Luke, I agree. There are a lot of crappy PSUs on the market. However, I like taking equipment manufacturers at their word mostly. There have been times I felt I 'knew better' and found out I didn't... Now, I tend to go a bit the other way and 'over engineer' things. In my radio example, I installed the same model radio in my vehicle. The manufacturer suggested a minimum of 10 gauge wire for supplying power... turns out the manufacturer was right! I tried smaller wire, 14 gauge, and had terrible operation... increasing the size of the supply wire, and reducing resistance, cleared everything up.

I've tried various things to get a glide slope indication on the HSI in the King Air 350 but, it just ain't happening for me. Does it even have that feature? I'm not too good yet at visual approaches when it comes to the glide slope and a gauge would certainly be nice if I can find a way to get it.

Never said the laws of physics didn't apply and I didn't say that you would have more wattage drawn from the pwo3er supply than from the wall. However, I did say that ac and dc are two different critters and they are. I also said that the best method of figuring out what size PSU is needed is to take a look at the specs for everything in the system and add up the wattage requirements. As just a small illustration of things, I have a 35 amp, 12VDC, power supply for radio equipment. I regularly draw a good 30 amps out of it measured inline at the output of the power supply... it's running on a 120VDC circuit protected by a 15 amp circuit breaker. Of course, plugging those values into a wattage calculation means I am barely drawing 3 amps out of the wall to drive my 12VDC power supply at 30 amps (360 watts).
-
Measuring wattage "from the wall" is not nearly the same as the wattage pulled from the power supply. From the wall, you are looking at 120VAC. From the power supply, you are looking at regulated DC voltages. Two very different critters in many respects. Of course, a person could simply take the specs of the components in the system that the power supply will be feeding and add up the wattage to make a decisions on what to get...

It can be expensive but that depends on which license you opt for... Most, if not all, of what you have for FSX will work in P3D but you may have to use a migration tool for a few things.

Yes, that's correct. I run the two small monitors from one graphics card and the middle one for the sim on another but, I could just as easily put all three on the same card. P3D will run full screen without blacking out the other two monitors but, as I found out and demonstrated, FSX won't. I guess that's one of the little "fixes" Lockheed Martin did when they bought the FSX platform...

When I do get things mixed up and put out incorrect info, I try to correct it. We have enough on our hands already most of the time. Incorrect info simply muddies the water.

Boy, was I ever way off the mark concerning FSX and multiple monitors! You can run FSX on multiple monitors in full screen mode but.... If you have the screen resolution in FSX set to the size of your main monitor, it will show up there and black out the other monitor(s). However, you can then slide any instrument panels you open onto the other monitor(s). It makes running addon programs like Active Sky Next or FSCommander difficult though...it can be done but not in a way I like. In windowed mode and the window expaneded to the full size of your main monitor, you still get your full cockpit view AND you get the full use of your other monitor(s) much more easily. You can still undock panels and slide them over as you wish but you can also have your addon(s) visible to use. I have a short demo video on youtube now.

It's pretty easy. Just use windows to configure your monitors...extend the desktop across both, or all three if you have three. Designate the larger monitor as the main one. Run P3D or FSX normally, full screen and all. It will only display on the main monitor. You can then start any program you like sand drag it over to the other monitor. You can also open up instrument panels and undock those so you can drag them to the other monitor. Works like a champ for me.

Looking for combined ATC/Traffic program for General Aviation
alhefner replied to west5786's topic in MS FSX | FSX-SE Forum
It kinda seems so for now if you want any VFR ATC without having a voice controlled program. I too would love a really good ATC that will allow real VFR flight as well as IFR to take the place of the native FSX ATC. The three big players so far each have very strong points as well as deficiencies. If some enterprising person who knew his way around the code could combine all the good traits into one package while solving the deficiencies, he/she would have an unstoppable addon for FSX and P3D. -
I need help

Try again... the appcrashview may help. I have ASN running with P3D and have no issues at all. -
Ummm.... direct from the horse's mouth: Found at the Prepar3d forum thread here: http://www.prepar3d.com/forum-5/topic/prepar3d-v2-license-deactivation-and-reactivation-procedure/

I've been there too! It has been the GPS when it happens to me. I'll undock it and slide it to another monitor then find out that it's stuck fast to the cursor. The only way I've been able to "fix" the problem has been to shut down P3D completely then start it back up. That usually works for me.

Looking for combined ATC/Traffic program for General Aviation
alhefner replied to west5786's topic in MS FSX | FSX-SE Forum
Proatc is an IFR only ATC addon...it won't even load a VFR flight plan. Radar Contact will load a VFR flight plan but then treats it just like and IFR flight so, that casual sight seeing trip is out the window. Voxatc is voice only but is good with VFR flight unlike the two mentioned above. It takes some time to set up so that the program will understand you. It comes with a program that it calls "Flight Plan Training". One might see that and think it is to train you on how to use flight plans. Nope, it's for you to use to train Voxatc on how to interpret your voice. First you go through the basic training and then, if you still have some problems, go through it for a specific flight plan. I too would love a good ATC program, much like Radar Contact, that would really allow for VFR flight...unlike Radar Contact or Proatc. -
That motherboard has two power connectors. One 24 pin connector and one 8 pin connector. For the 8 pin connector, you may have to use two four pin connectors that come from the power supply. Make sure these are properly plugged in and seated.

