It's with this interest that AVSIM is pleased to announce a new set of image policies which allow for more self expression and creativity! If images are hosted by AVSIM: No more than 10 images per post Image weight and size restrictions remain the same Image will now be allowed to be stored for 120 days, rather than 90 If images are hosted by a another site: Up to 20 images per post Images will be forced to a maximum of 1024 pixels wide when displayed in the forum (or a size smaller as to not exceed the width of the reader's monitor) - clicking on image will display the original image size No limit on weight (but poster should forewarn readers of large images) Overall changes no matter whether uploaded or hosted elsewhere:In the Screenshot forum, images can appear in subsequent posts in a topic, however first message in topic MUST include images The full image posting policy is available at this link for your review.

We are pleased to announce the opening of the new Classified Advertising and Bargain Basement system. The new system bring a considerable amount of functionality to the advertiser that we could not provide in the previous forum format. As with the forum based system, members are encouraged to post bargains in the simulation and hardware marketplace. If you have hardware or software for sale, you can post your ads and they will be viewed by potentially thousands of AVSIM community members. I inadvertently deleted some images earlier looking at one variable and deleting based on another. The images were posted in the last week or so, maybe less. So if you find an image that you posted in a message, and it is now gone, please repost it in the original thread. If you posted a single image greater than 400K in size, then the image was deleted deliberately. Once again, we are seeing images far over our 400Kbytes maximum per image upload size. They will get deleted. Keep your image sizes to less than 400K and they will remain.

A couple of weeks ago, when we attempted to upgrade the underlying system software to its latest revision, we discovered that the 43 tables associated with the LINKS system were corrupted. This was one of the major reasons that the upgrade failed. We have since replaced the links system, but were unable to recover the data that had been stored in the database. We apologize to everyone who helped populate the LINKS system; there was a tremendous amount of information stored there. Please visit the new LINK system and resubmit your site, your favorite sites, and other information as you can. system news AVSIM System Status Update - January 20th, 2014

An update... When we reinstalled TapaTalk and updated the software and hooks associated with the latest release, our server load exploded by approximately five times. And it has been fairly consistent at that load level since. As we increase connections approaching 900 to 1,000 users the system gets very slow. Some will see a 503 error and will continue to see 503 errors until we can get some of our architecture rearranged. I just want everyone to know that until we can make those changes, things could get flaky. And there might be times at peak loads, that we will shut down access via TapaTalk and searches from the various search engines in order to keep content flowing to our registered members. This is a dual post. -

The new system bring a considerable amount of functionality to the advertiser that we could not provide in the previous forum format. As with the forum based system, members are encouraged to post bargains in the simulation and hardware marketplace. If you have hardware or software for sale, you can post your ads and they will be viewed by potentially thousands of AVSIM community members. Well, after some long days, we seem to have licked the issues that arose with the update to the IPB base software. As you can see, most functionality of the previous system is back and more importantly, the site is up to its previous speeds of response. I want to thank almost everyone for your patience and understanding during this bit of a flight diversion. We are now back on course, and things can settle down to the low roar that was AVSIM a week or so ago. -
A subject came up recently in which the scheduling of Teamspeak sessions was discussed. We have made it a little easier to make and show schedules to the forum community. If you wish to schedule a TeamSpeak session, either for discussions or fly togethers, you can do so relatively easy. To schedule your session, click on the CALENDARS link within the FEATURES tab in the menu above. Then, click on the TEAMSPEAK calendar link and pick the date and time that you want to schedule your session. You can also click here: http://forum.avsim.n...dule-of-events/ Unclick ALL DAY EVENT and put in you start time. Enable SPECIFIY END DATE and you can schedule the time that the TeamSpeak event will end. Once you have scheduled your event, it will appear in the side bar block (three blocks down from the top, on the right hand side of the forum's Index page) of the forums system for all to see. By clicking on the event, the reader will be taken to the the TeamSpeak calendar and will read the detail you have provided in your scheduled event. EDIT: I forgot to add that you can schedule your start time in your local time zone, and that time will be shown as the reader's local time. Example, if you live in New York and call a session for 12 in the afternoon. The would appear to be 1700 to a reader in London, and 0900 to a reader in San Diego.

Well, after some long days, we have seem to have licked the issues that arose with the update to the IPB base software. With the upgrade of our forum and content software over night, we have introduced a new feature which we think will be a great addition to your use of the system. This is the ANSWERED function. What this does is provide the ORIGINAL topic poster (the OP) to decide which of the following answers to his question was the right answer. When that OP gets the right answer, he can annotate it as such for follow on readers to note. Mods and Admins can also designate messages as 'answered' and they can also deselect them as well. The next message following this one is an example of that function.

