  1. It is indeed a pleasure to announce AVSIM's 18th Birthday today. We have had our share of sad news this last week, but with the bad also comes the good. 18 years! Happy Birthday to AVSIM and all of our community members! Please head out today and celebrate in your traditional fashion!
  2. We are pleased to announce the release of the 2014 Demographic Survey results to the community. Here you will find the compiled data from the survey which was ran for most of the year. Over 2,900 of your fellow flight simulation enthusiasts participated in this survey and we think you will find the results interesting. All of the raw data used to compile these charts can be found in the AVSIM PUBLICATIONS area that you can access from the right menu area; HOT SPOTS. You can view the results and join the conversation about the 2014 survey here.
  3. We are pleased to announce that AVSIM will be bringing online live streaming video within the next 30 to 45 days. AVSIM will be providing a “channels” based system that allows any community member to establish a streaming video channel on either Justin.tv or Twitch.tv and then be fed into the AVSIM system’s video line up. Think of it as AVSIM providing the services of a Comcast, Direct TV, Sky TV or the Dish Network as examples. The AVSIM channel system will indicate to the viewer which channels are active and not, chat while watching and more. We will provide the channels and you can pick your favorite while participating in the forums or elsewhere within AVSIM. Unlike the basic Justin and Twitch services themselves, AVSIM will be acting as an aggregation and one-stop service for all flight simulation live stream channels. Twitch.tv will allow in-game streaming so that group flights, RTW races, and VATSIM and IVAO events, can be fed live to all viewers on AVSIM from within the broadcaster’s flight simulator. Justin.tv will allow broadcasters to set up channels that are not in-game. For example; virtual airline news channels, community news, how to channels such as “Learn to paint your aircraft”, “learn to create scenery”, “learn the FMC”, etc. We will be adding more channel sources as we further develop the system. Please stay tuned. We will post more as this system comes closer to launch.

  10. Michael MacKuen made the following announcement just before 1500 EDT today. Closest Race Ever Concludes in a Dramatic Finish over the Black Sea (Wednesday, February 19, 2014) The 2014 Round the World Race was completed on Monday night with the three teams racing over the Black Sea into Sochi's URSS. After racing for fifty eight continuous hours, the end of the race was the closest ever. Team AVSIM finished at Sochi first but was carrying thirty five minutes' more penalty time as Team FlightSim and Team Sim-Outhouse came barreling in over the sea. Everyone was watching the clock and the visual flight tracker and the clock again – while trying to estimate whether the penalty margin would be enough or not. As fsxar177 and mickj300 screeched to a stop on the floodlit tarmac we all discovered that the difference was three minutes – FlightSim was not quite able to maintain the gap. Sim-Outhouse, flying accident-free, slipped in just before Team FlightSim for second "on the ground" though they carried a slightly larger accumulated penalty and finished third overall. Mr. Murphy, the carrier of ill-fortune, visited all three teams in about equal measure; but in the end, the maladies were allocated about equally so that the race was pretty much determined in the air. The finale showed just how equal are the teams' flying, planning, and organizing talents. The Wilhelm "Wilhe" Bendit Trophy Race Finish Order and Net Race Time The finishing times, counting the net bonuses and penalties accrued during the race, are: Team AVSIM 55:51 Team FlightSim 55:54 Team Sim-Outhouse 57:25 Congratulations to the 44 pilots who participated in this year's dramatic event. Kudos all around. Additional individual awards for performance will be announced in the coming days. The Executive Committee offers our thanks to all who participated.
  11. I think all community members (or most anyway) are interested in the growth of our membership here and some of the other trends that might be revealed by our stats. So, here is the last three months of data on usage of the AVSIM Forums and your fellow community members.
  12. Hello, No, the CTD I'm talking about is not the dreaded Crash to Desktop, so familiar to us all. The CTD that I am referring to is a serious affliction that affects hundreds, nay thousands of Fight Sim enthusiasts all over the globe. To the uninitiated, they appear as normal people, but to those among us, the signs are as clear as the bright sun on a cloudless day. I've no doubt that while you may not be able to tell for sure, everyone knows someone afflicted with this horribly devastating disease. It is a malady that knows no boundaries, no social classes. It crosses international borders without conscience or impediment. It has ruined relationships, destroyed careers and emptied more bank accounts than a cheap hooker with a bad cocaine habit. That's right, this is CTD, otherwise known as Compulsive Tweaking Disorder. Hello, my name is Jeff, and I'm a Compulsive Tweaker. For many years now, I have been a flight simulator enthusiast. Since my first foray into the world of flight simulators as a young lad back in 1983, I have, like many before me, been in search of that Holy Grail, the creme de la creme, the magic bullet that would give me what I crave; the ultimate PC based flying experience...flight simulation nirvana. Today, I sit here firmly entrenched in a relationship with FS9 that has lasted near a decade. Though I have, on occasion, been known to mingle with other mistresses; FSX, X-plane, and a few others over these many years, I nevertheless find myself drawn back to the safety and comfort of a well known and trusted partner. I know just where to touch her to make her purr like a kitten. I know when she's not in the mood, and I know when I can push it, and when to back away. While to outsiders this may seem to be an insane anthropomorphizing of a few lines of code that make up a computer program, to those suffering with CTD, it makes as much sense as endowing your cat, your dog or your goldfish with human emotion and characteristics. So in spite of any desire to find a cure, and contrary to all rational thought and nearly every logical fiber of my being, I continue to tweak. Mostly in secret now, when no one is watching and after the wife has retired for the evening, I sit in my dungeon. Downloading, altering, testing, rebooting, reinstalling this add-on or that. For every little improvement in frame rate and every minuscule reduction in stutters and stammers of my simulator over the years, perfection remains an ever elusive adversary. The closer I get, the more it mocks me. Even now, I hear its' laughter in the depths of my mind, wheedling and cajoling me to push the limits even further. "Come on," it says to me, "You know you want it. You're not going to give up now, are you?" Ever aware of the hold it has on me, I find myself as Captain Ahab in pursuit of his nemesis, Flight Simulator being my Moby Dick. "These are the times of dreamy quietude, when beholding the tranquil beauty and brilliancy of the ocean's skin, one forgets the tiger heart that pants beneath it; and would not willingly remember, that this velvet paw but conceals a remorseless fang." And then in that final moment of heated confrontation, "From hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee." My name is Jeff, and I'm a compulsive tweaker. I am in the process of establishing a support group to help others with this sad but all too common ailment. But we need your help. Please contact me through private message to arrange for your donation to this honorable and worthy cause. Every contribution you make goes directly toward the research, treatment and prevention of this tragic and malicious disease. We happily accept credit card and PayPal only. Please do not send cash as we have found that we just end up buying more add-ons with it. In the meantime, please stand up and share your story with us. There's no need to hide in dark corners and hallways any longer. You are not alone. We are here for you. No, we don't yet have a Twelve Step program, but we're working on it. Thank You, Jeff Disclaimer: This has been a public service announcement. The views and opinions expressed herein do not necessarily (and probably don't) reflect the views and opinions of AVSIM, its' agents or its' members.

Who: All who wish to attend. What: A gathering of friends from around the world to honor Tom Allensworth -- the founder of AVSIM -- who loved the community very much. Knowing Tom, and his selfless nature, he wouldn't want us to grieve or be sad that he isn't here with us, but rather, he would want us to do something in his name that brings joy to us for many years to come. What better way than flying that brings us all together in his memory. The AVSIM Staff and Allensworth family thank Trucker17 for starting this tradition.
