modify the trafficAircraft.bgl file.
  12. https://www.alpha-india.net/forums/index.php?topic=28686.0 and https://www.alpha-india.net/forums/index.php?topic=30325.0 As I mentioned in a previous message, manual installs are not easy. AI Manager helps, but there is a ton of work placed on the user if used in FSX, like hours and hours. If you're not prepared for that type of commitment do yourself a favor and put out the cash for something you can live with. Good luck, Ernie
  13. IMHO, currently the most realistic AI is the Alpha-India stuff. However, the installation package is designed primarily for P3D. It is usable in FSX, but the manual installation process can prove extremely frustrating. 🙂
  14. Isn't Traffic 2005 designed for FS2004? Your best bet with a program that old is to hit the Just Flight forum; https://community.justflight.com
