  5. I will be releasing a NEW FSX Simcopter. This version is a complete re-do of Sim Westerly. New 3d object by me have been added along with many object by other 3d modelers that I have downloaded from avsim. The missions are now easier to install with a self installing .exe. and easier to complete. You will only fail if you jut can not finish it because you just ran out of time to play it or you crash your helicopter. THERE ARE NO CODES to unlock the zip file. You do not need to finish a city to play another city. Look for the video at youtube which I will upload in the next two days. The mission will be uploaded here at avsim after I have completed testing the mission (Groton Connecticut) and removing it from my flight simulator and using the installer and testing it again to make sure nothing is missing. I will also be uploading Pontotoc, Mississippi, a reqeust that was sent to me some time ago. Sorry for the long delay as I was working hard on this re-make. Please post any questions, comments or requests here. Enjoy flying SimCopter again. David Crandall

This is to inform everyone that the AVSIM Signature Rules have changed http://forum.avsim.net/page/AVSIM%20Pages/sig.html. AVSIM has a simple system where everyone can place system specs and information about your Simulator and various add-ons. We are therefore asking that you remove system specs from your signature and place them in your profile. There's even a place to list your favorite simulators and all of the add-ons you currently own! The information can then be seen by everyone in the sidebar under your Avatar (see my sidebar!). It's easy to do! Just go to your Control Panel (click on your user name in the upper right corner) and click on 'My Settings' and then scroll down to 'My PC'. Remember to review it occasionally and update it as you purchase new things or update your computer system. Our Moderators have been informed to provide you with "friendly reminders" if you forget to remove your system specs so we ask that you do this as soon as you can. While in your Control Panel, look around and update your other information too! Best regards,

  8. Welcome to the new support forum for Mindstar Aviation. After our own forums were hacked last year, we realized that we simply didn't have time to deal with such behaviors and were at a loss what to do. Thanks to Tom Allensworth and his AVSIM staff, we now have a new home for our support forums.

We have brought online a new donation system. The issue for us that caused this change is that the old system did not recognize the member's support of AVSIM (other than to get a big thank you message upon completion of the donation payment). This new system gives the donor a little bit of public recognition for their contribution and support. Here are the details: All of the forum donation buttons now take the user to a Marketplace page with the donation alternatives displayed. There are 7 selections at the moment: $5.00 – Donor - 3 months $10.00 – Donor – 6 months $25.00 – Donor - 9 months $50.00 – Bronze – 1 year $125.00 – Silver – 1 ½ year $250.00 – Gold – 2 years $500.00 – Lifetime – No time limit The durations have to do with an indicator that will appear in the user’s side panel profile with each message they post. This is accomplished by moving them to a new group. When the duration expires, if they have not renewed, they will be moved back to the “member” group. The Lifetime contributor remains a lifetime contributor forever. Every member who donates will be sent an email 7 days before their donation expires in order to renew it, or not. Renewals are not automatic. That means that the system WILL NOT automatically charge you for another donation. Here are the images that appear: If you want to see an example of this, look for FPPILOT’s post in this topic: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/433916-approachscenery-misalignment/ You are not obligated or required to contribute of course. Access to all of AVSIM remains free. If you decide to contribute, the AVSIM Staff and your fellow community members will be shown your support of this community. And if you do contribute, thank you in advance for doing so. EDIT: We are working on refining the images and some other details.
  12. Michael MacKuen made the following announcement just before 1500 EDT today. Closest Race Ever Concludes in a Dramatic Finish over the Black Sea (Wednesday, February 19, 2014) The 2014 Round the World Race was completed on Monday night with the three teams racing over the Black Sea into Sochi's URSS. After racing for fifty eight continuous hours, the end of the race was the closest ever. Team AVSIM finished at Sochi first but was carrying thirty five minutes' more penalty time as Team FlightSim and Team Sim-Outhouse came barreling in over the sea. Everyone was watching the clock and the visual flight tracker and the clock again – while trying to estimate whether the penalty margin would be enough or not. As fsxar177 and mickj300 screeched to a stop on the floodlit tarmac we all discovered that the difference was three minutes – FlightSim was not quite able to maintain the gap. Sim-Outhouse, flying accident-free, slipped in just before Team FlightSim for second "on the ground" though they carried a slightly larger accumulated penalty and finished third overall. Mr. Murphy, the carrier of ill-fortune, visited all three teams in about equal measure; but in the end, the maladies were allocated about equally so that the race was pretty much determined in the air. The finale showed just how equal are the teams' flying, planning, and organizing talents. The Wilhelm "Wilhe" Bendit Trophy Race Finish Order and Net Race Time The finishing times, counting the net bonuses and penalties accrued during the race, are: Team AVSIM 55:51 Team FlightSim 55:54 Team Sim-Outhouse 57:25 Congratulations to the 44 pilots who participated in this year's dramatic event. Kudos all around. Additional individual awards for performance will be announced in the coming days. The Executive Committee offers our thanks to all who participated.
  13. AVSIM is looking for an IT manager that is very experienced and willing to volunteer to maintain and keep our systems running at peak efficiency. This person must be a U.S. Citizen and must reside in the U.S. The volunteer must provide at least five verifiable references and a resume detailing at least 5 years of experience in an IT technical position. Preferably, this person should live in the middle east coast area, and be available to travel on reasonable notice (weekends, etc.) to supervise services provided to our hardware located in northern Virginia. Needless to say, being a flight simming enthusiast will add significantly to our consideration of this person. Ideally, the candidate will have the following critical experience: Unix / Linux (Centos Linux) Apache server MySQL DNS, LDAP, DHCP, FTP, SSH NAS, Switches, Router, Ethernet configurations and mapping PHP Admin Tools that will initially be available to the candidate will be Webmin, Usermin, SSH Telnet, FTP, NAS front end software, and router administration among others. Additional skills that are "nice to have" would be web design, Java, familiarity with IPBoard, management of subcontractors and an ability to work under pressure when necessary. This is a very senior position within AVSIM and could result in appointment to the AVSIM Board of Directors with time and experience. As a BOD member, this position contributes to the direction and policies of AVSIM and helps to establish AVSIM Community outreach and charitable initiatives. If you are interested in this position, please email your resume and references to bod@avsim.com. DO NOT post a reply to this in the forums. Please only respond if you are serious about the position and are willing to volunteer your time to the management and continuing success of the flight simulation community's premier resource.

