That's a good question. It was a mixture of technical problems (she was a rather complex beast), lack of funds and regulatory requirements by US aviation authorities, once those repairs were finished.

Wonderful set, P_7878! My preferred livery is the Saul Bass skin. I have crossed in the 747SP with this livery the Pacific numerous times. Fond memories!

This time the 747-100 is not ported from FSX, but from FSLTL. As always, the rest is from MSFS. Of course, this is not for the purist, but I can also fly the older birds this way. And the 741, especially with the PanAm livery, just looks good. What's more, many moons ago I crossed the pond in one of these PanAm planes.
