  1. Where did you dig up this 6 year old thread from? 😂
  2. http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php/723980-Truth-about-CPU-degradation
  3. Hi Rob, Yeah I have a custom loop that is keeping temps at about 70 on 4.4GHz at 1.35v. So I think that's well within acceptable limits to not be of any concern whatsoever. Seems I have a really good chip here. It's only 2 of the 10 cores that go hot too....most hover around 55-60 during stress tests! Regards, Ady
  4. Well, good news, I managed to get 4.4GHz at 1.35v which is, "roughly" what you said is recommended 4.5GHz, whilst great, didn't appear to make much, if any, difference to P3D's performance. But, in Seattle, using Rob's GA City Day graphic settings, I hit 100% cpu usage across all 10 cores at times!
  5. Well ASUS recommend 1.38v for 4.4GHz. On what basis are you saying it is too much? Because, and forgive me, but I'm more inclined to go with what a motherboard manufacturer says. I also believe that @Rob Ainscough also had to put a lot of voltage through his 5960X and it did perfectly well.
  6. Well, with some further testing, I've actually managed to get 4.5GHz out of it at 1.4v which, contrary to the earlier poster, is not too bad for these chips. Temps don't get as far as 80c under a 15 minute stress test which is absolutely awesome - it is on a hi-end custom loop though. I have purchased the Intel over locking warranty just to be on the safe side! Performance in P3D is outstanding so far! I'm using an ultra-wide 1440p G-Sync display and may just swap over to my 4K Sony TV at 30hz see how it goes locked at 30. Problem is that I use my pc for more than P3D and it's difficult to do work and other things on a TV screen.
  7. @Cruachan Thanks very much for your feedback. I've so far managed to get a very stable 4.4GHz out of the 6950X at 1.38 volts. The DIP system managed the same but was putting a whopping 1.5 volts on the CPU! With my manual overclock I can keep temps broadly below 70 degrees with HT off and a teeny bit hotter with it on. Unfortunately I have a rogue core that gets hot whilst the overs hover around the 55-65 region. I am just going through the process of getting the OS setup and will then be looking P3D. Can't wait to see it without blurries this time!
  8. Yes I could've done but it was a case of not wanting to sit without a computer whilst waiting for the Rampage VI to come out. Then, secondarily, I didn't want to go through the teething problem stage of a new board. Only now, around a year following its release, has the Rampage V properly stabilised through BIOS updates. Next time, I'll not be an early adopter. The 6950X will service me for a few years 😀
  9. @Rob Ainscough The Rampage V Edition 10 and 6950X arrived and I put the system together through today. I can get 4.4GHz out of it which, whilst lower than the 4.6GHz I ran the 7900X is really not that much. Going to install P3D tomorrow so will report back. Hopefully no blurries!
  10. It does indeed Rob but, then again, so did my 6850K and I never had issues with blurries with that. I honestly believe the issues are specific to the Gigabyte implementation. I could go for the same board as you but it's the white that puts me off - sounds silly but the entire rest of my build is black and red focused and it'll just look really odd. Shouldn't be the basis on which to decide these things but, in all honesty, I'm just weary of X299 now and want some stability. Using X99, even if I don't get the same overclock, will at least give me stability. I'm reasonably confident I'll get similar performance as you on my 1440p ultrawide with the 6950X. Time will tell :)
  11. I've I've spent the last few days now trying all sorts of different combinations of BIOS settings, drivers and even versions of P3D (v3.4 and both versions of v4 - with and without the update) and, in every case, I cannot shift this blurry texture problem. I have already got an RMA number for my Aorus Gaming 9 and that will be going back this weekend - deep joy at having to drain the custom water cooling loop but hey ho! So the next consideration is what to replace the board with. I've been waiting for news on the new Rampage VI Extreme/Apex boards but nothing heard as yet - ASUS did provide a 'coming soon' video yesterday but, given I'm in the UK, I suspect it's at least a month away. I've decided, therefore, to do away with my attempt at the X299 platform and revert back to the good old X99 instead. So I shall be getting a Rampage V Edition 10 and a 6950X and a full board monoblock from EKWB to keep everything nice and cool. Given that this is a much more mature platform, I should be able to just get on with flying from day 1. I don't think being an early adopter is for me....lesson learnt! To that end I have a 7900X, capable of overclocking to 4.7GHz comfortably and probably 4.8 with some extra tweaking. Anyone in the EU interested - please drop me a line. I'll post an add in the hardware section too.
  12. I thought there were some other folks on here with i9 7900X chips on X299 - I assume, from the silence, that nobody else has had any issues....?
  13. Yup - and I went with Enterprise to avoid too many updates I have indeed got power set to High Performance. Seems I've done everything right so RMA it is.