  15. Tom has been a very significant contributor to the flight simming community for years. He runs the California Classic Propliners website (http://www.calclassic.com/) and has created too many aircraft add ons to count. He is one of the most well known aircraft designer / contributor in our hobby. It is our pleasure to award him our Member of the Month for February 2014. Congratulations Tom!
  16. The 2013 Demographic Survey is now concluded, and we are pleased to present the results to the community. We think you will find this information interesting and useful in your future involvement with our hobby. We look forward to your interpretation of these results.
  17. Rob has been a consistent, credible and well thought of member of our community for quite awhile and has earned our first MotM award for 2014! Congratulations Rob!
  18. Exciting news for those of us who enjoy the Screen Shot Forum! Today, Tom Allensworth (Owner and CEO of AVSIM) (The Big Kahuna) has announced changes to the Rules of The Screen Shot Forum. Quote: If images are hosted by AVSIM: No more than 10 images per post Image weight and size restrictions remain the same Image will now be allowed to be stored for 120 days, rather than 90 If images are hosted by a another site:Up to 20 images per post Images will be forced to 1024 pixels wide when displayed in the forum - clicking on image will display the original image size No limit on weight (but poster should forewarn readers of large images Overall changes no matter whether uploaded or hosted elsewhere:Images can appear in subsequent posts in a topic, however first message in topic MUST include imagesEnd Quote Can I get a big Woo Hoo? Important facts to consider: If you upload your images to AVSIM, there is no change to the current rules (except they will be available for 120 days instead of 90 days) If you host at a third party, you can now post as many as 20 images linked from the Screen Shot Forum. This should make quite a few of us pretty happy. The truth is not many people would want to wade through more than 20 images at a time. And ... if you want to post more than 20, start another thread. As a bonus, you can now append images in a thread after the first post! This should make for some great threads. These new rule changes have benefits for everyone. They come about after some great discussions on the forum. I would like to thank all you guys who participated in those discussions, Chase Kreznor (My Boss), Stephen "Spirit Flyer" Wilcox (His Boss), and of course, Tom Allensworth (Everybody's Boss). Let the good times keep on rolling.
  19. Release Date Announced! Active Sky Next by HiFi is officially scheduled to release on December 9th, 2013. A fully-functional 7-day trial will be available, letting everyone find out first-hand how ASN can dramatically improve their simulation experience. Active Sky Next (ASN) is being called “The next revolution in weather realism” and contains a brand new hybrid weather depiction system with the new ASConnect interface, enabling comprehensive control of the weather environment. Compromised weather depiction and multiple weather modes are a thing of the past. The new ASN hybrid depiction system brings the best of all worlds together. It features accurate cloud depiction, dense coverage, thick overcast skies, smooth cloud changes, 360-degree variable cloudscapes and fully accurate and smoothed ambient weather including winds, visibility, temperature, pressure and precipitation. Also new to ASN is an extremely accurate precipitation radar simulation, facilitated by new cloud position awareness. Detailed radar returns match the depiction and intensity at all times, and new cloud-synchronized ambient effects provide a significant boost in realism. Variable in-cloud visibility reduction, precipitation and cloud turbulence is synchronized so that you experience things when you’d expect them. New air effects bring enhanced turbulence, microburst simulation, wind shear, terrain-influenced high-resolution up and down drafts, ridge lift, thermals, and improved wake turbulence that properly drifts with the wind. Forecast data integration, enhanced thunderstorm depiction, a brand new user interface, voice weather briefings, hail simulation, inter-layer wind interpolation and brand new map overlays are just a few of the other new features. ASN is planned for release on December 9th and will be first available for FSX. A Prepar3Dv2 version is expected to be available shortly after. An ASN license enables use of either version. An upgrade version will be available for recent-generation Active Sky users (ASX, ASA, ASE and AS2012). A video and screenshot contest will also be held during the first week of ASN’s release. Anyone can participate using the free trial. $300 cash will be awarded to the video winner, and $150 to the screenshot winner. For more information including screenshots, videos and latest news from the developers, visit the ASN website at www.activeskynext.com.
  20. The Fall Event Team is happy to announce The Transcontinental. In a sense, this is a six hour event similar to the much longer Round the World Race. This is a live real time race running coast-to-coast from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Set in the late 1940s, the main aircraft are World War II surplus fighters (specified in a White List). The structure of the event will require several refueling stops. Solo entries are fine, multimember team entries may be even better. The start time is at 0800 PDT (1500 UTC) on Saturday October 26, 2013. The event will take about six hours from start to finish. European and North American pilots should be able to make the event's timing. Pilots with limited free time may participate on a team while making a commitment of only a couple of hours. Entries are due on Wednesday, October 23 – although late entries and changes will be almost surely be approved by the Committee. Please see the draft of the Official Rules available from a Dropbox account here. This document is "near-final" but may be modified before the start as we receive feedback from the participants. So if you have an idea about how to make the event work better for everyone, please post your suggestions in the announcement thread at the SOH Multiplayer Forum. For help from fellow AVSIM pilots, and general conversations about this sort of online event, you might go to AVSIM's Round the World Race Forum here. Lots of friendly and helpful simmers there.

