  1. Both the laptops I’m looking at are workstations but they have the specs of what a gaming laptop would have in the first place. After all the feedback, which I very much appreciate, I have the confidence to go forward with a purchase tonight. Thank you everyone.
  2. Great points but I would probably opt for a much smaller display due to dorm room size. Additionally, while my major isn't set in stone yet, I'm doing engineering so I need my laptop to pack a punch for stuff like CAD and Wolfram Mathematica. If I rely on a desktop for performance, I'm going to have to go back to my dorm room to run calculations. This just isn't convenient, especially if I'm working with multiple people on something and we're in a conference room or some other setting. I rather have everything mobile. It really just comes down to personal preference. It also doesn't make sense for me to get a gaming computer because I decided to get rid of all of my games except for flight sim. If I didn't do that, I would have too many distractions. I chose to keep one thing for my sanity's sake, and that was FSX. I wish I upgraded to P3D earlier though, back when my parents would still pay for things...
  3. Interesting, that’s basically the same build as Laptop A. What kind of FPS are you getting during takeoffs and landings at airports such as JFK or LAX?
  4. Thx for the input Mark. Perhaps I’ve been overly worried about performance. My current laptop is one that my parents bought me during my freshman year in high school, and it doesn’t even meet the minimum requirements on PMDG’s website. I get 10 FPS on the ground if I’m lucky. This laptop upgrade is one I have been looking forward to and I hope to get it right.
  5. That’s exactly my situation. The dorm rooms are too small for a computer, and I need something mobile to take around campus and to class. Good points, but the desktop just isn’t an option due to what I said above. I can get Laptop B with the better processor but that would really be pushing my budget. I would only get it out of necessity. That being said, would you still recommend Laptop B?
  6. With the holiday season coming up, I’m planning to treat myself with a new laptop and an upgrade to P3D from FSX. Before I go through with any purchases however, I’d just like some opinions on the following laptop specifications. Laptop A Processor - Intel Core i7-8750H 6-Core 2.20GHz (4.0GHz TurboBoost for just 4 Cores, 3.9GHz TurboBoost for all 6 Cores) Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 Max-P Memory - 32GB Kingston HyperX Impact 2666MHz (2x 16GB) M.2 SSD Drive 1 - 512GB Samsung 970 Pro PCIe NVMe M.2 M.2 SSD Drive 2 - 512GB Samsung 970 Pro PCIe NVMe M.2 HDD - 2TB Seagate 5400RPM 2.5" Hard Drive Total Cost - $3228 USD Laptop B Processor - Intel Core i9-8950HK 6-Core 2.90GHz (4.5GHz TurboBoost for just 4 Cores, 4.3GHz TurboBoost for all 6 Cores) Everything Else - Same as Laptop A Total Cost - $3895 USD Additional Costs Regardless of Laptop - $1071.59 USD worth of purchasing P3Dv4 compatible add-ons If money grew on trees, then there wouldn’t be a reason to get Laptop B. But since it doesn’t, is the better processor really worth the extra $667? Rather, is the better processor necessary for a good sim experience? An average session in P3D for me would comprise of a PMDG aircraft, ASP4 weather, Rex 4 Texture Direct + Soft Clouds, payware airport scenary (Flightbeam, Drzewiecki Design, etc.), and ChasePlane views. Ideally, I’d like my sim to run at 30 FPS or greater the entire time. With all this in mind, do I need that better processor?
  7. On the 777 and 787, Boeing recommends to leave the autothrottle on during landing, even when performing manual flight. To my understanding, this is due to the use of fly-by-wire. However, I wonder if the same applies to the 747-8. Since the -8 shares a type rating with the -400, that would lead me to believe that you are supposed to disengage the autothrottle during manual flight. However, since the -8 utilizes fly-by-wire, that would lead me to believe that you are supposed to leave the autothrottle on. Clearly, I’m not sure which is right. Can anyone shed some light on what Boeing recommends for the 747-8?
  8. This happens from me time to time as well, but when it does, I can’t open any pdf file on my computer. For me, it’s never been something wrong with the Ops Center or the PMDG flies but rather my pdf reader. I can’t guarantee you’re having the same issue as me but try opening some random pdf that’s not PMDG and if you can’t open it then it’s likely your pdf reader acting up.
  9. I just noticed that in the Ops center, as well as the aircraft selection screen in FSX:SE, the Delta B748 image is actually a B744. Nothing major, incredibly minor in fact. Just figured I’d point it out anyways.
