Enabling SLI on my system results in frame rate DROPs of 30 to 50%! System description: ASUS Maximus VI Formula, 4790K @ 4.6G, 16G, RAM ASUS 980X x2 one in x16 PCIE slot, the other in x8 PCIE slot P3D on dedicated SSD Two monitors at 1920x1200. One runs the main sim view, the other has several 2D panels shown. PMDG 777 FSUIPC, FreeMesh X, REX, REX Softcloud, ORBX Global, both ASN and PATCX on network, FSDT KIAH, GSX Using one 980x (SLI disabled) my frame rate is very stable at 30 fps with all internal and external views. Switching on SLI and using the NCP and NVI default settings results in a drop to 10-20 fps in all views. Note that the cockpit view is highest at 20fps and the other internal views are in the 10s. The GPU usage shows GPU1 running ~3% and GPU2 ~20%. Flying with this is problematic. CPU utilization is ~40-50%. I have tried other SLI settings but have made no improvements. Running Battlefield 4 both GPUs are 95%, so SLI hardware is working. Latest NV drivers are installed. My P3D settings are as follows: [JOBSCHEDULER] AffinityMask=84 [Display] ChangeTime=4.000000 TransitionTime=4.000000 TEXTURE_FILTERING=8 MSAA=4 SSAA=0 VSYNC=1 FXAA=0 TRIPLE_BUFFER=1 SLI Users Only - Temporary Solution to reduce Artifacts
Skywolf posted a topic in The Prepar3d Forum
Hey to all SLI users Only, Below is a list of files which need to moved away or renamed etc (extension changed) in order to minimize SLI artifacts. Readers this post only Applies to NVIDIA SLI users of Latest P3D v2.5+ (2.5.12945.0 / 2.5.12946.0 HF4) with latest Nvidia Drivers (353.30) which have Prepar3d profile, as this is does NOT affect Single gpu users at all. For my research only: While I was playing with these files, I did notice that SLI is rendering some the bmp files in a different way - I was changing the bmp in these files, and sometimes the effects just worked. If the graphics experts in this forums who have experience with DXT 5 and extended bitmaps - take a look at them. Easy place to start is looking into the fx_vaportrail_l.fx, fx_vaportrail_r.fx files - they provide excellent trails with P3D's default flight with the raptor. Just load that flight and take off fast, and look in external view - all those lines, but then again it works fine in single gpu environments. Anyway for SLI users, just zip these files and that way for the time being you will get flights with very minimal artifacts with SLI. Remember to apply these files back if a new update comes. This is a very temporary short gap measure for the time being only. Either LM will get it fixed or Nvidia's newer upcoming drivers etc. In All it is 36 Files in your Prepar3d V2/Effects directory fx_cloudlightning01.fx fx_cloudlightning02.fx fx_cloudlightning03.fx fx_cloudlightning04.fx fx_cloudlightning05.fx fx_cloudlightning06.fx fx_cloudlightning07.fx fx_cloudlightning08.fx fx_cloudlightning09.fx fx_cloudlightning10.fx fx_contrail_l.fx fx_contrail_missile.fx fx_contrail_s.fx fx_lightning01.fx fx_lightning02.fx fx_lightning03.fx fx_lightning04.fx fx_lightning05.fx fx_lightning06.fx fx_vaportrail_l.fx fx_vaportrail_r.fx fx_wake.fx fx_wake_carrier.fx fx_wake_l.fx fx_wake_m.fx fx_wake_s.fx fx_wake_ss.fx fx_wake_Sulphur.fx fx_wake_xl.fx fx_wakeBow_carrier.fx fx_wakeBow_l.fx fx_wakeBow_m.fx fx_wakeBow_s.fx fx_wakeBow_ss.fx fx_wakeBow_xl.fx fx_WakeCSM.fx Enjoy Skywolf PS - Rob can you let the LM team know about this. Might help to look exactly here instead of browsing everywhere in effects and effects/textures directories -
Hello all I am building a new system to run P3D V3 w/ ASN, REX texture Direct + Soft Clouds (Soon to be SKYFORCE 3D), multiple high detail aircraft addons (PMDG,A2A, Flight1, Carenado, etc), orbx and the list goes on. Here is my parts list http://pcpartpicker.com/list/pqNJVY I have a question regarding the capabilties of my graphics setup. My 6700K CPU is from silicon lottery pre-binned and delidded running OC at 4.9Ghz stable so i shouldn't have CPU limitations and the resolution will be 11520x2160 Triple 4k 50" TV's and 2 x ASUS GTX 1080 Strix Cards OC'd in High Bandwidth (HB) SLI (Nvidia SLI HB Bridge) 1.) Can this setup operate p3d visuals around 30 fps? Preferably high to very high quality note: I use FSDT, Fly Tampa, and Flightbeam airports with GSX active also use ORBX Base, Vector, and NA Gold & Blue 2.) Outside of being too costly is there any modifications that need to be completed prior to ordering everything? Thanks, Ben

I have the opportunity to purchase a second 980 (EVGA 980 SC) for my system and I was wondering if SLI improves the performance of P3D. I am not looking for high frames but rather want reduce choppiness and blurry textures and improve the smoothness of my flying, especially when in heavy clouds. I believe my supporting hardware is reasonable (4790K @ 4.8GHz, 16GB of 2400MHz RAM, and Windows 7 with P3D on a stand-along SSD). I should also mention that my monitor is 1900X1200 so not very demanding resolution-wise. I'm curious as to what I can expect in performance as well as any potential problems I may have getting SLI to work with P3D. I know this is a hardware question but I posted in here as my question is specific to P3D.