We received the following from TapaTalk this afternoon. I encourage all TT users to read closely: I would like to know your thoughts as a TT user.
  22. We have introduced a new feature here at AVSIM entitled the AVSIM Member of the Month Award. If you go to the bottom of the main forum page, you will see January's winner of the first MoTM award. There is no prize that comes with the award; just the recognition that your participation and contributions to the AVSIM community are appreciated and deserve public viewing and congratulations. Please congratulate our first recipient of the AVSIM MoTM; edetroit.

  24. The Board of Directors of AVSIM and our global staff are pleased to welcome back Doug Horton as Contributing Editor. Doug became hooked on flight simulation in 1990 and he wrote reviews for Avsim in our early days. Our hobby led him to achieve private pilot certification in 2000, an instrument rating a few months later, and he’s been writing exclusively for flight simulation magazines since then. Doug is returning to Avsim, where he will focus initially on writing reviews about hardware for flight simulation, from computer components to displays and other accessories; an area of reviews that we definitely want to increase our tempo with, and one that we are confident that Doug can deliver. A little bit of Doug's background; after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, Doug became a nuclear submarine officer, where he believes he spent about 10,000 hours underwater. After 25 years combined active and reserve service, he’s a retired Navy Captain, and subsequently, he’s served as a corporate executive, consulting engineer, and professional speaker on engineering topics. Doug holds graduate degrees in engineering and business, and he currently flies a nicely equipped Cessna 182S with several co-owners, based at Chicago Aurora Municipal Airport (KARR). With a few add-on gauges and control panel modifications, Doug simulates flying the same airplane in FSX. You’ve likely seen and met him at several Avsim conventions, including the most recent in Wichita. From all of us at AVSIM, we’re glad to say, “Welcome back Doug!”