  14. Same drivers as me then. I've been using a fresh install of Windows 10 Enterprise 1703 but I doubt that will be of any significance? I have indeed installed all other drivers as available from the Gigabyte website. I think RMA it is. The impatient person in me wants to buy the PRIME X299 Deluxe but I think I'll wait for the Rampage VI Extreme or Apex and their improved VRM cooling capabilities. I also don't like the white all over the PRIME board - my current theme is red and it'll clash
  15. Sure, I meant I would try to install the original P3D v4 rather than the latest updated version. I seem to recall, in the early days of testing the new build, that I didn't have these blurry issues. So something's changed. One thing I know has changed is the version of P3D v4 I'm installing. Seems sensible to rule this out as a factor. I have indeed tried moving my M.2 drive to every slot possible. I've even taken it out of the equation completely - but the issue persists. I think it has something to do with Gigabyte's implementation of power saving capabilities - though I have tried turning everything off, there is no option to completely disable Intel Turbo Boost Max 3.0 - just Legacy or Native operating modes. Only in legacy mode do I get the Windows application where I can disable it. But I do not see the same effects of it being enabled as you did - no core pegged at 100% or anything like that. In Native mode, apparently Windows has the drivers built in. But there is no application or settings mechanism that I could find. I've tried using a fixed frequency, using motherboard defaults, using an overclock with power savings turned on etc. Essentially I've tried everything I can think of and am now reaching the conclusion that it must be the board. I've tested my memory fully and no problems there and don't see how this could be graphics card related as everything else I throw at it seems perfectly fine. Out of interest Rob, what display drivers are you using? So I think it's RMA time (unless installing the original P3D v4 somehow fixes things). Thanks for all of your assistance with this one - it's much appreciated!
  16. Well, for me, this is with an untainted P3D installation - literally installed and then tested, no add-ons or anything. It is even blurry with default graphics settings. So I'm confident there's a problem here - I'd just love to know what's causing it. I suspect it's Gigabyte's unique implementation of Turbo Boost.
  17. Hey Rob, Yes I did and I tried all sorts of other configuration options in the BIOS. But nothing seems to stop the poor texture loading - without the EXP=10 confit edit. All of my testing so far has been with no add-ones installed whatsoever and on a 1440p ultra-wide. I do have an M.2 but it's installed, via an Aorus card, to its own PCIE 4 slot on the board. So shouldn't be conflicting. I'm going to install the non-update V4 as, for some reason, I have an inclination that it may be the cause of my troubles. Will report back. Regards, Ady
  18. Alas, nothing I seem to try fixes the problem. Whilst the blurries are no longer as bad as they were, they still exist and P3D is struggling to draw the terrain before I get to it. So tiles are sharpening up all around me just before I arrive (even at slower speeds). I've turned off V-Sync to find frames of >100 (limited to 50FPS with V-Sync on). Most odd and all with standard out of the box scenery and no add-ons installed. Never had this before and a bit perplexed. Going to have one more go tomorrow evening and then will resort to plan a and return the board.
  19. Yup, understood. But, if you're finding HT off improves your sim, I'll likely discover the same :-)
  20. Thanks Rob - my board is different in this regard. I've now got legacy mode in the BIOS and now, and only now, have the ITBM device. I've installed the driver, disabled it as you indicated, and will now get P3D installed for some testing. Any AM with HT disabled? Thanks for your help, Ady
  21. Hey @Rob Ainscough I have an RMA number for my Gigabyte board but, just on the off-chance I can use legacy mode then disable Turbo Boost in the same way you did, I'm in the midst of a reinstall. Will let you know the results - fingers crossed as I really don't want to drain my custom loop, send this board back and then wait up to a month for the Rampage VI.
  22. Yup, I'm sure. But setting the BIOS option to legacy gives the app you're referring to where I could set disabled. Coming from the Rampage V Extreme, this Gigabyte board has some odd ways of doing things!
  23. Aha well spotted Rob. Unfortunately, on my Gigabyte board, Turbo Boost is always on with no way to disable it. The only option I have is whether to use it in native or legacy mode. Native, the default, doesn't add any driver/application to Windows whilst legacy does. So I'm going to stick to my plan and get rid of that board and await the arrival of the Rampage VI Extreme. Regards, Ady
  24. But I've never had this on a clean install with high-end components. I think, in my case, there's a problem with the Gigabyte X299 BIOS as there lots of stability issues. I'm going to return the board and wait for the ASUS Rampage VI Extreme. Until then, back to my trusty X99 and 6850K.
  25. Now that's interesting Rob! I've been struggling with this - even with a fresh install and no add-ons, I get blurry textures. I've tried all sorts and can't fix it - but will try changing AM on the fly and see if it fixes.
