  1.

I just find it weird that in a very well configured machine, the only OOM I've ever had

Perhaps you are assuming there, could it be that you might have other issues and its simply a matter of the 777's demands finaly showing it up?

Have you tried as Jim suggested and looked to see if your dll.XML file for any corruption?

  2. Here is how FTX Global really looks at night over a Swedish town with 80 000 inhabitants.

    attachicon.gif2013-9-7_0-14-24-99.jpg

And this is the same city with GEX and UTX.

    attachicon.gif2013-9-7_0-54-3-181.jpg

No FSX bloom, ENB series or no post processing what ever.

And the FTX Global night lighting is very far from realistic. Nice Christmas Tree, but still not realistic. That's why I prefer GEX and UTX Europe ;-)

I dont get this, makes no sense, those shots are totally worthless and can't prove any point other than vector roads and landclass make FSX look more real if that is your point.

If you want to shiow a "true" Apples to Apples comparison, then either show FTXG with UTX as well or dont show it all.

In other words, just show GEX vs FTXG because anything else is not a comparison. GEX and FTXG are texture replacements that can both be used with UTX. UTX is something FTXG never can be, is not promoted to be and not to be expected.

As for the lighting, ORBX have stated there will be a light configuring tool, so that you can show what you want (and still without the FPS hit vs the other lights).

  3. I find the problem with ultra wide monitors, good thought they are for general tasks, is that in FSX they stretch the view admirably for a wide angle vista of your scenery, but they are not very useful for another very important function: that of being able to see the lower portions of a given panel. We tend to think that eyes take in peripheral scenes only left and right, but in fact they are quite good at peripheral vision up and down as well.

If I had a choice of one or two new monitors, I would hunt for a 4:3 ratio rather than the ever increasing wider and wider aspect ratios. Otherwise you end up with effectively a narrow strip rather like a camera app's so-called panoramic view. The best monitor setup I have ever seen is Bob Sidwick's (RC simulations) PORTRAIT mode panels which are build in an array of I think around 4 or 5 separate pieces, all joined together rather like a modesty screen. You can "fan" them out so they present an almost flat aspect, or you can fold them so they present a more curved view. With them you end up having a very wide scene but also have the benefit or seeing the lower parts of the panel for switches etc without having to pan down, or up. They are rather expensive though.

It isn't an "Ultra wide", its a normal aspect ratio monitor of very fine PPI much like this one, though much cheaper and with probably a few unoticed dead pixels.

    Congrats on your monitor Oscar.

    Cheers!

  4. These are 4XAA, I can assure you. I should have included these NVidia Control Panel settings, because they relate to how NVidia Inspector works.

At 2560 x 1600, my eyes don't see much of a difference going beyond 4XAA in other games/applications (with the exception of C4D R14, but I usually only render C4D output to 1920 x 1080). Moving forward to 4K monitor resolution (3840 x 2160), I doubt AA will be needed at all ... keep in mind AA is actually a filter (filters are to correct problems at a cost). For better image quality I prefer higher resolution and less AA (less filtering), but to each his or her own.

I'm with you, nice PPI helps though at that res it would be better on a 27" as its not that far from the 2408's 1920x1200 .027 vs.025 vs. the 27" .023

Nott trying to be a wet blanket or doubt you but I have never seen anyone override FSX hardcoded DX10 2xAA, Inspector, Rivatuner or what not, never seen it really done and that includes " Steve's FSX Analysis", though I would love be wrong.

If you are using inspector, then you should not be going back into the NVCP or vice versa, as one overrides the other, except in the case of FSX internal hardcoded DX10 AA which neither is effective (unless something has changed recently in FSX - new "tweak" perhaps?).

Glad those settings work for you, which is great and that is what is truly important. I guess I just dont really think they compare with what anyone would consider "normal" HQ display settings for FSX as AG would be shimmering all over the place etc (maybe why you dont use AG?).

Considering all that you are running, no matter what it is still a feat much to be appreciated and those are great shots.

    Cheers!

  5. Same same--it's about a 20% loss of frames when the mouse pointer is visible.  As others have reported, if you're in full screen mode and hit the Alt key to bring up the drop down menu bar you can park the cursor on top of the menu bar and get the immediate improvement.  I think an elegant solution would be program a 'ghost' bar in the same place:  one that is 100% clear and has no borders so is not visible at all--perhaps it could be coded to be user-configurable to be on any side of the display.  The way you could park the cursor on it and not have to look at the menu bar.  The only downside is that the mouse pointer then does not disappear, though this could be programmed out as I notice other 2D sub-panels including the ATC window also serve to put the the mouse curse 'above' the main VC view where the impact is felt, however in all of these the mouse pointer will disappear after the requisite 5 seconds or whatever FSX programs the mouse pointer interval to disappear upon no movement.

When you consider the literally 100's of thousands of dollars spent worldwide to get 20% improvement out of FSX it's kind of bizarre no one has taken this on yet definitively.  Though not all aircraft suffer I know most do in my 6 y/o Core 2 Quad system and my new SB-E system.  I'm not a programmer but I mentioned it enough here in case some kind soul could figure out how to do this.