  10. I wouldn’t even bother thinking of a timeline until NG3 is officially announced. Yes they have said it is coming but not in a thread dedicated to it pinned at the top of the forum. We just got the -8, let’s live in the present rather than the future. 🙂
  11. Hi, welcome to the forums! Please note that full names - first and last - are required to be typed into your post on the PMDG forums. It is recommended to include your first and last name in your forum signature, that way you never have to worry about it. As for the issues you are having. Possibly an activation issue? Best to send a ticket to PMDG at https://support.precisionmanuals.com/
  12. Hello, It’s been over a month since I made the request so I don’t feel too bad bumping this up. The aircraft in question is now flying! With entry into service soon, a paint for flight sim would be very much appreciated. Thank you! Google Image
  13. Well, GFO and NG3 are I n the works. Plus, they probably are also concurrently working on updating the existing 777 product line as well. But if you’re talking about projects besides these...I’d say another plane is a good bet 😛
  14. I think I slept for too long. Judging by the date of the announcement, we’re in 2019! 😛
  15. I'm not planning on any purchases until the new year, but I figured I better start searching for a new laptop now. Currently, I fly FSX and XP11. However, I plan on getting P3Dv4 with my new laptop. So here is my question: I am currently eyeing a Origin NT-17 laptop that will come with two 512GB M.2 SSDs and one 2TB 5400RPM 2.5" Hard Drive... Where should the OS, P3Dv4, and XP11 be installed? I understand that the OS should be on its own individual SSD. I also understand that the flight sims best be on their own individual SSDs as well. Unfortunately, that's three SSDs when I only have two. Should I put the OS and XP11 together on one and P3D on the other? Or should I put the OS and P3D together and have XP11 by itself? Should the HDD come into play at all? I honestly have no idea. Thank you to everyone for their opinions and help in advance.
  16. I plan on getting a Jetline one day. If only they built laptops, then I could get one now. Desktops are just a bit too big for a college dorm.
  17. PMDG aircraft release with a certain AIRAC. Whether or not that AIRAC will also come with charts for the EFB I do not know. Even if it does, to get the latest AIRAC for the FMC and charts for the EFB, yes you will need a Navigraph subscription. Based on previously released information and Chewwy’s live stream, all you have to do is log into your Navigraph account in the EFB itself and you’ll have access to the charts. No extra work required there. If I’m wrong, my apologies and please correct me. Personally, I believe a Navigraph subscription is a must for any flight sim enthusiast so long as it is in their budget. Back when Navigraph offered it’s 30-day FMS data, I would purchase that once a year. Then, when they took that away and I was forced to buy the monthly FMS data and charts subscription, I just couldn’t get myself to cancel my subscription and purchase once a year like I had been doing. Those Jepperson charts are just too good to give up. Anyways, hope this helped.
  18. Not sure what went wrong with the links but for any potential painter that needs a reference, search B-17881 on google images and you’ll find the two images of the aircraft that I was talking about. Also, I would have just gone ahead and made an edit to the OP rather than make a new comment but I don’t seem to have an edit option.
  19. Hello, Would anyone be willing to paint B-17881 on a QualityWings 787-9? It is Eva Air's first 787-9 (first 787 even) and it is painted in a special livery scheme. I've managed to find two pictures of the aircraft sitting on the Charleston flight line. Neither image shows the tail of the aircraft clearly, so I understand if a painter needs to wait for more pictures to come out before painting the aircraft in flight sim. I'm not sure if the images are copyrighted, so I'll simply put the link to the images below. Thanks in advance, James
  20. But the FSX/P3D default scenery gates numbers don't match with the real world gate numbers. Unless I misinterpreted what you meant when you said you extract from the scenery.
  21. Hey Kyle, question about the gate assignments. I run on Navigraph Charts most of the time, but occasionally I have to drop the subscription for a month due to financial reasons. However, Navigraph is the only place I know where I can find out exactly where a specific gate is. So my question is, for people who don’t have a chart subscription, how will they know where to park after they get the assignment from GFO?
  22. I believe Kyle mentioned something about a new plane that you guys haven’t told us about yet. 😜
  23. It sounded to me like you were trying to downplay what GFO offered, my mistake and my apologies. I’m more than aware. I follow the checklists to a tee. But at what point in the checklist do I stop for the aircraft to be considered in a turnaround state? If I follow everything in the secure procedure and electrical power down procedure, I’ve put the aircraft back in cold and dark.
  24. With the introduction of GFO, we’re moving closer and closer toward realism. And with the feature where the panel state is left the same, perhaps PMDG can clarify what state their aircraft should be left in for turnarounds? As mentioned before pilots rarely put the aircraft in cold and dark. I have an idea of what a turnaround state should be, and I have saved that panel state on my aircraft, but some confirmation would be nice.
