I deleted the software distribution software folder and rebooted my PC twice and the problem is fixed!  As you said my windows redownloaded the files and the distribution folder is back but no problems have occurred. Maybe now windows can start downloading updates again.  I have not had any updates for W-7 for a long time.

    Thanks again for your help!

    Couple of questions:

What is in the software distribution folder, what function does it perform and what will happen if I delete it? Will it come back?

FYI, when I booted my PC I checked process explorer and everything looked normal and then I watched as a program called "trusted installer" started running and started the scvhost service with 12% CPU usage.

Not sure this makes a difference but I am running windows 7.

    Thanks for your help!

Firstly, as you mentioned in the previous message that after you stop Windows Update, your CPU is back to normal. So I can jump to a conclusion that it's the cause.

As for your question, software distribution is a folder that Windows uses to store all downloaded files of Windows updates. It will use those files to install and update your Windows OS to fix bugs or add more features.

By deleting this folder and reboot your computer, you will refresh the download process again and force Windows to re-download those files. The point is that sometimes those files are corrupted and so Windows can't install updates. That's why it's stuck and cause this high usage issue.

You can try to delete that folder and let me know whether the problem is fixed or not.

I was checking process explorer today and noticed that svchost was just below idle process and using about 12% cpu usage.  I am using W-7.  I went into the task manager and located all the services for the PID for that svchost.  I chose to stop the windows update service and the cpu usage for idle process went back to its usual 99%.

I wonder how long this has been going on without my knowledge.  Maybe I need to change my windows update options.

Just rebooted and I still have the problem!

    Hi Airbus,

Have you tried to delete SoftwareDistribution folder yet? I would recommend doing so. Get back to me the result.

Also, Update Troubleshooter is good option to try too.

I have stopped all of them and I think it's wuauserv.

So, it's because of Windows Update. According to what I found in this post and some other recommendations in answers.microsoft.com support community, the first step you need to do is to restart this service: wuauserv. Sometimes, restarting it will also help to fix the problem.

If the problem remains, you can refresh it by removing the SoftwareDistribution directory that's located at C:\Windows. However, if you want to remove this folder, you need to stop wuauserv from running. Otherwise, it will alert you that it's using by another application and won't let you remove it.

If removing the SoftwareDistribution directory can't help too, use a free tool from Microsoft, called Windows Update Troubleshooter. You can download it here. After downloading, use it to diagnose whether your Windows Update got any problems. If it found, it will help you to fix it.

Besides, an outdated version of Windows Update sometimes can cause a few irritating problem, like this one. You should update it frequently.

Let me know if your problem is resolved.

    Hi guys,

I've upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for three months. Since then, there is no problem with my PC at all and I use it daily.

However, today after powering up it, I noticed it ran slower than other days. I open up Task Manager and found that one svchost.exe process (many of them were running there) was using a lot of my CPU resource.

I can kill it and of course, I have killed it, however, after a while, it automatically starts and begin to eating my CPU.

    What should I do now?

I've encountered the same issue last two weeks, so to assist you easier, can you use Task Manager or Process Explorer to find out which Windows service stands behind the svchost.exe that you mentioned?

To do that, bring up Task Manager, click on the "Details" tab. Then, select svchost.exe, right-click on it and choose "Go to service(s)".

It will show you all Windows services that related to that svchost.exe process.

    Just list them out!

  6. Hi All

Been about a fortnight since I last played any P3D. I've went to go and do a flight and plugged in my Saitek X52 and I get an immediate BSOD with the faulting module SaiH0255.sys and System Thread Exception Not Handled.

Never had the drivers installed before but tried installing them to see if it changes anything and it doesn't, still receive the same error. x64 W10

You can remove that driver out of your computer, it will help to resolve the issue.

  7. Update for Windows 10 Pro 64 to 1607 went smoothly yesterday...just had to reinstall DisplayLink driver.  Started testing various apps...found the update had de-activated FSX.  Tried a repair...fails with InstallShield error...usually 1628.  Tried an uninstall...Accel Pack uninstalled but FSX failed with fail to load uninstall helper DLL error.  Accel Pack will not reinstall as it says FSX has to be activated.

FSX will still launch and work but will shut down in 30 minutes as expected since it has been deactivated. Nothing I have found on the Internet has worked.  As you can imagine...many years of add-ons.  Almost at the point to clean the registry of all FSX related entries.  I do have P3D and started migrating a few weeks ago but all aircraft and add-ons not available for P3D yet...but most of the critical things have had P3D versions or migrated successfully.

Anyone seen this issue with FSX...any recommended fixes?

What kind of DLL errors you got? Can you show me the full error message? Or just take a screenshot of it!

  8. Never have that problem. I use nVidia GeForce Experience to control my video card updates. Windows Updates does not interfere.

Me too, I never use Windows Update to update the driver for important parts, like graphic card.

  9. Several times already, in the middle of a flight, I had an unexpected system shutdown. The picture freezes and there's a sort of rattling noise comming from the speakers.

When I look in the event viewer, there are only a couple of messages about the system not shutting down properly, but nothing at all about what caused this. The last entry in the event viewer, before the shut down, was well over 2 hours before it happened. Theres no warning, no error, theres plenty of VAS available, the program isnt slowing down, everything seems to work as well as it gets...

I really dont have a clue what to look for, any ideas at all, about where to start, would be great.

Have you tried to check minidump file yet? I think it was a BSOD error.

You can use BlueScreenViewer from Nirsoft to find out.

  10. I have a dual-boot system and have cloned many drives successfully using cloning software for several years. The drive being cloned cannot be the "C" drive, the active operating system.  I boot up on the other system with the drive being cloned and the drive being copied to, as for instance, "D" drive to "E" drive. Have never had a problem.

Of course, I don't say we can't clone a normal drive that stores data. I just say we can't clone a drive that store Windows OS and make it works like before. That's also what @virtualflying is asking for.

  11. If you clone the drive, remove the original ssd. Boot with the new (cloned) drive. Then reconnect the original ssd and format it and assign it a new drive letter I can't see how that wouldn't works why do you guys think this will bsod?

Many users think like the way you thought and already did the same. However, it won't work that way.

I've tried the same method because I want to switch to a higher drive when running out of storage space. However, BSOD errors came and nothing I can do. I've tried to uninstall drivers of the original SSD before cloning, it didn't work too.

  12. All windows OS`s run svhost in the task manager windows cannot run without it, in widows 10 open task manger then open services tab and see which programs run in the background on startup in my case I have

stopped tom-tom update services and other updates services form running on start up, I then manually check for update when I choose.

As far as I know, Task Manager is only a manager program that shows you a list of running programs in Windows. It definitely that svchost.exe is called by Windows and run by Windows. Right?

  13. I found a fix from the netsvcs , the issue is now resolved. Thank you all for your help. All i had to was clear the event viewer log

Can you explain a bit further about the method you have used to resolve the issue? I'm encountering the same issue right now and looking for a solution to resolve mine.

It would also help other users.