Hey guys and gals. This will be a crazy funny thread and the settings may work for you only if you have an equivalent system. SLI is a must. Before I begin I would Request that this thread be kept Civil and fun. We all know that KSEA area in Orbx FTX PNW is a resource hog. I wanted to see if I could figure a solution which works for me. These settings are probably not needed when not using full fat FTX regions with a heavy airplane addon like PMDG. My Idea: Yes, I want to fly the PMDG 777 as a GA aircraft on top of all those FTX regions and payware aircraft I have. Why would I want to do this: Because I can and this is a virtual world of all and I have the hardware for it. If I can get the system loaded with this much scenery, then all my other addons will act like a breeze. Especially over Orbx KFHR and FSDT CYVR on top of Orbx PNW. These sceneries are resource intensive Specs: I have oc i7-5820K to 4.3Ghz, 16 GB DDR4, 2x980 SLI. And lots of 4K monitors. But sim is set to 1 4K monitor as Primary SLI monitor and other 2 4K monitors are all work 2D related. Addons Installed : Flightbeam KIAD, KDEN, KPHX, FSDT CYVR, KJFKv2, GSX Orbx: Global, Vector, OpenLC Europe and NA, FTX Regions: SAK-PFJ-PNW-NRM-CRM-NCA-SCA and few Orbx NCA P3Dv3 Airports like KFHR, KSTS, KTVL MyTraffic 6 with latest patches OpusFSI: For Cameras Active Sky Next: Default Settings for Weather FSUIPC for VAS info in the title bar Rex 4 Textures: Clouds are at 512 and rest is 1024 Resolution: 4K on SLI Prepar3d.cfg Tweaks to reduce blurries when flying PMDG 777 (newly updated one with better VAS) over PNW at altitude 10K Feet or 15K feet. Need 4 Cores for VAS Management [JOBSCHEDULER] AffinityMask=340 You can also use 30 if HT is off. See which one saves you VAS [GRAPHICS] TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD=2048 Need to ADD THIS (and these are stated in the LM performance tuning guide) [DISPLAY] TextureMaxLoad=12 (You can try 9, 12 or 15 etc, needs to be multiple of 3, but higher number can induce stutters - for me 9 or 12 works smoothly) [TERRAIN] SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT=10 (I am running unlimited frames, with this settings I did not really see any slow texture loading when I am panning like crazy on spot view, I didn't really any drop in performance at all --- especially for KSEA area). You can change this to values which suit your system LOD_Radius is set to 4.5. I can not go above this when using PMDG 777 over FTX regions. FFTF [MAIN] FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.40 (even though this high, but I don't see any issues on my system with SLI graphics) GlobalTerrainView is set to True from False UseGlobalTerrainView=True Once the P3D runs. You need to this VERY IMP TWEAK to get all the cores running at full activity. There is a weird bug in P3Dv3.1 I do see that my Core 2 for example is running but at lower task activity vs Core 1, 3 and 4. I was like why is this core low performing. And then I did this simple trick. I open up Task Manager in Windows 10 and go to Prepar3d, right click on affinity and let the menu show up. I do NOT change anything and just hit ok to the window which shows that I can enable Core 0 and Core 5 if I wanted to. I do NOT enable any other core as VAS spike will happen. Just click on "oK" and viola the Core 2 is now running on full power. And the lowly rendered frames are gone. These are very weird and bizarre issues. Free VAS Menu Trick Another Tweak is if you are running low on VAS - Just click on Options and go to a Settings and wait few seconds and then hit cancel. You will see some VAS free in FSUIPC counter if you have one. I usually get to save somewhere between 50-100MB depending on the location or scenery I am in Flight Plan I did to Land at FSDT CYVR with VAS. Here is what the FMC had. KSAN-OCN-SLI-LAX-SFO-STS-CBU-TCM-SEA-PAE-FHR-CYVR STS is Orbx KSTS CBU is KPDX - Orbx standard KPDX FHR - is Orbx newly released KFHR. I really can go over KFHR at 15000 Feet with PMDG 777 and it renders very well. Slightly slow but as I get there, it does show itself very well. This is also at .65 mach speed. Result is when I finally landed in FSDT CYVR - I had close to 250MB to 300MB VAS Free. That is good enough for me. Summary: 1) Get the updated PMDG 777 2) Texture size to 2048 - trust me some of those photoreal areas of NCA/SCA work better with 2048 3) TextureMaxLoad=12 4) SWAP_WAIT_TIMEOUT=10 5) FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.40 6) UseGlobalTerrainView=True 7) Mandatory - CPU core affinity trick using simple windows task manager. Just click OK when you see all the cores. You can see the activity in the CPU graphs. 8) If need some VAS free on the spot - just open up a menu like the settings menu wait like 1-5 seconds and hit cancel. Use FSUIPC title bar settings for VAS calculations. Now can someone tell if there is a VAS Leak with Car traffic or not. I can't figure it out. Here are the pics of my settings Hope you enjoy it. Again - this may not work for you. But the CPU Core Menu and VAS Menu Trick work really well. If you can tell where I can improve my experience please let me know Thank You, Skywolf PS (I do apologize for any spelling and grammar checks, I am typing this quite fast)