We have just opened the new AVSIM Video Library. The video library is an aggregator (for lack of a better word), where videos hosteb by YouTube, Yahoo Video, Google Video, etc. The purpose of this library is to provide a showcase for video makers, commercial members, and those wishing to share their flight sim experience in one place. Now, instead of having to search through all the various video servers, users and video makers alike have a one stop place to catalog their creations and provide them to their community. The videos are not hosted by AVSIM, but simply cataloged by the contributors and made available to their community members. A test video in the new Video Library can be found here: Test And important feature of this new video library is that commercial members can place videos of their products and upcoming products in the library for the AVSIM community to view and discuss. Another important feature is that everytime a video is placed in the library, the pertinent information and a link to the video page is opened in the forums. This provides users in the forum notification of the video availability and a place to hold longer discussions about the video or product. We have placed a number of categories in the new library and are looking for suggestions on others. If you have categories that you think should be entered, please respond to the Categories topic in the HANGAR CHAT forum. The AVSIM 2013 Demographic Survey is now online! The demographic survey attempts to take the "heart beat" of the flight simulation community this year. This year, the survey consists of 28 questions, all of which attempt to define our community, it's interests and the specifics of your hobby and the use of flight simulators. We will publish the results provided up to to the FANCON on Saturday, May 4th. The survey will run through December and we will provide updates or snapshots from time to time. Please take the survey today and help us explore your community. -
On Monday, March 24th, AVSIM will celebrate its 18th birthday. On Tuesday, the 25th, at noon EST, we will shut the system down for planned maintenance (happy birthday to us!!!). On Tuesday our plan is to power down the system and replace the first of three questionable hard drives in the Web / Forum server. If we power up and the system works, we will allow the RAID system to automatically incorporate the replacement disk as it would normally (or should). On Wednesday, we will repeat the process and as we will also do on Thursday. Each day at noon on those three days, the system will be powered down and a disk will be replaced. If that works, the downtime on each day should be less than an hour. On the final day, Thursday, we will also expand the array to include 2 more new disks to increase our capacity and allow us to go to a RAID configuration that will allow any two disks to fail and we will still maintain operation. If, on Tuesday, we power on and the system does not come back to life after we replace the first faulty disk, as it did a couple of weeks ago, we will immediately replace all three drives and add the two expansion drives, and then start reloading the system from our most recent (Monday, the 24th's) night back up. Our most recent experience with that back up process showed that the complete restore took some 26 - 28 hours to accomplish. We believe that the length of that restore was due to the faulty remaining disks (no one knows for sure at this point, but that is the best conjecture we have). We are looking for a much faster restore process once have all drives installed and assuming that we have to do a restore at all. We will keep you posted as we get nearer to the event and during each day. EDIT: we will be publishing a road map in the coming days as to future improvements, hardware acquisition, remedial activities and the like. Keep your eyes open for that, as I think it will tell you where AVSIM is going in the next five years or so.

Exciting news for those of us who enjoy the Screen Shot Forum! Today, Tom Allensworth (Owner and CEO of AVSIM) (The Big Kahuna) has announced changes to the Rules of The Screen Shot Forum. Important facts to consider: If you upload your images to AVSIM, there is no change to the current rules (except they will be available for 120 days instead of 90 days) If you host at a third party, you can now post as many as 20 images linked from the Screen Shot Forum. This should make quite a few of us pretty happy. The truth is not many people would want to wade through more than 20 images at a time. And ... if you want to post more than 20, start another thread. As a bonus, you can now append images in a thread after the first post! This should make for some great threads. These new rule changes have benefits for everyone. They come about after some great discussions on the forum. We have in the past three months sent out notifications to those users who have duplicate accounts. We have previously asked those users to explain their duplicate accounts and which one they would like to maintain. Sufficient time has passed and we are now removing, entirely, duplicates accounts where the user has not responded. If you find that one or more of your accounts have been deleted, you will now know why. We are putting people on notice; if you create a duplicate account, both accounts are liable to be banned. If you have a problem with your existing account DO NOT create a second. Contact us and we'll work through a solution for you. Duplicate accounts are NOT the answer.

With our recent system upgrades and fine tuning of our back end systems, we have made the decision to bring back our Online Chat System. The Chat system allows you to "chat" with your fellow AVSIM Community members in real time. This is a text based system and is not a "voice over IP" system such as TeamSpeak. Never the less, it gives you instant access to your fellow members at anytime of day or night, 24 / 7. You can access the Chat system by clicking on the COMMUNITY tab or by clicking here.

The only issue that we detected after the upgrade this afternoon was that the BLOCK FORUMS FROM SEARCH was not compatible with the new OS. That module has been removed, and will be replaced when the author updates it to be compatible with the latest revisions. If you detect any issues after the upgrade today, please post those issues in the TRACKING SYSTEM here.

For those of you who like to argue about whose is bigger (forums, categories, etc. that is), we have introduced a new statistics system that is sure to put all the arguments to bed (so to speak). Now, when someone wants to argue about the number of posts made, the number registrations, total membership, etc etc, they can factually discuss those without embarrassing themselves. AVSIM is pleased to bring on our new statistics system and hope you enjoy it too. You can access it by clicking on the FORUM Tab above and then on STATISTICS. Forgot to add... Disregard the file library download stats. Those are taken from the library that did not get implemented. The stats are meaningless today.