PMDG, Ryan! Hello? Noel, why dont you PM Ryan, I think this is an excellent idea and a good start to a possible permanant sollution.

  6. I got tired of 3D shooters. I just wish that someone would create a lovely 3D exploration and discovery game instead. You know, where I can explore a rich, detailed environment with lots of stuff to see, hear, read, interact with (using real world physics) etc. without having to fight off waves of enemies every hundred yards. That became tiresome REAL quick.

There's "Myst" or for something totally different maybe try actually going outside, a walk in the park perhaps, look, touch, smell and feel! Its all there man, and you don't need to tweak it! Ha :)

    Cheers!

  7. "Windows 8.1 is less than two months away and it's shaping up to be the first Microsoft OS FSX won't run on"

All remains to be seen, preview is not the release and according to MS FSX is compatable with 8.1 (here.) So lets see how it pans out, though I agree it doesn't look good right now.

FSX is working fine for me on windows 8.0 so I don't understand how we are all stuck on Win7.

  8. Now you have me a steppin' and a fetchin' ... that logic doesn't seem to work (in my limited logical brain) ... if you have an awesome cooling system that keeps the temps around 75C when running a stress test ... and Vcore is a 1.4V then why would the cooling system be the limiting factor?

Wouldn't that be the CPU being the limiting factor?

I think thats exactly what he is saying, in other words cooling will no longer help as your chip has hit the wall.

  9. I'm starting out on a rebuild of my rig. I have most of the components sorted, bar the GPU. I want to buy a new nVidia 700 series GPU but unsure of the optimum one for FSX? 760, 770 or 780?

I fly with either ORBX or payware photoscenery and always use either A) 30" 2,560 x 1,600 monitor; or B) nVidia 3D Vision with a 120 Mhz monitor and 3D classes pilot.png In the future I plan on buying an Oculus Rift instead.

    Any opinions?

If you are talking FSX only, then 780 is best with about 95 percent of the Titan's performance for 60 percent the cost and if overclocking it you can exceed the performance of a stock Titan.

For FSX Bang for the buck is the 770.

  10. Here is what I get during the night flying, weird lines across the dark parts of the screen. Doesn't happen during the day, dusk, dawn nor anywhere else in games like Skyrim, Crysis 2, Withcer 2....

    What monitor?

Are you runing your display at 16 or 32 bit color? If its set at 16 change it to 32 and see if that  helps.

I dont see any problem, if you are talking the relections in the water that is normal, otherwise if you are seeing banding then I think you are using 16bit color or your monior is really 16 bit and dithering to try to make up for it which is the case with a majority of affordable flat panel displays.

And as somewhat mention above, try adjusting your brightness and contrast settings according to what ambiant light you fly in, according to your taste.

Has nothing to  to with calibration, as your not trying to go after corrected color, matched to a printer or to other displays but more to what you can do with your display to match you own preferences or make up for where it might be lacking?

  11. I think the future of FSX lies with FS9. If more new users purchase FS9 they will become more interested in flightsimming and then look to see what else is out there and they will discover FSX and hopefully purchase it. That will keep things alive by bringing in new users. Then they can move on to other great, wonderful, simulations.

Yah Jim, We know..but hey listen, we know you're afraid to get rid of that dead slow AMD proccessor and thats why you prefer the easy running less demanding flat cartoon world of FS9 rather than FSX.

Try switching over to a proper CPU system based on Intel and then you will troll less and fly more and then Everyone will be happy! :)

Cheers Jim and have a great weekend!

  12.  All I can see for public download for the US is the National Land Cover Database 2006 (NLCD2006).  According to the face sheet, the next update NCLD2011 is scheduled for publication in December 2013.  So I guess that is what we are waiting for, though of course this is US not North America.

    scott s.

    .

Public release = Free Data, for the new ya gotta pay or have a way, work with someone in the field etc.

As for the schedules I was going by memory, so maybe there is new data coming out sooner than 16 that would make the 2011 stuff available as public free?

I think ORBX is planning on upgrading the LC for the US area early in 2014. I also read that very soon they plan to release a package of upgraded airports for the usa area. Along with their new textures just released, things should be pretty sweet for us low and slow guys.

There it is, "Low and Slow" was great free LC for NEast Part of US.

I wonder if any of that ever has had any updates or if the developer of that freewhare is still do anything FSX related...Hmmm

  13. but for HDR quality textures all the files will need to be formatted

Not only formatted but Would need new HDR source as well since there would be no benefit using the old non HDR sourced textures. They could be faux proccessed in CS of course, three layers at different exposure etcs but there is just not much to work with to begin with so it would take all new source images to really benefit from it. The other draw back I see is that even by Nvidias own admition the tools available for the developers are limited. But time marchers forward and it will be interesting to see what actually comes out.

    Cheers!

As for EULA, I remember these discusions very well going back to the compuserve FS forum days with Kieth Blackie and everyone else who hacked FS, contributed to our first compiler SCASM and on and on.

Oh well I guess we are all in for it then, since FS has been cracked open, reverse engineered countless times against the EULA while MS turned their back and we are all here still enjoying the benefits of it...OMG!

Can everone just shake hands now? Round of cold drinks for everybody, even Jim, Toms buying. :)