Hi AVSIM members. Nu-be to this site. If posting in the wrong area please advise and I shall do my best to adjust. I have always wanted to build a flight simulator. Tried and failed. This will be my third attempt. Have all the parts required for a PC to run FSX, this will include a projection of the screen via a 5000 lumen unit onto a flexible curved screen. Have started the motion platform and have motors and control board ready to go 3 DOF motion. Anyway onto the problem I have, I dare say this topic has been discussed before so if anyone can suggest links then please do so. I Have two graphics cards ASUS NVidia GTX 790 linked via motherboard and connection link ribbon. NVidia drivers up to date and running NVidia inspector with a few tweaks. Card No1 in the PCI-E slot marked x16 on the MB as the main driver and the second card in the second PCI-E slot marked x2 on the MB as GPU support for the first card. Running NVidia inspector shows GPU card No1 at around 80% usage when flying over EGHH airport frame rate around 45-59 FPS. CPU is an intel I7 3.6 GHz overclocked to 3.9 GHz on air cooling at a temp of 94d. The second GPU card No2 via inspector shows it running at 0% usage. I know from reading forum posts that FSX runs better from faster CPUs and GPU not used so much. Question being am I using both graphics cards to display FSX in PhysX mode connected to a Matrox tripplehead2go via DVI cable to HDMI. or am I only running off one card. Also because one of the cards is in a PCIE slot marked x2 am I throttling card No1 to the lower slot speed. Even though the performance is good I wander if it could be improved. Thank you in advance IanMC

Hello all, During my early first SLI test with Prepar3D (remember the AFR-FriendlyD3D trick),several simmers notice that the GPU load never get higher than roughly 50%. A kind of 50/50 GPU load situation. Not that much efficient for a SLI configuration. I don't know since when*, but I noticed this last days that my PC case was warmer than ever (and I clean fan and other stuff inside regularly). Launching EVGA PrecisionX 16, I can note that each GPU gets far higher than 50% (very often close to 80% depending on scenery load obviously). * I just have update my nvidia driver (yes, I like to test stuff) to 361.91. I guess previously driver was the one downloaded and installed late december last year. Did I set something without knowledge and activate a better GPU split/load when SLI enable or is that a driver/P3D SLI Profile that brings better performance ?

Well, my second ZOTAC GTX 980 arrived today so that I can start on SLI with P3D. Unboxed it, and it had no SLI bridle in the box. Of course I pitched the one from the first 980 I bought because we wouldn't have P3D SLI in our lifetimes. Can't believe it. Searched through four boxes of old cables , three old MB boxes and two large boxes of AC adapters that I have and I found two sets of Palm software if anyone needs it Bottom line, I managed to find an ASUS SLI bridle from a couple of years ago. They physically fit - are the pinouts compatible and a standard part of the spec from major manufacturer to the next? I still just can't believe it. Jeff Callender

Following several post in this thread (http://forum.avsim.net/topic/455351-still-no-sli-support-in-nvidia-34465/#entry3113581) here is the step-by-step process recommanded by nVidia to make our voice be heard. Download and install Geforce Experience (30mb and if you want to keep your installed driver you may so) : http://www.geforce.com/drivers Launch GeForce Experience and go to the Game tab, then click on the “Send Feedback” button on the bottom right Select - “Feedback Category...” = “Game detection and support” - ”Select a sub-category...” = “Suggest a game we should support” - Point to the installed location of your Prepar3D (example c:\Program Files (x86)\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v2\Prepar3D.exe) - In the Comments field, type something like this one : Hello nVidia, Lockheed Martin Prepar3D is one of the most advanced flight simulator on PC. SLI and proper AA would be a extraordinary helpfull for all P3D customers and certainly for all owners of 2 or more nVidia graphic cards. So far the benefit of having an nvidia SLI configuration doesn't worth the cost and it's not at the level of customer satisfaction nvidia owner may expect. Please considere adding SLI support for Prepar3D in an nVidia profil. Best regards," Yep. It’s just a drop in the ocean but many small one make a big one isn’t it ? Ps : for those that want to spread the buz out-of-AVSIM forum : http://20-100-video.blogspot.fr/2014/11/prepar3d-sli-support-i-have-dream-let.html

if anyone have 2 GPUs, did you try new FSX SLI profile in NVIDIA control panel? http://www.nvidia.in/object/sli-technology-games-in.html There are 2 profiles: Flight Simulator X and Microsoft Flight Simulator X ??? What's the difference? Will this raise FPS or not? Sorry, wrong forum. Should be in HW. How to remove?