Trial version just not working for me.
alhefner replied to alhefner's topic in The VOXATC Support Forum
Alrighty then! I've found out a few things. When I installed voxatc, I was mixed up on a couple of things. I thought setting up and 'training' the voice recognition through Win 7 speech system was all that was required... I was wrong! The routine that comes with vox atc called "Flight Plan training" is not to train you on how to use flight plans... it is to train vox atc to understand your messages during the flight! So, first you perform the basic flight plan training and that will get vox atc to understand you enough to get off the ground in the first VFR training flight. However, I found that part way through the flight, ACT could not understand me when I contacted "Center" and the response I kept getting was a generic "<call sign> go ahead". That prompted me to go through the flight plan training for that particular flight and, like magic, ATC could now understand me. Voxatc does "learn" as you progress so, it's process. I'm confident that the program will soon be at s pretty good level of understanding me. A few issues I have are with the voice that comes with the trial version... For instance when ATIS said information "lima" it sounded to me as if ATIS was saying "mina" and that made no sense to me at all. The good part is that voxatch puts up your 'read back' text for you and I could see what was actually said. Another issue also deals with pronunciation of the trial version voices. The word "niner" comes out sounding like "ninter" but I was able to figure that one out easily. I do like the progressive taxi markers... nice purple cones that point the way. Think I'll buy this one! -
Yep, current draw and how your power supply handles it means a lot. The more current that is drawn by your MB, graphics cards, fans, HDD, SSD, and DVD, the harder the power supply has to work. If your current 520 watt power supply is having to keep up with 500 watts of constant draw and having peaks at times where it has to supply more current, the possibility of it overheating and failing, with subsequent spiking of voltage to the rest of your system, is greatly increased. With your current system and the possibility that you may want to add things later on, a 750 watt power supply is not really overkill.

Does Voxatc provide ATC at all airports?
alhefner replied to alhefner's topic in The VOXATC Support Forum
But the ones that do have towers, the small ones such as KTVL (Lake Tahoe) would? Both FSX and Prepar3d seem to be going off of the airport information at the time that FSX was first compiled... at that time, a lot of small airports really had no tower operations at all but over the years have grown so that they do. I'll look through the docs again... -
Trial version just not working for me.
alhefner replied to alhefner's topic in The VOXATC Support Forum
I hope so but, just to try and speed things up, do you remember what it was that fixed it for you? -
Both FSX and Prepar3d lack ATC at a lot of regional airports and I've been looking for an ATC addon that provides ATC at those as well as supporting VFR flight. Both Pro ATC and Radar Contact provide ATC service at the airports but neither actually support VFR flights... Pro ATC not at all and Radar Contact only in the sense that it will allow a VFR flight plan to be loaded but then treats it as an IFR flight. From the advertising on Voxatc's site, it fully supports VFR flights but I don't see any indication of whether or not it supplies ATC support at the airports where FSX and Prepar3d didn't place it. I hope my question is clear!

That's a slick little application but, I'm unsure of what to do with the massive amount of information it gives. From what I can see, it doesn't pinpoint which loaded module actually caused the problem or conflict... Perhaps I should save all that info in a text file and send it off to P3D?
-
I'm not sure if this indicates some problem that could affect things a lot. Every time I exit P3D, I get a warning of a fatal error shortly after. I don't get any text indicating what the error actually is, just that P3D had a fatal error and Windows is checking on it. This happens even when all I have running is P3D and FSUIPC as well as when I have addons such as ASN running alongside. Has anyone else encountered this and found out what it is and how to fix it?

Trial version just not working for me.
alhefner replied to alhefner's topic in The VOXATC Support Forum
I've done that four times so far. I tested things a bit by dictating a test document in notepad... it wasn't perfect but was darned close. I'm trying to solve the issue with Voxatc via email. We'll see! -
I did look through this forum and found other people have had the same issues but, I didn't find any solution in any of the threads. At first, after starting P3D and loading the VFR flight the manual directs, clicking the "enable" button for Voxatc would result in Vox ATC crashing with a fatal error... after a few attempts, that stopped happening and I got to the screen that tells me to tune in the ATIS frequency and listen to ATIS. So far, so good until I am told to tune in the international clearance frequency. That gives me the prompt of what to say, keying the mic with the space bar, to get a radio check. No response at all. I decided to skip the radio check after several attempts and I'm informed to ask for clearance...I do and get no response. Just to see if anything was being 'transmitted' I said, "Yo clearance" and did get the response "unidentified aircraft say again". That tells me that the program does 'hear' me but for some reason can't recognize my request for clearance. I tried the variations in the manual and the best I got was "unidentified aircraft say again". As initially stated, other people have had these problems but I have no idea if they found a solution.

I have the same issues... lots of time on google even for what are considered the 'simple' airplanes!
